Brent Musburger; "Penn State Football Innocent"

  • Exactly. Even they seem more then happy with the punishment. Why is this? They claim they were worried about multiple year death penalty. If that's the case, this was merely a plea bargain. I'm guessing it was part of the "plea bargain" that the NCAA goes by the report and don't investigate on their own. Bunch O' skeletons.

I have to question why Penn State let the NCAA fast track the ruling then agree to it without a fight. Some people say because they just want to get this behind them and start rebuilding as soon as possible, I don't buy that. I think Penn State gave in because they have way to many skeletons in the closet and if anyone starts digging, they would find enough to shut them down for good. I hate that things like this effect others who had nothing to do with the scandal but a lot of Ohio State players got hurt by what a few idiots did, You didn't see anyone from Penn State or ESPIN coming to Ohio States defense, they wanted us to die a slow death.

Sorry, I meant to quote this.

The NCAA has bylaws on ethics. So yes, they can certainly come down with penalties. This was not a standard infractions case. Emmert said that in his presser. That's why he went to the board. Every single member of the board agreed that something must be done. They sat around and discussed what they would do. They let Penn State know this is what they wanted to do. Penn State agreed and signed a decree. The end. If Penn State didn't agree I have no doubt they could have forced this into an infractions situation where in all likelihood harsher penalty would've been rightfully enacted.

I'm not sure what some folks are getting upset about. The NCAA basically fast-tracked the whole deal to PSU's benefit. I cannot overstate this. To PSU's benefit. The last thing they would've wanted would be for this to be dragged out over 1-2 years because rest assured that would be 1-2 more years of potential bad press and potential issues with recruiting.

+1 Upvote. The best thing for their program was not to let this drag on for a year.

I just don't get the vibe of people on here anymore. It's seems like everyone hates everything besides OSU. WTF is going on with this board.

This is probably only a hadnful of people on here that actually have a realistic mind, and can think outside the box.

Hmmmm... HC, AD, and President cover up child molestation by a coach?

How many players did Sandusky have a direct hand in recruiting?

    Unfair advantage?

    You make the call?

People are rightfully pissed about the way PSU fans treated us last year. The way a lot of people are rejoicing in this reminds me precisely of how other fans piled on OSU. But I just don't believe in returning a wrong for wrong.

There are actually other ways to view this situation as evidenced by Mandel and Musberger's arguments and now, apparently Dave Biddle.

Problem is that NCAA action was correct. I will never think otherwise. Don't give a shit what others think on this and won't try to persuade others to my thinking.

  • They talk about the "Culture of Football" and Brent Musberger is a big part of the problem as are Mike & Mike and any other sports show promoting amateur athletics. ESPN is also guilty when they promote athletes at the ripe old age of 10, 11 and 12. The culture of football is one of complete disgust to any person with a modicum amount of decency in their systems.

Exactly, Dan, as Musberger has overstayed his welcome in the world of sports. He is now just another blithering idiot who reminds me of the guy arrested for soliciting prostitutes but is now back to announcing. Cannot remember his name. That's how impressive he is.

Chuck...do some reading before you post. PSU agreed with the report!!! WTF man?!?!?!?

That's like saying when someone confesses to a murder we should still go through with an investigation and trial.

What choice did they have? With the emmense pressure on the school to resolve this, and people like yourself who refuse to take a step back and look at the absolute uniqueness of this situation (regardless of the heineous acts), they had no choice. (this is where you tell me kids were raped to inject emotion and public rage into this derailing any attempt to look at it objectively, and then insult me some more while you're at it)

What you dont get is the result may be the same at the end, but you absolutely refuse to allow it to get there.

So you now have a precedent off a report that the school could not object to for public policy reasons.

Some people see the consequences and danger of rushing to resolve something rather than taking your time.

You can't challenge anything to do with child molestation- they cannot win as ultimately, as you see on this board, it is an emotionally charged issue.

They had no choice but to acquiesce.

The result may also be the same after an investigation. Trust me, they consulted as many public relations experts as well as legal experts as they could. I'm sure their decision to accept the report was the only choice they had.

And I have taken a step back and looked at the uniqueness of the situation. So has the NCAA and that's why they did something so unprecedented and handed down this penalty so quickly.

NCAA rules are not a court of law, therefore not subject to due process. That is why there is no due process. We had this same issue with OSU last year. ALL D-1 schools are a part of the NCAA and in agreement to be governed by it's bylaws. Mark Emmert said it best in that this is a matter of common decency. The school Pres, VP, AD, iconic HC, (and lord knows who else), conspired for years to keep this issue quiet. That is an absolute fact. No, Penn State, alums, fans, & athletes didn't rape little boys, it's leaders allowed it to happen, thus allowing Sandusky to use it's football program and facillities as bait. That is also a fact. This is worse type of LOIC to EVER happen. Using the logic of "we are punishing the players who had nothing to do with this" is ridiculous. That garbage could just as easily be applied to any school placed under NCAA sanctions. PeeSU has agreed to the punishment. The NCAA proposed the punishment and told them that they could contest it, but if more came out, they WOULD get the death penalty. PeeSU chose correctly. There is much, much more to this....trust me. Things like payoffs. How else do you think this stayed quiet for so many years? How anyone can really believe this is not the NCAA's business is beyond me. Many on this very board wanted to see Jim Tressel strung up by the balls for not telling the NCAA about some kids traiding their own stuff for tattoos, for gods's sake! THE LEADERS AT PeeSU ALLOWED LITTLE BOYS TO GET RAPED FOR YEARS! Where are your morals? They got far less than they deserved....end of story! I ask the same question as above, would we be hearing all this liberal media sneviling if this were OSU? Absolutely not.

