Your biggest misses on predicting former Buckeyes careers

  • I've been following recruiting since Coach Tressel took over for Coach Cooper. I thought it would be interesting those players who you thought would be great, but never turned out. Here are a few of mine:

Mike D'Andrea--I remember how obsessed everyone was over his recruitment. Everyone thought he was going to be one of the greats. Ironically enough, it was fellow 2002 recruit AJ Hawk who would add to TOSU's LB lore. Injuries derailed his career.

Louis Irizarry--Long recruitment. Went from TOSU lock to surprising Miami verbal before signing with TOSU. He was suppose to be the transformational TE. Similar to how it never worked out for Irizarry (off field legal problems), TEs never became more than blockers in the Tressel era.

Jamario O'Neal--Was offered as a sophomore and I believe was a verbal early his junior year. He did end up contributing a little bit, but never came close to the hype.

Eugene Clifford--Was our top recruit in 2007. Thought he would be the one to change around our safety recruiting. Loved his weed more than his football and eventually left the program.

Dorian Bell--Continually had off the field issues that led to suspensions. So much talent in HS. Perhaps he makes a mark after transferring, but I will not hold my breath.

David Durham--Why is Durham on my list? This is my personal miss. Although Durham was not highly rated, It thought he would be a monster at DE. Never saw the field on defense and was switched to FB. May make an impact there after transferring from TOSU, but he will always be a big miss from what my expectations were for him.

There are so many others out there, but I'd like to hear some of yours.

  • Etienne Sabino and Travis Howard. Thought they were gonna be great here. Still have a year left, though.

  • I thought Jamaal Berry was going to be a Reggie Bush-esque back for OSU. His highschool highlight tape was more exciting than any back in recent memory. Too bad that things haven't panned out. Not that big of a deal in terms of football, but I hope that the kid finishes his education and and avoids the things that have caused him problems.

Which reminds my of Maurice Clarett. Can you imagine what he would have looked like as a junior? Such a waste of God-given talent. At least Maurice seems to be on the up and up in terms of his decisions, which is much more important than football. But can you imagine what he would have looked like as junior? Insane.

  • Lydell Ross was a servicable player. But, his trajectory was pointed high after his freshman year and he never regained it. I would consider him somewhat of a miss because of just not really improving upon where he started.

Melvin Fellows. I figured that his career would be much more impactful.

I remember having some really high hopes for Henton as well.

  • D'Andrea is certainly the first to come to mind, but Sabino comes right after following the LB thinking. I was one of the worst when it came to doubting the coaches after not allowing Sabino more game time. This eventually led to me trusting the coaches more in what they see in practice, then what I thought I seen in his limited time. Thankfully Shaziers play this year let me back in the game feeling like perhaps the coaches aren't mistake proof in their decisions on who gets time and who don't.

Zwick and Jamal Berry would be the next two. I really thought 5 star Berry (believe he was the #2 back in the country) would do big things, possibly Heisman potential here at OSU.

    Henton, Saine

You can not blame Saine a whole lot...I don't think tress ever really knew what to do with him...he was a much better pass catcher than he was rb..aaron rogers said he has the best set of hands on the packers roster....but I would go with Ray Small..he failed on and off the field..and really..he got into tressels doghouse...how many players actually managed that feet.

Wasn't blaming Saine in the slightest. The thread is asking for who I thought would be more productive than they were...not blaming someone. I was simply amazed at his side speed combo

Melvin Fellows. I figured that his career would be much more impactful.

I remember having some really high hopes for Henton as well.

I co-sign the Lydell Ross addition to this list. I was actually very good friends with his brother Derrik. I met him at an Ohio State bar in Chicago and we ended up being really close friends. I met and hung out with Lydell on a several different occasions after he had used his eligibility, but was still on campus. He actually stayed at my house the New Year that we beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. I'm aware of his reputation, but I knew him as a great kid who was just a little too immature to handle the big stage of Ohio State. He wanted nothing more than to be a great Ohio State running back, and he knows that he let a lot of people down with his performance on the field.

His father played football for Indiana and everyone (including his Dad) thought Lydell was going going to play at Notre Dame for Bob Davie. When Lydell announced for Ohio State on signing day it was as much of a surprise to his family as it was to the media. His Dad actually refused to talk to him for quite some time after he announced for Ohio State. Their relationship was even strained after Lydell had greaduated. He was definitely a disappointment on the field, but I can tell you first hand that our beloved Coach Tresell made a very lasting impression on him. He's a great human being, and a true Buckeye. Before the "he sold his national championship ring haters come out" I'll respond.

I was a mortgage broker back on 2004, 05, 06 and I was making serious money for a 26 year old kid. Lydell called me one day out of the blue asking if he could borrow some money for rent and other bills. It was only 500 or 600 bucks, but I don't lend money to ANYONE, not even family, so I turned him down. Lending people money just strains relationships and takes away the true meaning and pleasure of being friends with someone. His brother called me a couple of weeks later and told me that Lydell had put his ring up for sale and that he wanted to tell me before I saw it on the internet. I called Lydell immediately and asked how he could do something like that. How could he cheapen what means so much to all of the fans out there. His response was that he had no choice. He didn't have a job. He was still in school and all his support from the University had run out. I told him that I was very disappointed, but I understood and I had no hard feelinga. Lydell saw me as a true Buckeye fan, someone who bled scarlet and grey, and he definitely didn't want to let me down. My point is that these kids are a lot more than the people that we see playing on that field on Saturday. They have lives, problems and conflicts that they have to deal with knowing that hundreds of thousands of people are going to pass judgement. Sure, they are getting free college educations and getting to do what all of us wish we could, but there lives aren't simple.

It really bothers me when I see threads like the one beating on Willy Buford earlier today. Sure, Buford has struggled this season, but do you think that any of us are as affected by his struggles as he is? Absolutely not. Every shot he misses he probably thinks about how he is letting Buckeye Nation down and not living up to our expectations. He's a great player. He has been a Buckeye for almost four years and won us a lot of games. Does he deserve to be talked about on a message board. Yeah sure. However, he doesn't deserve the disrespect that some of you give him. When he stops playing defense, stops hustling up and down the court and stops caring, then beat on him. Until then, support him because he cares and wants nothing more than to make us proud.

Sorry for the ridiculous rant, but I'm drunk. I just got done having amazing sex with one of the freakiest chicks I've ever been with and I'm addicted to this Bucknuts thing.

    Goodnight and GO BUCKS!
