Boren and the first 5 games

  • It seems everyone is in agreement that OSU will be running a run heavy offense for the first five games so here is my question for all of you. Who else is excited to watch Boren destroy linebackers for five straight weeks? I can't be the only fan of a big fullback crushing linebackers in the hole!!! This is going to be fun to watch!!!

  • Love the collision aspect of football. The speed and the wide open offenses have diluted the purest form of football over the last 3 decades, the blocking and tackling.

  • I agree with you 32. I love the I formation and power football. Nothing is better than watching an offense punish another team by running down their throats and crushing the will of defense.

There is something to be said about mixing up the offense, but I wouldn't hold your breath about Zach getting many carries especially with the talent we have lined up behind him. .

Interesting stat: Total number of carries by a starting fullback in the last FIVE years..... Two...Zach 1 carry for 2 yards last year and Dionte Johnson 1 carry for -1 yard in 2007.

I think he is much more dangerous as a reciever than a runner.

  • I don't know. If you thinking of these last few years, they've never been able to just run at will over people. Beanie made hay with great talent, often turning bad plays into touchdowns. But I seem to remember OSU having trouble running all over teams like OU, even YSU. Their numbers may have ended up in the impressive column, but I don't think anyone watching those and so many other games came away with "man, we just ran all over them." The Bucks have a great stable of backs, yes, but none of them has proven to be a healthy Beanie yet, so for me, I want to see what looks to be a more West Coast offense, with lots of passes to those great backs. With any luck it could prove to be an interesting and effective offense. It should be fun---and, hopefully, enough.

Agreed here, watching a power football team impose their will and shove the ball down the other team's throat is a joy to watch. (as long as it's my team doing the imposing...) People sometimes forget that the game of football really is won in the trenches; you could have all the talent in the world at the skill positions but if the line isn't doing their job they become nonfunctional. Watching the 2008 NY Giants beat the New England Patriots in the Superbowl was one of the best displays of this I've ever seen. Our depth and talent on the D-Line is good enough to carry us through quite a few games provided the offense isn't completely incompetent.

  • Nice thread & original post.

I am totally stoked to see this young man knock the crap out of LBs and even D-Lineman. His brother brought the 'tude back to our O-Line, and the word on Zach is that he is "more into football" than his Justin. Justin is supposed to be interested in other things whereas Zach is all football all the time.

Even if he doesn't get many touches, I hope that ZB can continue the "Boren 'Tude" on our whole offense to play with physical & mental toughness.....I think that kind of thing can be infectious.

Don't forget - this kid is not only tough as nails, he's also an athlete - remember this play?

I would agree with you 1000% that Boren wouldn't see carries if it weren't for one thing-----JT won't be coaching.

Let's not forget that the first 5 games are a defacto audition for Fick to D1 college football to show them all he has what it takes to whip all of them. How's he going to do it? He sure as hell won't be doing Tressel ball all day long that's for sure. He's going to run a few plays to show people the talent that is underused at tOSU. Because of that, I think Boren will see carries......or he'll see some short passes before he does a D9 Bulldozer through everyone in his path.

  • I wish the Bucks would incorporate a few quiuck hits with the fullback similar to what W Va did when Owen Schmidt was there. Get that little crease and the next thing you know you have 250 running downhill, going to pick up a few yards.

The Giants over the Patriots was a great example of that, but a different Giants team might be an even better example. The 1990 Giants that beat the Bills in Superbowl XXV. They held the ball for over 40 minutes, which kept Jim Kelly and their high scoring no-huddle offense off the field. The Giants won that Superbowl with their backup QB, and a 34 year old tailback. Having guys like Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks, and Pepper Johnson helped too.

  • I would not be suprised to see Zach have more catches in the 1st 5 games than he did all of last year. They are gonna live off short passes. The TE's and backs are gonna be used ALOT. Get used to it. The Miami and MSU games are gonna be ugly and hopefully we pull it out.

