What is worse South Carolina or OSU

  • A lot of SC fans are saying what their school did wasn't wrong and not that bad. IMO I think what SC did is was way worse. The NCAA charged them with receiving a total of 55k of impermissible benefits. 47k of it was from the Whitney Hotel and another 8k was from the SAM foundation. I see them getting it bad....let me know

  • By SEC standards this is nothing. The ncaa and their masters at espin will dilute it via a new OSU rehash.

  • I think it depends on how much you believe the school did/did not know/participate in the hotel thing.

what screwed us is having a coach lie multiple times. The NCAA is forced to make an example of you in that situation.

Their whole compliance office knew about this and signed the exact same document Tressel did....this also was through multiple sports as well. This has been going on since 09 probably longer as well.

  • Sorry Ive only been following ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, etc so I have no idea what S. Carolina did. I can tell you intimate details about what happened at OSU, however.

Basically they were giving kids a 2 bdrm suite at this hotel for 15 dollars a night and some other kids received $ from a foundation called the SAM foundation.

NCAA sent a letter to SC saying they received 55k in impermissible benefits.

  • Knowing and proving is two different things. Until there is proof or admission that they knew i think what JT did is worse. JT didn't do the right thing and has admitted as such. It's that simple for me. Is he taking the fall (maybe) is something we may never know. What i don't get is that our kids sold stuff for approx 500 to 2000 and miss six gmaes yet the Miami kids took more money and got less of a punishment. NCAA what a joke!

Raven....SC already admitted everything this has been going on for almost a yr now and SC just met with the NCAA and the NCAA will have a decision in 2-3 months...Miami still hasn't gotten their final decision from the NCAA either.

  • The bulk of improper benefits come from 12 athletes staying at the Whitney Hotel at $450 each for a two-bedroom suite.

The NCAA found the hotel a few miles off campus charged a rate of $14.95 per athlete for two-bedroom suites. The NCAA said the rate should've been more than $57 per night for each athlete. One football player who spent more than a year at the hotel, the NCAA said, received an extra benefit worth $19,280.

The NCAA said the school received $47,000 worth of improper benefits from the rate reduction.

South Carolina's former compliance director Jennifer Stiles had said the hotel rate was comparable to other available off-campus housing. The NCAA called her assessment "flawed" in correspondence from 2010 and said the school should've compared with rates given others who stayed at the Whitney long term.

"Had this good faith error in judgment not occurred, the university believes the violations in allegation one would have been minimized," South Carolina said in its NCAA response.

The NCAA also alleged that South Carolina received $8,000 in improper benefits from the Student Athlete Mentoring Foundation.

SAMF president Steve Gordon and treasurer Kevin Lahn were found to have paid for several unofficial visits by Gamecocks freshman receiver Damiere Byrd. Both Gordon and Lahn are South Carolina graduates.

Byrd was suspended for South Carolina's first four games and made to pay back $2,700.

Lahn also paid for a $3,350 dinner cruise on nearby Lake Murray for several prospects that was also attended by track coach Curtis Frye and 16 members of his program.

The school said it will reduce football scholarships by one in 2012-13, by three in 2013-14 and by two in 2014-15. The football team will reduce its official visits from 56 to 30 in 2012-2013.

South Carolina said it would pay a fine of $18,500 for four athletes who played in 2009 and 2010 while ineligible because of these violations.

The university has disassociated itself from three boosters, SAMF officials Gordon and Lahn, and Whitney general manager Jamie Blevins.

  • SC sounds alot worse. Doesn't SC compliance have to monitor players living arrangements! This is a total joke, however I don't think ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, SI,...will send anyone to camp out in Columbia for a year to investigate. The real USC got hammered because the NCAA said they should have known what was going on. Why isn't this the same?

I 100% agree were talking 55k compared to 13k.....also were talking about Tressel being the only one who knew about OSU and their ENTIRE compliance program knew about it for yrs.

  • I feel like people are saying SC didn't knowingly hide or lie. They are acting like they have reported through compliance and it is like they thought this was ok or something.

I read the thread you started on the Blue Board. SC fans are saying the number is overstated due to NCAA policy. We can say the same about OSU as well.

since 2009 the Whitney Hotel made special arrangements with nine of the student-athletes to postpone paying rent, which constitutes an impermissible loan, according to NCAA statute. Proof they were lying...the compliance office has to sign off the same docs as Tress did.

  • I understand what you are saying. I think you are just being too black or white with the whole thing.

We've seen what the NCAA has done with this whole thing.

Like someone already said, JT killed us by covering it up. You take that away and what we did was nothing. I guess it all depends on how the NCAA views how SC "covered it up."

  • No I understand that.....those idiots are in such denial its sickening.

This is why the SC case is not as bad as it seems if you don't look more closely at it than just the headline. The compliance officer just screwed up. She figured athletes can get lodging around town for $15 a night so this was no biggie. She should have realized that you can't compare the rates they were given to what they could get elsewhere, but rather to what any non-athlete would pay.

Either way, it is far from USC trying to cheat the system. This gave them no competitive advantage.

In my mind, not a big deal. But I also thought tOSU's wasn't as big a deal as the media made it out to be. Biggest difference is JT tried to cover up the issue and as we all know the coverup is what gets you taken down.

Yea but the owner of the hotel is a Booster for the university...also, this isn't the only thing they are going in front of the NCAA for either. They are also under investigation for improper benefits from boosters of South Carolina from the SAM fund.

  • You guys are surprised by this?... seriously.... ESPN hates OSU and we all know this... if ESPN wasnt involved in the investigation, OSU would of gotten minimal penalties. But since they blew it up the NCAA didnt have a choice...

BTW I love Tress, but he screwed up.

Exactly..the Whitney is pretty nice, and the owner is a big time booster, they definitely knew what they were doing.
IIRC, multiple players were also "behind" on thier vastly reduced rates. I also live in SC, and all I hear is how this and the SAM issue were blown out of proportion or were a misunderstanding. The SAM foundation also provided funds to Shariff Floyd, I'm pretty sure.

I live in South Carolina and that's not what they're saying. Most are keeping their mouths shut and hoping for the best. But I think USC is going to get hammered. When it first came out everybody couldn't believe how stupid these kids were by living at this low-rent hotel. And how did compliance not know about what was going on? Everybody is still bickering about Garcia and whether he was a good QB or great QB. Me, I don't give a damn. Go Bucks!

  • I also think they are going to get hammered. You have to remember that they have the "failure to monitor" allegation and they have already been tagged with the "lack of institutional control" from the Lou Holtz area. That means they can be treated as repeat offenders this time. So I see bad things in store for them down the road SEC or not.
