Winning despite Thomas

  • I'm a big DT supporter but he's not blocking out Payne, getting back on defense, finishing plays and especially just not showing toughness. I hope some team mates hold him accountable.

  • How about putting guys in their actually positions. Matta can recruit and coach but I hate his philosophy of a team. DT is a 3, not a 4. Payne is 6-9, 6-10 with way longer arms. Its time to actually recruit a true team. Play a PG, SG, SF, PF and C.

  • If Thomas is shooting well, and the rest of the team plays like this...we can go places in the NCAA tournament, I think. Just need to maintain the focus they've had.

We have a NC defense when they play hard. We can bat anyone in the country. Two teams I want to avoid in our bracket are Indiana and Kansas...We do not fare well against elite bigmen. Any team that has elite bigmen need to be on the other side of the bracket or get knocked out of the tourney.

DT would be even worse defending the 3. He would get absolutely destroyed.

  • Game's about match-ups. Izzo did a great job defending him -Payne was a killer for him. If you didn't know the result and I told you DT shot 4 for 16, how many would think we had won ? Great team play in the second half and a great win. DT did lead the team in rebounds.

No clue, but thats on Matta. DT is not a 4 and Sully is not a 5 period. We will not win anything till we get back to actually recruiting for real spots on a team. Scott / Craft on the floor are not great together. They are both points and neither can shot for shit. DT will get and has been abused by longer athletic 4's. Rav tries and works hard but if that is our 5 we have no 5.

Wow, I thought we won....I must've turned it off too soon and we ended up losing....

    FYI...If DT can't guard a slower 4 spot how do you think he'll guard a faster 3??

Payne didn't kill us offensively, he hurt us on hustle plays and on the boards. The dude is 6'10" with 7'4" wingspan, he's going to out rebound any 4 in the country. Now, the out hustling is more of a concern, DT can try to match the hustle, not the height....

  • Hey enjoy the win.....no one is perfect....they beat us by 3 on their floor in January a game we hould have won...we beat them by 8 on our floor...I'll take it! I think we need to lay off Thomas..he is leading the B10 in scoring...everybody in the league is targeting him to stop him.....I'll take the 14 points....this team held MSU to 59 points, then 60 points..i;ll take the win...

  • DT has been our most consistent player. Craft finally shows up to play a complete game and people are falling over themselves with compliments. Lets not lose sight because of one game.

DT is far from the reason we've lost a lot of these big close games. Nice to have the other guys picking up the slack....you know, like a team should.

So you want Craft/Scott at the 1, Lenzelle/Thompson at the 2, DT at the 3, Ravenel at the 4, and Amir at the 5? Who do you want coming off the bench at the 4 and 5? Do you want Q only coming in to spell DT for 5 minutes a game?

Your goal is to get your 5 best on the court. If that means playing small or playing big, so be it. DT is a matchup nightmare because he can overpower smaller guys and he shoots well enough to make it tough for big guys to guard him and chase him around picks. Unfortunately, tough matchups go both ways. He struggles defending quick guys, and he's undersized against post players.

Again, I am not questioning what might be best for this team, but the team make up is directly and squarely on Matta. He recruits the kids and he builds the team. Not having any size other then Williams and Rav is his problem. He has way to many athletic guard types and not enough true Front court kids. They don't all have to be 7' tall but getting 4 guys who are all atleast 6'9 or so shouldn't be that tough for as a lot of people say one of the top best coaches in the game. Hell, PAYNE is an OHIO KID from Dayton.

Even when Matta has two athletic bigs, he rarely plays them together. He prefers smaller, quicker teams that can guard on the perimeter and one shot blocker on the back end. He has produced the best results at OSU since the early 60's playing this style, so don't expect him to change his approach.

    Don't like it, don't watch.

And by the way Matta recruited PAYNE hard; PAYNE choose MSU for a variety of reasons. One of which may have been that he wanted out from under Sullinger's shadow (they played together on All Ohio Red). Which would you rather have had? PAYNE or Sullinger?

you are contradicting yourself.....you ARE questioning what's best for the team. Enjoy the win and teh way this team played.

Payne is a match-up problem for ANY team.....we all know DT is not the best defender...we all know that we need a capable big. AMir was offered by MANY MANY other schools and he obviously is not panning out.

As others have said...Matta recruited Payne hard and he chose MSU, not OSU.

Your criticism of Matta is ridiculous......we all do not have to like how he coaches some times or choices he makes but look at his track record and what he has accomplished. Next year might be a little dicey but right now we have a top ranked recruiting class for 2014.

I have not contradicted anything. Try some reading comprehension again. Matta might be doing whats best for this squad. But this squad is lacking shooters and an inside presence. Who takes the blame for that. MATTA DOES. He built the team. It doesn't matter if he tried to recruit a kid and failed to do so. He didn't get a back up plan or have another kid that could also take that spot.

Matta also doesn't have any National Titles to sit behind either that gives him make up time like coach Cal does with his current Kentucky team.

In your mind you can't complain about a team because the coach missed out on a recruit? Bull shit. Matta either gets the kids or he don't. IF he doesn't he better have a back up plan.

Again, Matta can coach and recruit, I am not discounting that. I am saying the lack bigs on the team and outside scoring threats are his responsibility and are directly on his shoulders for not getting them.

According to other responses to your posts on this board and others maybe you should "try some reading comprehension".........

Go study up on what Matta has done during his coaching career (less than 15 years) and compare his winning %'s, conf titles, wins per year, etc to all of the other major coaches.

We can all complain about how he coaches, recurits whatever, it is all our right to have an opinion. coffee