Some very good news out of the spring is that the kickers have looked much better. Both Basil and BB have looked outstanding. The kicking will be vital the first 5 games. I'm glad Miami lost their dual threat kicker.

Very astute analysis... you beat me by just a few minutes! I fully anticipate seeing a ton of power football, with most of the passes being short and hitting the tall TEs and the athletic FB. This will be his time to shine as a blocker and receiver.

  • Can't wait to watch Zach this year. I think he'll be a bigger beast than ever. Guess he has no choice. Also can't wait until Jacoby comes on board. These Boren boys are something else!!!

That last line makes me laugh. Can you believe we stole these Boren boys from UofM? I hope the coaching staff reads the quotes from Michigan fans and coaches about how the Boren's (directed at Justin) are whiny b*tches. I would remind Zach about that every day as a coach just to piss him off so much he knocks the UofM linebackers heads off when they meet him in the hole.

Thank you Rich Rod for sending the Boren's our way. We really appreciate it!!!!

No, it will not be a time to cut JT about his use of talent, so you can forget that thought.

Yes, Fickell may show a bit of himself in the calls, but remember as well that really, the play calling will still mostly be with Bollman. Fickell isn't going to let himself be seen as the guy who handed the team back to JT with a loss that was brought on by Fickell himself.

    I just don't see it.

Thanks for that post, I was thinking similar things while reading the recent posts. Amazing that such a family has turned to the "light" after being on the dark side.

And what a coup for OSU! Even with Hoke back up there, the die has been cast and the Boren's are solid supporters of all things Buckeye.

Indeed, RR was one of the best things OSU has had happen in the past five years!

    I hope you're right.
But unless we have a killer offensive line, we're in for a long "first season". (first five games).
Chances are, our quarterback won't offer much of a consistent deep threat.
That's really what opens up the short passing and running game.
    Opposing defenses will know that.
They'll just play closer to the line..
And that puts all the pressure on this offensive line.
I think they're capable of answering the call..
But in recent years, when we haven't had that consistent deep threat, our offensive has been anemic.
    Agreed, Boren is a beast.
For the short passes and running game to work in the first five games, despite all the talent, our line will need to
    be a bigger beast!

Good point. Not trying to be a contrarian here, but for the past two seasons, opposing defenses have had to keep one eye on Pryor at all times and that opened up opportunities for our RBs to gain rushing yards. With Pryor out of the mix until October, even Akron and Toledo will be loading the box and daring whoever is at QB to throw. While I agree this stable of RBs is a very exciting one, unless our offensive line and its schemes allow them to block effectively while being outnumbered, I suggest some moderation in our hopes for an explosive running game.

I don't know if we will be as "dominant" as many think we will be in the run game for the first (5) games this season. I certainly have some reservations about the o-line working well together by the Miami game (game 3). Miami does have the athletes to cause us some problems and they will EXPECT us to try and bash'em with the run game. If they can pressure our QB (Bauser if he starts) & slow the run game, I do not like our chances completeing many passes. Our defense should be able to slow Miami; however, they will put points on the board. This is going to be a nail-bitter. I would not mind seeing Kenny/ Brax running the offense, this would gives us an extra dimension to keep Al Golden worrying about our QB taking off. IMO

    Aiken,
I agree with you about the oline. Every year I get excited about the oline (those scarlet and grey glasses work great in the spring...you know, before any games are played!!!), only to get disappointed by the way the oline plays in the beginning of the year. With that said, those glasses are in full swing again this spring and I see a bunch of road graters kicking some dline/linebackers a$$es this fall.

  • Great thread and posts. Any true football fan has got to love the way Boren plays. I must agree, however, with those thinking we shouldn't get too excited, because _every_ team is going to put 8-10 in the box and _make_ the Bucks prove they can do something more than short passes and runs. Its hard to punish a good team when they have a numbers advantage at the point of attack. That's why the receiver corps and QBs _must_ step up. If so, then we get to see Boren iso on a 'backer and destrooooy him!

    hmmm
