Coaching rumor from article in Canton OH newspaper(Gruden)

  • while either would be great, I would prefer Meyer. However, at this time this is ALL ONLY speculation. Lets just try to enjoy the rest of this season and we will see who surfaces in December. Go Bucks!

Agreed. I don't understand the love fest with Gruden. If Gruden would get the job, I am afraid that we would find ourselves looking for another coach in five years ... he doesn't seem like a coach who would be content to stay in one place for very long. i could see him bolting for the NFL [again] as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

Frankly, I am not a big Meyer fan, however, after yesterday ... I am quickly becoming one!

And how many years do you think Meyer would last and where would he find another Timmy?

"Enjoy the rest of the season"?

With all due respect, I find speculating about our coach much more enjoyable.

  • I started hearing Gruden name everywhere right after he started doing ESPN MNF. He did that because he was fired. Never did much in pros, won with SB with DUngies players then team fell apart. But since he sounds intelligent on MNF analysis, people think he is a good coach. He would be a bad hire.

He also helped in the Raiders re-building process when they went to the Superbowl (remember?) and coached for one of the worst owners in football in Tampa.

There are a couple other coaches who were much worse in the NFL than the superbowl winning Gruden; their names are Saban and Carrol...but they weren't/aren't good college coaches, are they?

You're talking about an NFL caliber coach (and please don't ever say the Tressel is even close to that caliber), and you dismiss him like they grow on trees.

    Some of you are insane.

  • Yes, I agree. Great post and rundown on recruiting by Iowabuckeye.

  • I love this people that say that because Gruden won with other players he wont be a success in the college ranks. Pete Carrol had a 33-31 record in the NFL. He was fired by the Jets after 1 year and Pats after 3 years. When he was hired at USC, people thought it was a bad hire. He then went on to produce one of the greatest 9 year runs in college football. His second to last year, he had not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 5 star recruits in the backfield. Gruden who has won a Superbowl and is known as a QB guru, would be magic for OSU. He could fill the entire roster with 4/5 start recruits. What QB would not want to play for Gruden knowing that his brother is a OC and Gruden himself would prepare them for the NFL. It is a longshot for him to come to OSU, but I truly believe the OSU brass should be doing everything possible to try to get him here. Sending daily boxes of buckeyes, daily short sleeved shirts/tie/black wool hat with block O and most importantly a contract for the highest paid coach in the country. If OSU lands Gruden, they will win at least 1 National Championship under him.

"Big time college football programs simply cannot do well without great recruiting?" I'm hoping I misunderstood the rationale behind that declaration. Did you mean you can't get good recruits without good coaches and that's why kids are staying away from OSU in droves? A coach is like a chef and great chefs can make incredible meals even with ordinary ingredients. To wit, here are OSU's and Wisconsin's offenses yesterday by position and # of Stars (per Scout):

    Ohio State......................Wisconsin TE Stoneburner (4).............Pederson (2) T Shugarts (5)..................Oglesby (5) G Mewhort (4)...................Zeitler (3) C Brewster (5)...................Konz (3) G Linsley (4).....................Frederick (2) T Norwell (5) *...................Wagner (0)--played TE in HS; not found on Scout or Rivals WR Reed (3) *.......................Abbrederis (0)--not found on Scout or Rivals WR D. Smith (4)....................Toon (3) QB Miller (5).........................Wilson (2) RB Hyde (4).........................White (3) RB Hall (3)*..........................Ball (3) * Posey (5), Adams (5), Herron (4)

Which line-up would you rather have on the field right now wearing scarlet and grey? The one that barely missed being shutout against Michigan State for the first time in God-knows-how-long or the one that tagged Nebraska for 48? At only two positions--tackle and RB--do the Badgers even match us. On paper, we win hands down. But football, as we all know, isn't played on paper. But even if we had Wisconsin's lineup, would Bollman & Siciliano still find a way to screw it up? And isn't that the point? A great meal starts with the chef, not the ingredients. Bollman & Siciliano would somehow find a way to burn water. How is it Wisconsin consistently does more with less while we're doing less with more? Bielema personally disgusts me but the man sure as hell seems to know how to coach.

Where in my post did I say great recruiting = how many stars are behind your name via some recruiting service.

And...you conveniently leave off the list who our real players and coach should be that were recruited and payed to participate this year. Put Pryor, Herron, Adams, and Thomas on that list and with Tressel coaching and I'll take my chances with Ohio State any day.

Great recruiting = going after and getting the players you want that fit your system. Wisconsin goes and gets who THEY want..and those players sign with them because they are a great program with great coaching.

You simply cannot win without great recruiting. Ask Indiana.
