Buckeye Football Tailgating Question

  • Question for all of you that go to OSU home games and tailgate. What are the rules when it comes to drinking while tailgating?

    Monty_G

  • You can't have cans, bottles, cases , etc.... out in the open. Pretty much if you have it in a cup and you aren't acting like an ass there won't be a problem.

    Just from my experience.

  • Is that actually the Law, or just like campus rules, or unwritten law type stuff?

I believe it is a law...."open container". It's the silliest law out there but it is what it is.

RED SOLO cup is your best friend. Pour your beer or other beverage of choice into the red solo cup and your cool. Dont leave bottles of booze out in the open or beer.... or the Alcohol Nazis (cops) will give you a $100+ ticket plus have you pour it out. When you pour it into the cup...don't do it out in the open either.

  • Awesome fellas, I appreiciate the input!! As always, Go Bucks!!!

    Monty_G

  • They're really chill about it as long as your chill about it. Like the others said: solo cups are your friend.

Oh yeah, and don't act like an ass.

    Yeah, I said it.

yeah the cops are really cool about it for the most part.......I have been to three games there......02 michigan game ( that is the game why a lot of the policies are in place now, I saw people dragging kegs around, great game that was)......06 penn state and then kent state a few years ago. Keep it in a cup and enjoy yourself without causing any issues and you are fine. The cops that are up closer to the stadium basically tell you if you are walking with your cup "if thats alcohol, finish it or throw it out"

Good Deal! I'm going to only my second Spring Game ever, so, I'm pretty inexperianced when it comes to tailgating at football games! Thanks again all ya'll for the input!! I'm ready to have some cold ones, and go watch how the Bucks have come along this year!!!

  • DO NOT let them see you pouring your drink into your RED SOLO CUP! DO NOT! They will ticket you! Have your head on a swivel when pouring or do it in your vehicle or out of site. Trust me. I've seen two people get busted and one I tried to save by pushing him in the RV as they were coming; he hesitated and one of the "pigs" came up and grabbed him off the RV steps and ticketed him.

  • This might be going to extremes but I wash out a few pop cans put them in the cooler and pour from one can to the other but like one post said do not let them see you do that.

  • I don't drink but I have seen many a guy walking to the tailgating areas with 12 packs under their arm. With the canopies and tents all around where the heck do the police think people are pouring their brewskis? And how can you hide that? They should have a designated drinking area of maybe 10 feet from your host vehicle to drink at will as long as you are not in a designated roadway. Maybe that makes too much sense and pretty soon everyone will have to drink under a blanket or tarp! lol.

I agree to an extent! Maybe have it be "OK" to drink openly in certain desiganted areas. But have a very short leash on it too!!! As in, the instant someone acts a fool, ticket them or worse yet cuff 'em!! They could have like a Beer Garden, like at some festival's and parks and what not!

  • If you're on state owned land it is a mindemeanor with a $50 fee....I got busted for it a few years ago at a PSU game

    AZ Buckeye

  • I usually go to the game on a converted airport transit bus. They ripped out the luggage racks and replaced them with a pisser and a nice oak bar with a tap. If we have people visit from the area, we have them get on the bus to pour. Two years ago, someone placed a 12 pack container on the steps to the bus and the cops walked by and told us to move it out of sight.

Like I said, for the most part if you are not acting like an ass or the beer is in broad daylight the cops will at least give you a warning first.

That is just from my experience.

  • This is a reason why we loved going on the road for games where they don't bother you! For example at MSU we walked up to the Stadium Gate before having to drink what was left and throw it in the trash can right there by the gate entrance to Spartan Stadium. Ohio State has gone overboard and it SUCKS!

  • RED SOLO CUP....lets have a party. A great new song by Jackson and the unofficial rules of tailgating. By the way, since I can't be there..post your pictures with your Red Solo Cup after spring game. Would love to see a great fan cam before and after the game.
