Why should Bama get in over Oregon?

  • Both have a loss at home to a similar ranked team. Oregon's opponent though needed OT to win, Bama's opponent won in Regulation.

Bama's opponenent won by more as well.

SO why should Bama get in over Oregon?

It seems to me like Oregon should still be ranked ahead of Bama.

    Am I missing something here?

  • You are missing that Bama is in the SEC. End of story. If Im not mistaken Bama was still ranked #1 in some of the computer polls even after they lost.

Basically what has happened is people see SEC teams as so much better than the rest of the league that regardless of whether or not they lose they are still better so they rank them higher. In other words it's not settled on the field (not yet) it is settled preseason (with these silly preseason polls) and that is how it stays through out the season.

The only hope Oregon has now is winning next week while Stanford loses to UCLA. That will get them back into the PAC-12 Championship

The good news is the Bucks are now only 1 of 2 undefeated teams. If Notre Dame loses to USC next week week....hmmm

actually you are missing something waaayyy more obvious. Oregon will not even win their half of their division. Will not play in the Pac12 title game..if Bama makes it in..they will be the SEC champions.

  • Don't know what the rankings will be today, but it is safe to say the two teams will be within a spot or two of each other. However Bama has a huge advantage going forward because they are likely to play for their conference championship, and Oregon will not. So where the two teams end up relative to the other is really irrevelant. Oregon very likely killed their opportunity to play for the national championship last night.

Why should winning your conference have any bearing on whether or not you get in? I'm being half sarcastic when asking this (as I was when asking the original question) but winning the Conference didn't seem to matter last year.

Yeah I know Bama will get in because they play in the oh so tough SEC, but if the only thing that was seperating these two teams before last night was Bama's loss to A&M, you have to compare the two losses.

Bama's loss was slightly worse than Oregon's, so in reality Oregon should stay ranked ahead of Bama imo.

I know they won't and think SEC bias is bullshit I still wanted to point out why Oregon should be in over Bama.

  • The good news is Clemson plays South Carolina (who doesn't deserve to be in the top10) so they could knock scar out and Fla State plays Florida (who also doesn't deserve to be in the top 10) so we could see some changes. I don't see another repeat of last year but I think it's inevitable that an SEC team gets in. unfortunately. Lets just hope ND loses so we can be the only undefeated and so ND is not the team the SEC team faces. I have little faith in ND personally.

Exactly, a team that doesn't win their division will never be in the NCG....err excluding SEC teams of course.

you are going back and forth between years and got yourself confused.

Last year..Bama's only loss was the #1 ranked team.

This year..Bam's loss was to and Atm team that will be ranked ahead of Stanford..so again..Bama's loss each year was a better loss than Oregon.

If Bama gets in...and the ONLY way they get in this year..is going 12-1 and winning the SEC...which is in any realistic student of cfb..better than a 1 loss Pac12 team that didn't even win their half of a division.

Hate on the SEC all you want...but don't let it be the reason for illogical reasoning.

Now...if UCLA beats Stanfor next week and Oregon beats UCLA...Oregon would reposition themselves for a chance..though that would mean that their loss is to a 3 loss team that ND beat (if ND got beat by USC and ended up 11-1).

In the end...even if ND loses next week...a 1 loss SEC champ, a 1 loss ND, and a 1 loss Fla (if they get by FSU) are all more deserving of playing for the NC than a 1 loss Oregon (if Stanford wins next week).

I would give Oregon the nod over a 1 loss K-St or a 1 loss FSU based purely on who those two loss to unranked teams.

  • After last night vs. Stanford, and next week Oregon going on the road to Corevalis against 9-2 Oregon State, in a tough tough road environmet, where a win gets OSU maybe a BCS bowl at 10-2, not sure Oregon wins at Oregon State.
Oregon State gave Stanford as good of a game as Oregon did last night last week at Stanford, and lost their lead in the second half and lost a close game.
Oregon State won at UCLA and beat Wisconsin, and lost a close game at Washington.
In fact, I think Oregon State is tougher and will beat Oregon at home and go 10-2.

No I'm not confused. My points were last year Bama got in without winning their conference. People here are saying Oregon shouldn't get in unless they win the Pac 12 but Alabama didn't win their conference last year so winning the conference shouldn't have any bearing on who gets in (As Bama getting in last year proved).

This year, both Alabama and Oregon lost at home to a team that was ranked between 10-15. Bama lost by a little more, and the team that beat them didn't need an extra quarter to do it.

Those were my points. Alabama hasn't accomplished any more than Oregon this year. So there is no reason (other than unfair SEC bias) that Bama should get in over Oregon.

I think Bama gets the benefit of the doubt cause their conference has won six NC's(2 of last 3 belonging to them) in a row and Oregon has come up small on an almost annual basis in big games under Kelly(see Auburn, LSU, OSU and now Stanford).

You may call that "SEC bias" but if I'm splitting hairs between the two, to me Bama's resume looks more impressive than Oregon's from a historical perspective.

  • Well that'd be a real shame if a team gets rewarded for things that have absolutely nothing to do with this season. Past seasons should have zero bearing on this season. SEC bias at it's finest.

  • Don't worry Florida could lose to Florida St., South Carolina could lose to Clemson, and Georgia could lose to Georgia Tech and the SEC will still be considered the Greatest football conference of all time. Total BS. A four team playoff won't help this out, we need a 8 or 16 team tournament then the Real teams will stand out. and if it happens to be all SEC teams then SO BE IT !

I would have a tough time taking a one loss PAC12 team over a one loss SEC team to play in a meaningful game under almost any circumstances.

We have this debate almost every year as far as why do SEC teams get favoritism over teams from every other conference and almost every year they end up curb stomping whomever they play in the title game.
