Why the ND hate?

  • I was born and raised in South Bend Indiana and have followed Notre Dame football my entire life. Its in my blood, like Buckeye football is for my son and daughter. I have lived in Columbus for 10 years now and follow/cheer for the Buckeyes as well. I was as excited as anyone to see Urban get the gig and I'm not even pissed that Decker flipped to the Buckeyes. I belong to Mike Franks ND site as well and follow Irish recruiting very closely, ND is fine at OT. For the life of me I cannot understand why ND is always bashed here. Go to a game in South Bend with a OSU jersey on and see how well you are treated. Visiting fans are treated extremely well and the ushers will go out of there way to help you. You can tailgate in peace and enjoy your time without worrying about beer bottles and bags of urine getting tossed at you. ND has not been a real threat for a national title since they got hosed by FSU in 93. ND fans realize this. ND fans don't think ND football is the be all end all. We understand where we are and hope for better days. I think ND's fan base is too nice, almost to the point of being soft at times. So I have to ask, why do you hate ND so much?

for me personally the only problem i have with nd is kelly acting like a buffoon on the sidelines. cant stand the way he treats his players. other than that im fine with nd

  • For me, it's mostly because I hate Kelly. I think he's an asshole and he killed a kid. Also, I feel like ND acts like they're always owed something. I wouldn't say I HATE the program though.

  • A better question is "Why the Notre Dame love, by the media?" The team has been irrelevant for most of the lives of the kids playing football now. The answer to this more pertinent question I'm sure has something to do with selling TV commercials.

  • I can't speak for others only for me personally.. I consider them a rival due to the fact that traditionally they play big ten teams even tho they have only occasionally played OSU. However in my mind they are still a regional rival. They have continually shunned and turned their nose up at Joinimg the Big ten. Now I personally don't want them, I would not mind seeing the Big ten expand but I would like to see them continue to enjoy their football independence right on into oblivion. They are a rusty old shell of college football glory and that's fine with me.

  • I disagree RustyBuck, ESPN bashes ND every single chance they get. Its always a huge topic over on Irish Sports Daily. Just this morning Dan Patrick was bagging on ND while they were talking about the Gunner Kiel flip. Bill King did it as well. The Herd bashes the ND football program on a daily basis. ND is not a media darling. That simply is not true.

  • Because they suck

  • I find the majority of their fan base delusional. More delusional than most as we are all to some extent. Being in the military I interact with fans from all over the place and I am always surprised by penn state an ND fans.

  • SAM1, the majority of ND fans realize the need to join a conference and want ND to join the Big 10 or ACC. I would love to see them in the Big 10.

Actually, I don't hate Notre Dame anymore. I used to though. I didn't like the way Notre Dame was, and to a certain degree still is, catered to. They want all the advantages of being independent without any of the draw backs. But with every passing year ND is becomming less relevant and has become it's own worst enemy. The arrogance that surrounds it is becomming an anchor that keeps it from moving forward with other top programs.

  • 1. Join a conference. Notre Dame is no longer elite, it's arguable they are regressing, and to act like they are too good to join one of the top tier conferences (whose teams regularly beat them) just rubs me the wrong way.

    2. Brian Kelly.

    3. Michael Floyd. When you try to portray the image that ND does, to allow this guy to keep getting DUI's and still be allowed to play reeks of hypocrisy.

    4. I just don't like them, But who cares? I don't like Bama, Florida, ScUM, USC, Oregon, Prissconsin, and others. Why does it matter.

    5. I do like Lou Holtz. Funny dude

  • 6. Rudy is a scammer.

  • I tailgated with ND fans back in '95 when they came to Columbus.

Without question the most arrogant people I have ever been around in my life. I was literally laughing to myself listening to them speak.

It was great to see Eddie stomp all over that pathetic excuse for a football program.

  • ND fans do not think the football program is elite. ND fans completely get this. I could see the delusional thing during the Charlie Cheeseburger years, but not now.

  • I think it's because they are a polarizing team in college football and they don't produce like a polarizing team should. They get the coverage the Yankees and Lakers receive in their respective sports, however, ND does not win. I think people are sick of seeing the hype train every year with no final product to match. I don't hate ND by any means. I think it's annoying the amount of attention they get, and I think Kelly is insane. I also think people view them as arrogant because they refuse to join a conference.

  • I think the big issue is that they are not in a conference and turn down the big ten left and right. We know that Notre Dame is staying independant because of they money they recieve from it. They have not earned the right to be on national tv every Saturday, and yet they are on NBC most Saturdays and ABC the other. Notre Dame is the only team that has a clause that if they win 10 games they are automatically in a BCS game. Also, every year is Notre Dame's year (according to the media) and yet they suck. Notre Dame is still considered a national powerhouse and has not earned that title. Hell they can't even win a bowl game (what is their record losing streak in bowl loses?).

What attention do they get? From where? Everyone is on TV now. What hype train? They dont get the lofty preseason rankings anymore.

current losing streak is one. The won their last two and blew out Miami last year.

  • Interesting you bring this up as I have recently been paying attention to the Louisville football program as my girlfriend is from there. I frequent their message boards and noticed that the B10 got much more criticism than any other conference. I asked them the same thing that you are asking us and so far and seeing somewhat similar answers. I think the bottom line is that people dislike what they perceive as not deserving. For example, many UL fans (and many others) see the B10 as the old money conference who are relying on their past successes for current recognition. They point out Delaney's opposition to a playoff. I think many (and partly me) see ND in a similar light.

Most cite Kelly on here but I think it existed before he ever got there. I don't really dislike Notre Dame (lots of former Coffman alums have went there) but what bothers me is that they still get preferential treatment by the BCS by just having to go 9-3. Also, why is that when we hear about the BCS meetings we hear that all 11 conference commissioners are meeting and Jack Swarbrick? Why not Army and Navy? Why ND?

    LvilleBuckeye

  • They're completely irrelevant. Please don't talk to me about ND until they win a BCS bowl game.

THEY HAVE NEVER WON A BCS BOWL GAME
