Are we filling needs or "grabbing stars"?

  • The penn state board has a thread going saying urban just goes for the best players without regard to a balanced team. At first my thought was that yeah we have a lot of studs at DE and OLB. But in the past 2 classes we also have
2 really solid and different QBs
    3 above avg RBs
1 good blocking TE and 1 great H-back
A decent spread (inside / outside) of lineman
An awesome athlete, a few solid WRs including probable starter in thomas
And now we have a great corps of secondary players

    What else is there?!

  • Easy for PSU fans to say this considering they need about everything. At the position OSU is in they can afford to take the best players and not the needs. OSU has good players that just need to be coached up. Only real need is the O-line but it's not like URB isn't recruiting them. Other fans will come up with the most stupid things to try and down URB. Ok think about it......Urb tells Bosa oh wait.....we NEED o-lineman more so we can't accept you......really? They all are idiots full of envy lol buckeyes

  • TBF, we are in desperate need of a 2-3 more offensive lineman and 1-2 playmakers on offense. Now, if we get those, everyone will have to stop making that argument. But, if a few fall through, we will have definitely ignored need positions. My guess is we will only get one more Olineman and we will be thin at that position but will get the playmaking WRs.

AllDay has it nailed. To say desperate may be an understatement, it's a position of dire need. I would risk missing on a few O-playmakers to get a handful of O-haymakers.

  • For the love of football!! Urban knows how to recruit. Two NC playing in the sec. Hate saying that but it's true. He beat the shit out of our Buckeyes. How? His F ing defense was totally awesome.
Stop roaming other boards. They are just jealous as hell.
Go look at the gator's when they won the two NC. The defense set up the offense.

  • I think at this point Urban wants speed so badly he's taking perhaps a little more at some positions then others, but I totally trust a coach with his resume. I'm already blown away by the 2013 class and he hasn't really had a full year to recruit, that 2014 class is going to be insane. I 100% trust and support whatever players Meyers recruits at this point.

  • Why did we come up short in the two BCS championships against the SEC? Our OL and DL were dominated!! Looks like to me Meyer is addressing the DL. Our front seven is going to be nasty! Meyer knows what he is doing, he'll always be able to get skill guys in every class. Depth on the lines is his main focus now. Watch LSU & Bama, they rotate their D lines, stay fresh (both go about 8-10 deep) and don't miss a beat! That's his goal here! Michigan is loading up on the OL, I believe we are out recruiting them with our D line in the last two classes.

  • The hell with them. I thought both Ohio State and PSU were both recruiting him. Maybe they should just mind their own business and start hoping Meyer doesn't take any more of their recruits

One more lineman and we will be "THIN" at that position?
When is the last time you looked at the Depth Chart?
We have so many able and healthy bodies on the Depth Chart, that Warriner went ahead and put Carter over on the Defense, and we still have 14 Scholarships there plus 4 or 5 preferred walk ons that are better than the scholarship lineman on half of the other D l schools in the Country.
We already have Lisle, and I am assuming they will get Posic, so how the Hell are we "THIN" at that position?

We haven't been this deep since the scholarship limit was dropped to the 85 limit from 130.
I have NEVER been more excited about the youth and depth of a team like I am NOW. Almost all of the DEAD scholarships are off the team. And the marginal ones are at least playing Special Teams.

The only position I continue to worry about is Safety for the next 2 years 2013 and 2014 with 6 bodies leaving on top of the 3 that just left.

I posted a thread couple months ago that all of our needs (except for Safety) were met in 2012 recruiting, and that 2013 would be just recruiting for depth, and a chance to go after the absolute cream de la creame. And that is exactly what Urban is doing. Why do you think he let the 5 or 6 Ohio boys cut and run to Michigan who would have committed to Tressel, had Tressel still been here? They are all 4 star players in some services' eyes - but not good enough for Urban. But yet he went after a 3 star Tracey Sprinkle, and a 3 star Lewis Neal.

Either the Ohio boys are not 4 stars, or these guys are not 3 stars (in my eyes), cuz this Lewis Neal is the Real Deal. He DOES start for his HS team! I will take him over the TACO kid everyday of the week. And I will take BOTH Baugh and Heuerman over Jake Butt at TE as well. As a matter of fact, before he committed to them; I thought he would be recruited as a DE and not a TE. I didn't even know he was a TE.

As far as the OP comment.
Penn State is not in the same position we are in, and clearly obvious that those fans are jealous of our situation. They don't sit down and analyze our depth chart to see how young or how deep we really are. The next two years' senior classes are both small. We have soo many Freshmen and Sophomores on this team, and Urban will play them as he is known for.

