Call me a homer, but think Tress' teams will prove to be more talented than Hoke's as well. The core of Hoke's classes will come from Ohio and national recruits, and i just can't foresee a situation in which his classes rank as consistently strong as Tress', both on signing day and in hindsight.

All Tress's teams were built on Ohio Kids both elite and just below elite with a light sprinkle of national kids, mostly from Florida and Penn/Ind/Mich/Ill. Very similar to what Hoke is building. He will get his classes, just like Tress did and so far he might be out recruiting Tress in some ways.

Unfortunately he is going to run into a buzzsaw here with Urban, who will go anywhere and everywhere to get the best players. No settling in that man.

  • He might be coming up with a team in the form of what Tress had here but the most important factor in that is "Tress" himself, Hoke isnt on that level and I doubt he will be.. Helps building a team with solid coaches around you but a few more of those 4 and 5 loss seasons and Hoke may be on the hotseat.

He's recruiting well, but that isn't the point. He needs to win something first. Even Zook went to a Rose Bowl. I am Not saying he will never be good, I'm saying he's still never won anything. At any place he's coached.

I agree he has to win, but he also has to be put in a situation to win and I think he'll get that at Michigan whether we like it or not. Again the problem being he is going to continue to sit on a team just like Tress did and there is a reason those teams got waxed on national stages as much as we as fans tried to argue to the contrary.

I don't think in this B1G and with the skill he is bringing in you will see too many seasons of 4 and 5 losses. Again he is going to have to play us every year and there in lies his problem. He will have to beat Urban to win those championships and with the players Urban is recruiting I just don't see that happening much.

  • well we know why Coop was fired...2-11 against scum and 3-8 bowl record... all the talent the dude had, just cant understand what made the big wins so elusive for him

  • Except hoax isn't landing the top Ohio kids. Osu still is. So tress' best teams were still better than what hoax will get. Plus their recruiting ranking are slanted because of how many kids they signed taking little regard into what their team actually needs.

Hoax will have a five star oline with three star skill players, lb's, and db's. Tress at least had four star and five star position groups all around not just at one position.

Time will tell. I just don't envision Hoke assembling a team with the dominating defenses of some of Tress' teams or with offensive playmakers in the ginn, holmes, wells, brax, etc. mold. Agreed the disconnect between OSU and the rest of the big ten will continue to grow with time (knock on wood), but I'd be surprised if Hoke's teams play a sustainably high level like Tress'. Keeping strong assistants on board is key.

Hoke hasn't even won a fucking MAC championship. Why is he called "elite" in all kinds of national media? Even Herbstreit calls him elite. Don't you have to win SOMETHING first!? Even a whiffle ball championship is better than NOTHING.'

  • Deanard Robinson saved scUM so many times during Hoke's first year he should have him on speed dial instead of 911. D.R. is gone an even if Gardner suddenly blossoms into the "top athlete on the field" title which they have already bestowed upon him...I wonder what their game plan is for the times he will not be able to answer the bell. Morris? He's no Kenny Guiton.

+1 I cant understand why scum fans are gushing over gardner starting at qb if he was that good he would have gotten the nod over arm punt, and they would have switched detard to running back.

  • Hoke has never won a championship

Not in the WOL not in the Mac certainly joy in the Big 10

You don't wake up at 50 and become a champion

Hoke has never been to a B1G championship yet... so does the optimism come because of recruiting? It seems as if even OSU fans are giving Hoke the benefit of doubt. Recruiting is major, but I have not seen scUM dominate anyone but lower level competition.

Their fans have become a strange lot since the early RR era. Records don't really matter - they hang their hats on potential and smack talk. There is no hint of irony whatsoever when they rip on Sparty for being "Little Bro", even though Sparty is cleaning up on the field and mire than holding their own in in-state recruiting. They wines incessantly that Delaney didn't grant them an automatic slot in the B1G championship game because they thought they earned it. They've done nothing in ten years, but they're confident that they and the Buckeyes will split championships for the rest of time.

Hoke will get that back to being competitive, but he's not a good enough gameday coach to beat beget talent. God help him if Mattison ever leaves.

  • Yes, their recruiting classes have been ranked high, BUT have they truly recruited well? Having taken so many OL, that were 4 and 5 stars is good and all but have they really recruited a solid team? They are believing if they have an OL that dominates the LOS then they can do what they want when in reality, if they don't have a good QB and some WR's that can get separation they aren't going to roll over anybody. They constantly argue that Bama uses this model. Well, Bama has also had some pretty good WR's on the field. If you don't have anyone on the outside to keep the safeties interest, then you also aren't going to be able to run the ball. Notre Dame and TTUN can attest to that as they were both mauled this year. Once Saban saw there was no threat on the outside he just turned the defense up and neither could move the ball. DRob and Golsen had no chance because their receivers couldn't get free. So, since TTUN coaches say "speed is overrated" I don't really think they will be just lining up and running it right over us. With our DB recruiting vs their WR recruiting I'm not too worried.

so, every now and then for a bit of comedy relief I find myself checking out the latest on what our rivals are up to, as I am sure many others do as well. and today was special, so someone actually started a thread stating that hokey pokey will be as great as "bo" by the time he leaves. and I have to say I am amazed at the amount of people drinking the kool aid over there that actually think he will be "great". interested to hear anyone elses thoughts on this

Is Hoke great compared to Rich Rodriguez? Yes. Is he going to be great compared to Bo? No.

The highest rated players in their last 2 classes have been OL...You cannot line all 11-12 of them up. They have also signed big classes. They will have classes with less than 20 recruits the next 2 years...in 2015 we get 3 scholarships back.

Outside of Dymonte name a DB thy have gotten that's is elite talent wise? That's not a guarantee Dymonte will pan out. Ramon Taylor...hot garbage...Terry Richardson? Countess? He may not ever be the same after the injury.

What about WR's? They lose 4-5 after this season and the young ones thy have are all SE types...slow..

I have not seen a young RB that scares me. Fitz is gone after this year...Maybe Green or Smith will b studs but only one can tote the rock.

Shane Morris? 2-3 years as backup before you can even think that kid has a chance to do anything...Bellomy...I pray that h plays against us this year...

I see QB,CB,S,and WR being huge holes for them in the future.

I hope they continue to strike out on skill players. I hope thy sign 3-4 more OL this year in a small class.

Hoke's success all depends on how long he can keep Greg Mattison in AA.

The guy is already old. He is already pushing 64.

  • Hoke is building a powerful downhill running team that may be at it's best in cold weather such as November. While we continue to get smaller faster players I hope we also recruit more power in the offense so we can also play smash mouth in cold weather and neutralize their power and beat them with speed.