The people who allegedly conspired will have their day in court (esp the president), yet you have decided that what you state is absolute FACT.

Perhaps you'll be proven right. What you are failing to do is allow the system to operate, which is a shame.

There are pending criminal charges which CAN devulge further evidence, especially involving one of the alleged conspirators.

Thats significant. What if he is found innocent? What if a different context is provided? What if new evidence is devulged?

You DO NOT know the answer to this even though you act like you know everything.

I don't care if one of these asswipes is found innocent on some technicality or if the glove doesn't fit type of loopholes. It doesn't change the reasons the NCAA levied these sanctions.

banghead huh yeah all cases are the same.

Can you actually articulate why the NCAA levied the decision so quickly? Its not because Jerry Sanducky raped little boys, I can promise you that.

The football team had nothing to do with what happened yet they are the one punished. I believe that is what he was talking about. The actual people who perpetuated the cover up didn't get touched by this NCAA ruling.

The NCAA sanctions changed nothing and didn't punish one person involved. Sandusky is still in prison. Paterno is still dead. Curly and company are still facing possible criminal charges. The kids still got raped. The coaches who aided in it no longer work for PSU. How was this justice and deserved if someone commits a crime and you punish someone else for it?

Where did I ever say it's because Sandusky raped little boys???? I know it's not and that's why I am not worried about the NCAA levying sanctions for any crimes that are committed like some of you are.

I posted the exact reason that the NCAA gave on its website. Go find it yourself. Maybe you need to go read that so you know why the NCAA levied the decision so quickly.

They acted with impunity against the institution without a hearing based off a report.

Penn State didn't rape any kids, Jerry Sandusky did. BUT, they did turn the other way when they were told about it.

The question is can you attempt to destroy a football program when they essentially violated a societal moral duty and the president of the school legally failed to report without full due process?

No one wants to hear this, but its a valid question.

I dont know the answer, but would have liked to seen the results from the criminal case(s) first, not simply the Sandusky trial.

    Good post. Agreed.

    Definitely.

Things have changed around here. Not that it matters because it sure as hell doesn't.....one thing I find hilarious is getting a down vote on your opinion....on top of which there is not one single response or rebuttal to your points. Just a down vote. Like that is what really matters.

The only thing that comes to mind is that this is now a site filled with a ton of very very immature posters.

There's about a dozen or so.....of good, open-minded posters.....who I know and recognize from the old Bucknuts.

Never let a few facts make you actually have to think about something from a realistic point of view....

Chuck's points are spot on. He gets downvoted and little to no one offers any kind rebuttal.

Seriously...the damage done by Sandusky is so far beyond severe....the NCAA could have done absolutely nothing at all.....and this once proud institution would still be in big time trouble from a national perception stand-point.

Recruiting alone.....is and will take a hit without the scholarship reductions....and even though it's not anyone's fault other than Sandusky and those who failed to act accordingly ...kids are still not going to be over-enthused about attending this school.

  • What's going on Chu and Bear?? We are simply having a discussion. Why all the doom and gloom with the type of posters who are on the board? It's a nice, healthy discussion. I haven't seen too much name calling or anything.

I am going at it with a couple posters but still respect chuck and turd and anyone else I am disagreeing with. I respect their opinions, I listen and if I do not agree I tell them why. Come football season I will have no problem cheering on my buckeyes with these guys.

I do agree with the stupid down votes just for disagreeing with someone is weak, but hey to each their own I guess.

You mean the part that I do not believe that the NCAA is going to start running around like some Nazi organization punishing people for whatever reason they want to by throwing it under the ethical clause?

Yes, that seems to be the crux of the disconnect. I do not believe that will happen and I do not believe it's happening in this case.

I believe the cover up was to protect the football $$, Joe's record, the whole success with honor propaganda, the name PSU so as they could keep getting recruits and that it was done so by 4 men 2 of which were directly related to football in their HC and the AD. That is why I believe the NCAA had all the right in world to be involved.

I was just thinking yesterday that no one had really compared this to or mentioned tOSU--mostly USC. Now Mouseburger has to open his big mouth. What about the "coverups" of the athletes who didn't get punished. They probably should have or would have missed games if JoPa didn't "cover up" for them and give them different punishments. If JoePa would cover up this kind of crap, he would cover up anything and make sure his "boys" had an edge. I agree that Penn State doesn't want anymore investigating because they might have found out a lot more.
