  • Rob rose for me.

Dude was a physical freak and dominated multiple all star games. He came here and gained so much weight and became a bust.

I'm not going to name names, but I know one of the reasons some of the fellas listed or thought of didn't pan out is simply steroid use. In high school you can get away with more than at the college level. The injuries that come with steroid use for some guys can also be an issue. I know a couple of fellas spoken of or that come to mind are confirmed juicers. That is one reason talent is hard to judge sometimes. It is sad and ugly....but true.

Exactly right. The player really plateau or regress after they get off the juice to stay clean for NCAA tests. Steroid use in high school happens much more frequently than we'd like to admit.

Irizarry comes to mind as a huge disappointment, but does anyone remember Ira Guilford(4 star safety) who was stealing laptops with him. He had some hype himself. Those two kids were high on the recruiting boards and I thought both were going to be huge buckeyes.

Irizzary had serious anger management issues. The final straw was when Ira and Louis cold clocked two kids walking back from the business school library on College Avenue near Woodruff and stole their wallets early on a Friday evening . They then were hanging out in their get away car on 12th avenue.

Louis also knocked out a kid in my dorm because he thought this kid was hitting on his girlfriend because the kid used her microwave for popcorn since his was broken. Hopefully he's changed his ways, because I was nervous just to walk by him on campus

Shocked no one has mentioned Lamar "Flash" Thomas. Thought Thomas was going to be Percy Harvin. Not saying Diggs is Flash, but they went to same high school, both were considered to WR's/scat backs, and both are of similar stature.

  • I honestly thought that Troy Smith had the "It Factor" that would bring him success in the NFL. I was dead wrong on that one.

  • I would add Maurice Clarett to my list as well. I thought he would win a Heisman and be the next Eddie George.

I co-sign the Lydell Ross addition to this list. I was actually very good friends with his brother Derrik. I met him at an Ohio State bar in Chicago and we ended up being really close friends. I met and hung out with Lydell on a several different occasions after he had used his eligibility, but was still on campus. He actually stayed at my house the New Year that we beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. I'm aware of his reputation, but I knew him as a great kid who was just a little too immature to handle the big stage of Ohio State. He wanted nothing more than to be a great Ohio State running back, and he knows that he let a lot of people down with his performance on the field.

His father played football for Indiana and everyone (including his Dad) thought Lydell was going going to play at Notre Dame for Bob Davie. When Lydell announced for Ohio State on signing day it was as much of a surprise to his family as it was to the media. His Dad actually refused to talk to him for quite some time after he announced for Ohio State. Their relationship was even strained after Lydell had greaduated. He was definitely a disappointment on the field, but I can tell you first hand that our beloved Coach Tresell made a very lasting impression on him. He's a great human being, and a true Buckeye. Before the "he sold his national championship ring haters come out" I'll respond.

I was a mortgage broker back on 2004, 05, 06 and I was making serious money for a 26 year old kid. Lydell called me one day out of the blue asking if he could borrow some money for rent and other bills. It was only 500 or 600 bucks, but I don't lend money to ANYONE, not even family, so I turned him down. Lending people money just strains relationships and takes away the true meaning and pleasure of being friends with someone. His brother called me a couple of weeks later and told me that Lydell had put his ring up for sale and that he wanted to tell me before I saw it on the internet. I called Lydell immediately and asked how he could do something like that. How could he cheapen what means so much to all of the fans out there. His response was that he had no choice. He didn't have a job. He was still in school and all his support from the University had run out. I told him that I was very disappointed, but I understood and I had no hard feelinga. Lydell saw me as a true Buckeye fan, someone who bled scarlet and grey, and he definitely didn't want to let me down. My point is that these kids are a lot more than the people that we see playing on that field on Saturday. They have lives, problems and conflicts that they have to deal with knowing that hundreds of thousands of people are going to pass judgement. Sure, they are getting free college educations and getting to do what all of us wish we could, but there lives aren't simple.

It really bothers me when I see threads like the one beating on Willy Buford earlier today. Sure, Buford has struggled this season, but do you think that any of us are as affected by his struggles as he is? Absolutely not. Every shot he misses he probably thinks about how he is letting Buckeye Nation down and not living up to our expectations. He's a great player. He has been a Buckeye for almost four years and won us a lot of games. Does he deserve to be talked about on a message board. Yeah sure. However, he doesn't deserve the disrespect that some of you give him. When he stops playing defense, stops hustling up and down the court and stops caring, then beat on him. Until then, support him because he cares and wants nothing more than to make us proud.

Sorry for the ridiculous rant, but I'm drunk. I just got done having amazing sex with one of the freakiest chicks I've ever been with and I'm addicted to this Bucknuts thing.

    Goodnight and GO BUCKS!

I remember watching a 2001 game against Northwestern I believe where Johnathan Wells was getting a breather and Lydell Ross (true freshman at the time) came in and ran for like a 60 yd td and I got excited for him and thought he was going to be the future, then clarett arrived on campus.

I thought Jamaal Berry was going to be a Reggie Bush-esque back for OSU. His highschool highlight tape was more exciting than any back in recent memory. Too bad that things haven't panned out. Not that big of a deal in terms of football, but I hope that the kid finishes his education and and avoids the things that have caused him problems.

Which reminds my of Maurice Clarett. Can you imagine what he would have looked like as a junior? Such a waste of God-given talent. At least Maurice seems to be on the up and up in terms of his decisions, which is much more important than football. But can you imagine what he would have looked like as junior? Insane.

Maurice Clarett I met him in California right before he messed up and then again after he did his jail time he really is a nice guy he has changed 100% for the better & really Loves Thee Ohio State University! !! We talked more about change then anything, he had a big head before & people were pulling him in a million directions. He would of came back that next year to a team that was loaded he would of competed for the Heismon. He's happy to be alive and I'm happy for the young man. What a freshman year though huh???

    Henton, Saine

Why do I have a feeling Saine would have been a perfect fit for Meyer's offense? Get speed in space and let them be fast.

We tried to take that speed and run it through the tackles.

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son. -- Dean Wormer

  • Easiest one for me is Terelle Pryor.

People were ready to anoint him the next Vince Young, I remember thinking that if we got him we'd be looking at atleast 1 national title. As much as people are gonna hate me for saying this, I truly believe 50% of his under development falls on Tressel/Bollman, because Terelle said it best "If I was at Oregon or Auburn I would put up monster numbers too" and I truly believe that the system did his on the field performance in. As I say that though you have to wonder if because of his off the field performance whether he would've panned out in a full time spread style offense, I say it wouldn't have made a difference because he got into trouble off the field.

Great story, I recall Lydell being very big fast and talented hejust seemed to get hurt easily and seemed to have bad vision. He should have been better but oh we'll.

Mo C would have been a nightmare (in a good way) his jr year.

Lydell Ross wouldn't have got many carries if Dru Humphries would have not passed.

  • Rob Rose. I remember one of the analysts (Kirk H?) saying after the all star game down in Texas that Rob Rose was unblockable and a can't miss prospect.
