  • I think this is actually a good hire for the Browns. Chud has had success at all of his stops in coaching. He is not simply a guy that had success with Cam Newton running his offense. That is an incorrect statement to make. I'm sure those that don't know much about Chud's coaching history would just automatically proclaim it was a bad or underwhelming hire. He can coach offense. I have no doubt about that. From the sounds of it he will also bring Norv Turner to be the OC. Another guy that can coach offense (a better OC than HC). Chuds ultimate success will depend on who is making the personnel decisions. If the Browns continue to add talent to the roster they will continue to improve and win more. Here is more about Chud from Terry Pluto of the Plain Dealer.

    1. Here is a reason to be upbeat about new Browns coach Rob Chudzinski. He received a lot of credit for building an offense to suit mobile quarterback Cam Newton, who became the 2011 Rookie of the Year for Carolina. But when Newton had a poor start in 2012, he took a lot of heat -- as did Chudzinski's offense. But the Panthers offensive coordinator made some real adjustments, and it worked.

    2. In the first eight games of 2012, Newton had six touchdown passes to eight interceptions, a 77.7 rating. The Panthers were 2-6. In the last eight games, Newton had 13 touchdown passes, four interceptions. The Panthers were 5-3 as Newton had a 94.2 rating. So Chudzinski regrouped his young quarterback, and helped the Panthers win their final four games of the season.

    3. Five times, the Panthers scored at least 30 points last season. In 2011, Chudzinski's offense ranked No. 7. In 2012, it was No. 12.

    4. By comparison, the Browns offense scored 30 points twice...and the offense ranked 25th.

    5. In 2007, the Browns offense ranked 8th with Chudzinski calling the plays. His quarterback was Derek Anderson, who was Newton's backup quarterback with the Panthers in 2012. That 2007 season earned Chudziski a contract extension through 2011. So yes, the Browns were paying him when he was fired after the 2008 season as part of Romeo Crennel's coaching staff.

    6. After the 2011 season, Chudzinski interviewed for head coaching jobs with Jacksonville, Tampa and St. Louis. He was retained by new head coach Ron Rivera in Carolina. So his coaching star has been rising inside the NFL.

    7. Chudzinski loves to call plays and is expected to do that here. Let's hope the reports of hiring veteran Norv Turner as offensive coordinator are true. Turner has been a head coach, has a strong relationship with Chudzinski and that should help the rookie coach. The Browns don't need a repeat of 2011 when Pat Shurmur was hired, but they didn't give the rookie coach an offensive coordinator.

    8. Chudzinski does come to town with more experience running offenses than Shurmur, who was offensive coordinator in St. Louis for only two years before joining the Browns. Chudzinski has two years as the Browns offensive coordinator, and two years as offensive coordinator in Carolina. He also was assistant head coach in San Diego for two years.

    9. Chudzinski has been a tight ends coach with several teams. Wonder if they will play a bigger part in the Browns offense?

    10. Yes, it seems with Chudzinski's love the the vertical passing game that Brandon Weeden would be a fit with his offense.

    11. Hope those early reports of switching to a 3-4 defense are not true. Just don't want to think about changing all that again, as they have played the 4-3 for the last two years.

    12. With Carolina, Chudzinski had a nice 490/462 pass/run ratio of playing calling. You like to stay around 50/50.

    13. Carolina won it's last four games of the season, beating Atlanta (30-20), San Diego (31-7), Oakland (17-6) and New Orleans (44-38) as Chudzinski had his offense working. The improvement at the end of the season is very encouraging

  • I have a feeling Lombardi will be hired in some personnel position with the Browns. I just hope he or Banner are not the ones making the draft picks/free agent decisions. The Browns have interviewed a lot of GM candidates which I like. They are being thorough which is a good thing, like they were in the HC search.

I am not concerned with Chud not being a HC before. He is bringing Turner with him. He has had plenty of HC experience. Guys like Tomlin, Harbaugh (Baltimore version), Cowher, Reid, etc were all first time HCs when they have come in and had success. That doesn't bother me.

Here's to hoping Haslam, Banner, and Chud fill out the front office and coaching staff with talented people. Would love to see Chud bring home the Lombardi trophy!!

  • The Browns needed a big name hire. Jimmy Haslem is 0-1. Should have kept Heckert also. 0-2.

  • I'm kind of torn right now. It felt we could of gotten better or worse. To me it' feels like any other season. Will have to wait and see. Sucks. Go Browns

    guyano

  • As a Bengal fan, I fully support this move.

    biggrin

But seriously, the only problem here is that Haslam comes in talking big and gets the fans thinking he's going to make some big splash of a hire. Then he hires Chud instead. It might end up being a good hire, but I can see why a lot of Browns fans are upset. Haslam came in promising the moon and stars. Pretty sure the saying does not go "Speak loudly and carry a big stick."

    Dave Biddle

  • I understand if Browns fans are upset about not a big name with the expectations Haslam and Banner may have given. But, in the end, Saban wasn't leaving Bama. Kelly decided to stay with Oregon. Cowher is interested in coaching again, but not this year and I don't think in Cleveland. It is silly for fans to want a big name just to have a big name. Mike Tomlin, Andy Reid, John Harbaugh, Bill Cowher, etc weren't big names when they were hired. I want a coach who can win and be successful. I think Chud can be that guy. The key again will be the personel decisions that are made. Those writing this off as a bad hire before he has coached a game are jumping the gun. Lets see what this coach and this new regime can do before starting the doom and gloom stuff.

  • No 3-4 D and I will live. Heard someone say they might switch. That would suck. With the spread coming to the nfl more I think the 3-4 is the wrong way to go.

    mjw1200

  • Will be interesting to see what they do with the D. Chud at the presser today when asked that question said something to the effect of " haven't made a decision yet, but will probably be an attacking hybrid of the two". This is sort of what OSU does.
