What We Learned: Spring Game

A star is born at wideout? How did Braxton Miller perform? What about Kenny Guiton? Is Bri'onte Dunn going to play right away? What's up with Chris Carter and Michael Bennett?

    Dave Biddle

  • Good article as always DB. Any news on Meyer finding his "athlete" on offence? The next Percy Harvin? Is Thomas that guy?

  • Nice article Bidds.

Do you know if Joel Hale is okay? Have you heard anything on his front? I really hate to see a player get injured especially in the spring game. Thanks.

  • right - having someone this year calling offensive plays that has a proactive mindset will make 30% difference. Among these frshman Thomas was the most highly touted receiver he will make another 30% difference - thank goodness he's great - also another year for Devin Smith he should catch on. Last year's passing game and receivers(particularly Corey Brown) could make any fan of football throw-up.

He came back into the game and played after the injury.

Good days, bad days --- always a Buckeye. Time to begin the assault on the 2013 BCS National Championship

  • What I learned is that the Bucks with this new offense will not have 30% of their plays go for zero or negative yardage as was the case last year. Other than the "touch" sacks I don't remember many negative plays from either team. That will be be key to the offense not having to work from behind on down and distance.

  • We have some heavy hitters. I loved hearing the pads crack. I watched Decker for a bit... God he looks like a brick wall. He will be an All American by the time he is done. Hold onto your short hairs...this offense could hit stride by Mich State.

  • I wonder if the coaching staff was as surprised with Thomas as I was. It looked like a star was born. He caught a couple on Roby who is as good as we got. I was also pleased with the O line play for the most part. Kenny Guiton played almost as well as Miller. That was a huge relief to know we may have a backup we can count on.

  • This team has real potential. A talented qb who can pass and run with some solid backs and REAL OFFENSIVE COACHES will make a huge difference . My guess is that total offense is in the top20 in the nation every year with Urban.

The defense should be very strong. If the lb's develop this could be a great defense.

Next season will be a great springboard towards national championship contention in 2013.

Did Rod Smith improve hs stock today or were his carries more of an afterthought because Hall didn't play? I'm a big fan of Rod and want him to succeed!!

I have the game DVR'd, how was Doran Grant and the LB play today, Crowell and Roberts....included?

Rod Smith looked solid. Still doesn't seem to have good vision though. If he doesn't start finding the hole a little better he's not going to move up the depth chart.

It was definitely nice to see Chris Carter looking huge, but healthy and pretty nimble on his feet too. Plus he played a lot with no other NT on his team. He could turn out to be a contributor yet. Maybe NT is his spot.

Very happy with the way everybody played today. Shocked that Cardale didn't play. That basically says we're a 2 QB team for 2012. Good thing Guiton finally looked like he could lead the team down the field, repeatedly.

  • I've always been a Carter supporter. Same with Brown and Underwood. Anyone who'se ever played a down on on the line, ever experienced the brutal physics of football, knows you can't coach massive. Give a guy like that adequtae athletic ability and quickness, and they've all got much more than that, and you can't lose. Carter looked plenty quick to me. I'm sure there's room for improvement in some areas: strength, flexibilty, endurance, but they're all gonna be tough. Moving Carter to D was brilliant. Ever try to move a guy like that out of the lane, or stop him from going to where he wants to go? Good luck. Try it on a muddy field.

On a down note, I was hopeful, but I just can't get excited about becoming Purdue, even with a more athletic QB. It's like telling a
Ford guy he's gonna have to drive a Hyundai now. I'm just a Pro set guy all the way. If I were a blue chip RB, I wouldn't even consider us. We'll do well with WR's though. Hope we see a LOT of new wrinkles come game time.

    Miller's a star.

  • Good to hear the O-Line is comming along. A team like Ohio State which counted on the run so much in the past sould have never had the problems up fron they've had the past few years.

I took the license of removing the positive parts of this post to answer this part, as others may have this reaction. Remember Urban said this scrimmage/game was to test the passing game and would _not_ reflect the planned "balanced" attack for the fall. They showed some 'vanilla' power running, but don't use this to base your view of the running game. Its not a pro-set, but it will be spread-to-run, not spread-to-pass. They focused on things they needed to work on today - not running game, as they're happier with that than they are the passing game. RBs are going to do just fine in this offense.