We all know Michael Thomas is starting at WR right out of the shoot.
Luke Roberts will be playing backup MLB in the first game.
Jacoby Boren will play backup Center in the first game
Taylor Decker is backup LT in the first game.
Brionte Dunn may get some PT in the very first game.
Josh Perry was in the two deep before he got hurt.
SeVon Pittman was impressive before he got hurt.
T Powell will get some PT in the secondary.

And I haven't even mentioned studs like Spence and Washington and Bogard and Murray, and Dodson, because they are not enrolled yet. But as soon as they do, I am sure that Urban will give them every opportunity to compete for an opening.

Well said Marty...wish a few other doubters would trust Urban and staff a little more....it may not seem right to us, but, Urban has done it before and he has a plan and we must let him do what he is hired to do....and he will do it well....and make us proud....

  • This is a bit hypocritical of them. Much of their recent success has been based on them loading up on DL and converting some of them to the OL. We shall see if that happens more frequently. There are some positions of need, but you take great players with great attitudes when you can get them.

  • I agree that addressing needs is more important than star ratings of HS players (SI has an Andy Staples article up on their site right now with a headline stating that "fifteen of the 32 players projected to go in the draft's first round earned three stars or fewer as high school prospects"), but I also believe the coaching staff has been addressing needs very well. We still have nearly nine months before signing day, which gives some time to find more players at positions of need. I feel great about our recruiting right now, and I'm convinced I'll feel better in February when we sign a class that fills our needs very well.

    Zeuslerus

  • To me we needed these dlinemen. Ttun has stockpiled good olinemen the last two years plus we lose three dlinemen. including Simon goebel and possibly hank. We lack true wsde's and leos. Remember as well our lb depth was lacking so these were true needs.

    davebucknut

  • It's never ending. If we recruit our needs, fans want to know why we aren't going after the stars. If we go after the stars, fans want to know why we aren't going after our needs. Who knows better then the coaches what we need, who we want. Sometimes i think its a bunch of ladies on here, bitch about everything. I guess we can have our own opinions but how do we arm chair coaches know what we really all ready have or need. We should all just be happy that it is what it is, Ohio State Football. Go Bucks.

Exactly.....Urban Meyer believes more in the balance of both sides of the ball then any other coach I have seen. It is a full circle for him. The secondary pins the team, the defense gets 3 and outs or turnovers and then the offense scores on a shorter field. Then it starts overs and then again. Eventually now the offense has put the other team in so much of a whole that defense gets to start having real fun........you can't win in his mind without all 3 phases being dominating

You do realize that depth is about more than just bodies, correct? We are clearly thin at OL not just because of the bodies, but because of the lack of talent. And if you are telling me you see a lot of "talented" players on the oline, i'm going to just chuckle to myself and write off your ability to judge anything football related.

Also, Luke Roberts isn't going to be the backup MLB. He's clearly behind strengthwise and will certainly be behind at least Grant and Sabino.

We all know Michael Thomas is starting at WR right out of the shoot. - This would appear to be the case based on Spring Game.

Luke Roberts will be playing backup MLB in the first game. - He got run over by Smith after hitting him at the 5 yd. line. I don't see this happening, looking at Roberts as a probable red shirt to give him some more time to gain strength.

Jacoby Boren will play backup Center in the first game. - This is a very bold prediction and not sure what it is based on.

Taylor Decker is backup LT in the first game. - Maybe so, good reports out of Spring practice, but wouldn't this be a sign of lacking depth?

Brionte Dunn may get some PT in the very first game. - Agreed. Dunn appears to be ready to play beyond his age.

Josh Perry was in the two deep before he got hurt. - Are you sure about this?

SeVon Pittman was impressive before he got hurt. T Powell will get some PT in the secondary. - Agreed on both counts. Canton Mckinley's Steve Miller also looked impressive in the Spring game.

And I haven't even mentioned studs like Spence and Washington and Bogard and Murray, and Dodson, because they are not enrolled yet. But as soon as they do, I am sure that Urban will give them every opportunity to compete for an opening. - I don't like getting too excited about guys who aren't here yet. Spence and Washington may both be ready for prime time, but we would have thought that of Curtis Grant also. Some HS guys are so physically dominant, that they don't need to develop technique or good work habits. When everyone catches up with them physically, there can be an adjustment level where good coaching, work ethic, and patience is needed to get them ready to play and bring their games up a notch.

  • Defense wins championships!!!!

IMO WRs like Brown, Smith, Spencer, Thomas, Reed, etc... can get the job done. They will improve as Miller improves at QB.

OLine is a need position. However, those believing OLine is in dire shape have no confidence in Brown, Underwood, and Carter and have written those 3 off.

I believe there will be 2 more Olinemen in the 2013 class, and 1-2 more WRs. That's not as many as many wanted. However, the defense will be loaded.
