B1G; Ranking the Secondaries

  • 4. Ohio State Buckeyes

Last year’s Ohio State defense was impressive, but very young, and this year almost the entire unit returns. The whole secondary will be back and will look to build on a solid 2011.

Travis Howard and Bradley Roby return at cornerback for the Buckeyes, while CJ Barnett and Christian Bryant return at safety for a secondary that could have some All-Big Ten talent.

While it won’t get as much hype as the OSU front seven, expect Urban Meyer’s first secondary in Columbus to hold its own among the rest of the Big Ten.

  • Fourth? I might be able to see third, but there's no way I'll believe Michigan's secondary will be better than OSU's this season. I don't know enough about Iowa's secondary to have much of an opinion there.

  • First, looks like this was written by a couple student reporters for Northwestern's school paper, which makes them far from qualified to be ranking anything other than NU's hottest co-ed (short list there). Second, what does scUM's thinness at QB have to do with why they were riddled through the air last year? Is it possible the reporters' intent and the editor's miss that it should have read "cornerback" instead of "quarterback," which would help explain their point better? Or are they trying to make some correlation to Velcro's inability to move the ball through the air resulted in scUM's defense being on the field too much?

I don't know how you take a secondary with 4.5 returning starters (counting Orhian Johnson) and rank it lower than one that's banking on a true freshman. And with our front four putting pressure on QBs and our faster and more experienced LBs covering the middle, slots and flats, I'm confident our front seven's depth and tenacity will result in even better secondary play, especially if Travis Howard or Doran Grant--whichever one doesn't start--plays nickelback, which would give us better 1-on-1 coverage than we'd get with Orhian playing the nickel. And if the secondary steps up with better coverage, it should result in a lot more coverage sacks.

I think we'll pressure the QB much better this season, because we'll have true QB rushers in the mix. This won't be the same defensive line. It sounds like Nathan Williams is going to be playing again. Plus, we'll have Noah Spence and Adolphus Washington, two of the top rated QB rush recruits in the nation. I also expect the LB play to be much better. Last year, the secondary had to cover for what seemed like 10 seconds every play, which is impossible no matter how good you are. I'm going to stick with some optimism.

agree. I think coach coombs would argue that rank. He is a more intense and in your face coach with these players. Watch and see

doesn't matter if you doin't have the talent at safety ... i don't see doss, or kurt coleman or whitner ... DB's should be good ..

  • With the exception of Zach Smith, I think almost every new coach we have is an upgrade over the guy he replaced. Jury's out on Smith, who technically replaced Drayton, who's got a lot more experience on Smith even if it was coaching RBs.

HC: Meyer > Fickel & a wash versus Tressel...for now
    QB: Herman > Siciliano
    OL: Warinner > Bollman
    TE: Hinton > Peterson
    RB: Drayton = Doc Tressel
DL: Vrabel > Fickel, who belongs at LB
LB: Fickel > Vrabel, who belongs at DL
CB: Coombs = Johnson > Sheridan
    S: Withers > Haynes
    ST: Meyer > Doc Tressel

  • Not sure how good the defensive backfield will end up but their biggest area of improvement will be the Urban Meyer offense. Not having to hold opponents every week in order for us to win is going to keep the guys from wearing out late in the season and at the end of games.

I get the sentiment, but I don't really think that's the case at all. The attitude seems to be that they "have" to hold opponents every week regardless of what the offense does. Do you get the impression these coaches are going to let players play less hard on defense? No way. They have to hold the other team every game, every possession. No breathers on the field.

You could say less 3-and-outs helps the D rest, but the no-huddle offense also puts them back out there quicker/more often. That's a wash at best. The strategy to keep guys from wearing out seems to be getting them in freakish condition and having the ability to rotate guys up front.

As for the secondary, on paper they look top 2 to me, they have both talent and experience. As others said, if the pass rush works out they'll look even better than they are.
