Why the ND hate?

  • dmolesky said...

They're completely irrelevant. Please don't talk to me about ND until they win a BCS bowl game.

THEY HAVE NEVER WON A BCS BOWL GAME

dmolesky, this is completely my point. Yet as irrelevant as you say they are I cannot come on this site without seeing something about ND in a thread or topic.

  • Their fans are delusional. They think they are in national contention every year. This is my personal experience with every ND fan I know.

If I had to sum it up. Basically they mean nothing in the national stage yet their fans think they are in contention for the Nat'l Championship every year.

I disagree RustyBuck, ESPN bashes ND every single chance they get. Its always a huge topic over on Irish Sports Daily. Just this morning Dan Patrick was bagging on ND while they were talking about the Gunner Kiel flip. Bill King did it as well. The Herd bashes the ND football program on a daily basis. ND is not a media darling. That simply is not true.

I agree that some on E-Spin don't like ND, because all of the profit goes to ABC's competitor, NBC (the Notre Dame Broadcasting Company). Holtz naturally loves them as does Mark May. I wouldn't put much stock in what Cowerd says, because he's only hired to be one of those "shock jocks." Those type of radio personalities get ratings by /trying/ to offend as many people as possible. That's why he hates on teams like ND and OSU--they have large fan bases, which equals ratings for him. He's sort of like the Howard Stern or Bill O'Reilly of sports.

Regardless, if you really don't believe there is a pro-ND bias in the media, can you please explain to me why Notre Dame is ranked in the AP top 25 every year, when they've done NOTHING to earn the ranking the year prior?

  • They are a regional rival in recruiting. Everywhere I look, people are doing their conference grab-assing or cheering for teams with close geographic proximity. F that. If Michigan University and Notre Dame were never relevant again, Ohio State would completely own the Midwest in terms of recruiting. Getting the best players wins you more games. Winning more games means being more attractive to the best athletes. As it is, Ohio State has to compete with Notre Dame for the top athletes in the Midwest. In 2008, we had a monster haul of 5 star athletes. Devier Posey, Mike Adams, Mike Brewster, JB Shugarts, and Terelle Pryor had Buckeye fans excited. Imagine what it would've been like in that class and surrounding classes if Ohio State grabbed 5 star players like Kyle Rudolph, Michael Floyd, Chris Watt, Eric Shrive, Jordan Hicks, Trey Depriest, William Gholston, Donovan Warren, and Seantrel Henderson, all from the Midwest. The team would never lose. However, we don't get all of those players because of other teams recruiting them. That's why I don't like Notre Dame, Alabama, Texas, scUM (although there's many other reasons for that too), USC, or Penn State. Personally, I don't care how good the rest of the B1G or Notre Dame are. Them doing well is a threat to our recruiting. I want the best athletes in the Midwest to go to OSU so we can win national championships.

dmolesky, This is not the case, I have followed the program my entire life. I do not know a single ND fan that thought they would win the Nat'l championship this year, next year, the year before that, etc.

  • Has anyone watch a ND game on tv? For starters, playing their games at 2:30 because everyone else plays at 3:30 just pisses me off and screams "we are better then you are." Secondly, while watching said ND game on tv have you ever seen the score of another game NOT ND's while their game is going on? Yeah, me either.

Then the tip of the iceburg for me is their refusal to join a conference. And the conference they are thinking about joining is the ACC of all places. ND makes my blood boil.

ND Football....."Even though we haven't been relevant since 1989 we are STILL better then you are." MY ASS!

  • I don't see it either. ND has not been an elite football program since the early 1990's. I think maybe it is because they get the elite treatment without really earning it. Living off the past. Also ND recruits Ohio so they are a recruiting rival. By the way I am a hillbilly Catholic. Just saying.

  • Arrogance. Notre Dame fans/alumni are the absolute most arrogant people. They not only think they have the greatest program in the world, but they continue to act like they do no wrong. Plus, Notre dame fans are more in love with being an Independant in football than being a fan of the actual football team.

I 100% disagree with this and it seems to be the canned answer. This may have been the case in 1990 but its not today. ND's fans are in tune with reality. We have seen the lack of big wins for the last 20 years.

Yeah i don't think the media in general is a problem for ND love, i think most on here just see how a recruitnik like luginbill makes sweet love to them at every oppurtunity and kind of generalizes it to "all" media. As many have stated i really hate kelly, hes a jackwagon but ND is my 2nd favorite team. When i was a youth i loved watching tony rice and the rocket etc etc until my dad beat it out of me lol:P I hold no ill will whatsoever towards your fine institution but i really enjoy seeing other here make up sweet excuses that border on typical uneducated responses. One that i haven't read so far that probably urks a lot of fans is the perception that a lot of Ohio kids in catholic schools down towards cincy always tend towards ND. I think Urbs is going to stop that trend but im sure that bothers a lot of bucks fans. I hope your experiance on this board was pleasant, don't be a stranger:)

It's not a matter of winning games, it's the elistest mentality of the ND fans. The "we do things the right way and no one else does" mentality. The "well if we didn't have academic restrictions because we're so elite academically we would be the best" mentality. It's when I get emails from ND alums abuot ND having one of the highest graduation rates of any CFB program. It's every time I have to hear someone say "It's just a special place" and then I go there and I see no difference between it and any other major football factory for a gameday experience. The "We wont join the Big Ten because we're mroe of a national school and don't want to be confined to the Midwest, so we'll probably go to the ACC" conversation. Why shouldn't us midwesterners hate those a-holes for statements like that?

Holding yourself to a higher standard than other univeristies is fine, but the track record shows that they do not.

Michael Floyd gets his third arrest related to drinking and doesn't miss a second of playing time.
The coach's stupidity killed a student manager yet the only thing that came from it was a small fine.
MULTIPLE reports of football players raping girls that go to St. Mary's yet the school has essentially covered it up.

Don't blame ND for that. NBC knows they can get some extra viewership by starting the games earlier then the 3:30 slot. Im ok with them not wanting to join a conference if they make more money that way but i hear you on this point. If they join the fargin ACC just to shove a burr up the the big 10s anus i'll be pretty furious.

  • There is an arrogance that comes with their history that rubs people the wrong way. But, that is their envy and their problem, not ND's. Some don't like that they continually turn down B1G membership, but as long as NBC keeps doling out the cash, that is the B1G's problem, not ND's. I simply want to see them fail because as a midwestern power Ohio would/is a primary recruiting ground, and recruiting is what wins championships in the long run. In fact, Ohio so populates the B1G I don't really like to see any B1G do well. Screw that inbread SEC crap.

  • During late 80s or early 90s, ND wrestling's biggest financial supporter passed away. Notre Dame manipulated his widow into signing away financial support entirely into football program. ND then cut the wrestling program.

    I've hated them since then.

Also, ND refusal to join any conference certainly did not help any.
