What ever happened to Jamel Turner.

  • I remember this kid was supposed to be a STUD. He was a Buckeye verbal and then got shot once or twice (I think). Anyone know what happened to this kid? Is he still playing ball? Prison?

  • Last I remember he was playing Juco I think in Kansas, I tried google but didnt find much

  • You should know him. His name is 50 cent

  • He was shot once as a semi-innocent bystandard in a car, the driver happened to sell drugs. Bad things happen in bad crowds. That one got him in the foot. Then he almost lost his life when he was shot, I believe in the neck, when he was with some girl and her boyfriend showed up. The girl was killed in that shooting. He made it back on the football field at that JUCO but I'm not sure what happened from there.

  • I like to know where he is from time to time.

He was an early committ to OSU and a kid that I wanted to see get out of his bad environment. Sadly, he didn't get to OSU.

  • Damn shame a kid can run into so many problems before the age of 17. If he could have gotten out of Youngstown imagine how different and promising his life could be today.

You want to be a smart azz then take your down votes like a man. I do it from time to time and get downvote bomb tarded... don't be a puss.

  • He was supposedly headed to Kansas to play for Butler Community College...found this online

Former recruit Jamel Turner back on track?

Seven months after gunshot wounds left him in critical condition, former Ohio State recruit Jamel Turner is in college and hoping to continue his football career.

Turner, a defensive end, has enrolled this semester at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., according to Dan Reardon, Turner’s coach at Youngstown Ursuline High School.

“We’ll see, he certainly has some obstacles to overcome,” Reardon said. “But he has so much potential, you hope everything comes together for him. It’s really been one of those screenplays, with the ups and downs and everything.”

Turner’s saga began in the winter of 2009, when he was kicked off Ursuline’s basketball team for disciplinary reasons and declared ineligible for sports the rest of the school year.

He enrolled at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy that fall and signed with Ohio State in February 2010. But he left Fork Union before finishing the school year, and trouble soon found him back in Youngstown.

Turner was involved in two shooting incidents, the second of which – in June – left a 17-year-old girl dead and Turner fighting for his life.

Reardon said he is encouraged that Turner has “has had a pretty good past four or five months. He has made good decisions and removed a lot of negative things from his life.”

At this point, Reardon said Turner simply is focused on getting back to playing football and going to school. Butler was the national runner-up in the junior college ranks last season, losing in the title game.

Any talk of where Turner might end up _ including Ohio State _ is premature.

However, Reardon said, “In a year or two, if he’s done everything he’s supposed to do, I wouldn’t rule it out.”

  • I am from Youngstown area and friends with Jamel on facebook. Just so everyone knows he has a brother Jamal that runs with a rough crowd. Again they don't live in the best part of ytown either. Also the girl who lost her life when jamel was shot was the shooters EX girlfriend. They were no longer dating and jamel was friends with her and not dating her. It happened to be wrong place wrong time. Jamel had a few issues at Ursuline high school but a lot of it came from being so competitive and him losing his temper during basketball. From everyone I know close to the situation it's always been said he has lead a tough life with not a lot of positive influences in his life either. He wanted to be a great athlete and worked hard but had a twin brother pulling him in another direction too. From what I hear now Jamel has not gotten his freak athleticism back from after he was shot and almost died. I believe he lost something along the lines of 30 lbs of muscle from being in the hospital and his injuries. I am definitely pulling for him to make something out of his life cause if u his saw film on him in high school he was a smaller version of adolphous Washington. He had 25 sacks as a junior. He was all over the field.

  • Such a tragedy, but maybe the terrible things that happened to him will make him stronger than he would have been if they did not happen; set him on a new course in life. I sincerely hope he gets his strenght back and makes something of his life, whether it includes playing football or not.

thanks for the update. feel free to post update threads whenever you hear any news. True buckeye fans are rooting for him to make a triumphant return whether its on or off the field and for any team.

  • Id like to make a thread about other former Buckeye commits or targets that never made it like Shawntell Rowell, Dawan Whitner, Keith Wells etc. It would probably be pointless but I always wonder about stuff like that

  • He's going to play for Akron.

Good luck to him. They said he would never play football plus the kid is lucky to be alive. Anything he accomplishes from this day forward is gravy. Akron is a good school. Lets hope he takes advantage of it and gets a good degree.
