Cal game can be a big surprise for us!!!!!

  • .... I also don't feel that our offense is going to be as prolific as some seem to think.

Ask some Florida fans...and you'll find that they were frustrated with their offense quite a bit.

Against middle tier and lessor teams yes...it will. But against good defenses the spread doesn't really offer you the versatility of a pro offense.

That's why I'm really hoping Urban mixes it up a bit...if we run the ball from the shot gun all the time....you can say goodbye to any Heisman hopefull running back or 1,000 yard rushers. It's just a fact. Handing the ball off from the shotgun takes too long to develop and doesn't give the RB a full head of steam towards the line of scrimmage. It also eliminates a lot of play action fakes.

  • The offense isn't exactly something new for the buckeye kids. A lot of them ran it in high school. The passing schemes are what they are having to learn but the running game isn't much different from what Miller and some guys ran in high school. Lots of schools run a simplified version of Meyers offense. Its why its so successfull because its easy to teach and learn. The concepts aren't hard to get your head around.

I was thinking about the schedule and how many of us have the Bucks going 10-2, 11-1, and even some say 12-0. Then we discuse MSU, UM, Wisky and maybe even PSU being challenges for us. (Maybe). But after listening to other outside commentators, and doing some research, I have come to the conclusion that Cal might give us a huge challenge.

Explain: Even with 3 loses to Oregon the last 3 years, Cal is the only team that actually played Oregon tough and held them under their offensive average. Yes they did lose to Auburn and USC, but watching those Cal games, I was very impressed with their defense. Now OSU seems to have the spread open speed offense that Oregon has, so if Cal has a good enough defense to hold Oregon under their mark, can they do it against OSU. Let's also note that this is the 1st year of this offense, so it's not going to be smooth as it should be, and it will also be earlier in the season, so that might be a factor.

Let me say that we should and will beat Cal, but this might be a surprise to some on here. Just my thoughts.

    Please be kind.

Think you're on to something here Chu, been watching some of Meyers plays on UTube and think it really come down to Braxtons' ability to learn and execute. When Tebow was running it he made great reads and baited defenses. He was patient when he needed to be and made the quick pitch or shovel pass when he had too. If he can be successful the offense will be fine. I think Cal most likely is a top 3 talent wise in the PAC12 so they play well they will be a good test.

I'll say the same thing this year that I said last year.

We go 9-3 this year. Not bad considering how we ended up last season. Last season I thought we'd go 8-4 or 7-5.

I'll be very happy to be wrong.

Ability wise...yes I'd agree with some that this team gaining the experience from last season....has the ability to go undefeated. Especially talent wise and defensively speaking.

But from a realistic standpoint learning a new system will take a little bit of time. Cal could be a big battle but as some have mentioned it is our defense and not our offense that will bring home the victory for us for this one.

Penn State, Wisky, MSU, Cal...and yes, even scUM will be tough games. We have the ability to win them all.

Can't wait for the season to start!

    agree with this guy

    Chu,

I agree and early in the year I can see some bumps in and on the road like MSU and Wisky. Wisky will be fired up due to Urban stealing Kyle D. MSU's defense will be stacked. Finally Cal will be a big time challenge.

It's not a joke, it's f*cking pathetic. Most who know me on here, know that I have never been a person to target another poster. Even TZ, buck 69 (from the old days), matti, and all the rest of the people who people have attacked. They had a different opinion but it was their opinion and you can agree or disagree. I have had heated discussions many times on here.

But this is the lowest of all. People with special needs, or have conditions in no laughing stock. At 1st it was a joke and people started to cherish the humor, then found out that it's all a lie, and he continues to do it.

This is a reason many people who have been on here don't come back. I'm on that line right now. It's awesome to open this website, and see 3yrds articles, or the incite of Iowa. The great humor by chad, heated debates with jwm. The brute words of Nasty (just kidding Nasty). I understand things change, it happens in life, new people come and old ones leave. We welcome the new posters on here to get a new opinion added onto the boards. But when someone comes on here acting like a retard, and thinks it's funny, and others praising him for acting that way- it's gone way to far people.

You have other schools fans on here (USC dentist, wolverine mike, etc) who are great posters and have great opinions towards OSU and their schools. Then you have trolls who come on here to stir crap up -but usually at the end we know who they are and ignore them - simple.

If Buckeyegirl was still on here, she would tear this guy a new a-hole. This is disrespectful and should not be tolerated on here.

    I agree.

You present some sound observations--esp about this newly installed offense. I don't take Meyer's comments as a smokescreen when he says that the players on offense still have a ways to go. And the season kicks off in just three months.

The thing though that'll work to our advantage against Cal is that the game will be here. They're travelling well over 2,000 miles for the trip. And the fact that they're unfamiliar with our style of play.
With Oregon and other Pac-12 schools, they're quite familiar. I liken it to how Purdue has beaten us twice over the past four years and how we barely beat them here in '08 when we scored zero offensive TDs. Perhaps it's just a matchup dilemma.

Truth is we shouldn't sleep on Cal or any Pac-12 school. Here's the astonishing aspect to all of this: we haven't played Cal in 40 years!!! From 1920-'72 we played them about six times including in a couple of Rose Bowl games. This is a BCS school from California and we need to put on a great showing against them. As we should against the likes of USC and UCLA as well. I relish EVERY opportunity to beat down a California school just as a I do one from the SEC or the south in general. I see this as being more important than beating Michigan.

Nonetheless your point is well taken and Buckeye Nation and this team should take heed to it.

  • One point that should be made about Cal is that they had a solid recruiting class the past year or so.
Notice the number of commits they landed at the Army All American game back in January.

  • I respect Tedford as a very good coach and one that is most certainly not conservative. I respect that Cal has some good talent. All that being said I do not believe that they can beat us this year in Columbus but of course we can always beat ourselves. I believe our depth will be better and that the Silver Bullets will give us a decisive edge. All that being said I will be surprised to see us take a three TD victory and see it more as a 10 point game. I agree that Conference wins take precident over non-conference ones but a win over tOSU buys a lot of respectability that can later play a role in bowl selections.

Tedford not conservative? The guy turtles up when things are tough and his team plays the same way. Should OSU lose to Cal, Urban, will have some splainin' to do.

One more thing, since the buckeyes are not bowl eligible, beating your team does not carry the same weight as you might think. Your team will not appear in the Coaches or BCS polls when they come out. Welcome to the year of anonymity...unless 46 turns into 47, 48, 49, etc,....
