Not if they act like fools about it.
I can't help it if 76% of the people they polled were dooche bags. It's stupid and we're being mocked. We already suck as a conference we don't need any help with sophomoric self serving names.
BTW...our "legend" was embroiled in a pedophilia scandal and the "leader" made front line news over losing it's coach a while back. Delany needs to cut the shit and get with the program.
Rutgers and MD can both blow air on my backside.
And yes...I'm foul this morning
No deal on the sig bet, I'm not wagering on what that asshole Delany will do, nothing he does makes any sense (except money grubbing) and I'll not applaud anything he does anymore. He's lost on me, I just wish he'd go away, he's already caused enough damage.
I heard this as well. That would at least preserve the last regular season game for the showdown. If we stay in different divisions, I see the game getting moved to much earlier in the year in the very near future.
So Bear and Indy and those of you who still dislike the conference division names...what do you suggest we name the divisions?
And for the poster who notified us that people in the Northeast were making fun of the B1G, I ask who in the Northeast is in a position to make fun of any collegiate sports in the Midwest? They used to play serious basketball in the NE but now the B1G has passed them up there too.
Hear, hear! The folks in the NE have nothing to complain about with the B1G.
I used to play H-O-R-S-E when I was a kid...same thing?
when the NFL realligned several years ago they did it on a geographical basis, while at the same time respecting the histroical rivalries (eg Dallas vs. Washington or NY Giants, or Phil). This is how Dallas ended up in the NFC East. I recall only one or two teams switched conferences. Overall, the NLF did a masterful job and they should have been used as a model for "how to" realign and expand.
Instead, under Delany's poor leadership, the BIG gets mired in petty politics and completely drops the ball with this stupid leaders & legends gimmick. Worse than the names is the fact that historical rivals and the conferences two flagship programs were put in different divisions. It is still hard to believe the BIG would have been this foolish and lack the foresight to have avoided a potential back-to-back scenario.
With the added insult of Maryland and Rutgers, here is the way this needs to be realigned.
East - Maryland, Rutgers, TOSU, Penn St., Mich, Mich St, & Indiana
West - Wisc, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, NW, Purdue, & Minnesota
When the 15th & 16th teams are added, you will only need to switch out either Indiana or Purdue.
Again, borrowing from the NFL, they need to adopt some form of scheduling where the teams that finished in the top part of their respective divisions play eachother the next season; eg 1st place from the East hosts 1st place from the West and travels to 2nd place from the West.
The idea of any type of reasonable rotation has been lost. Playing Nebraska once every 6 years or something just doesn't work. With this many teams, you need to figure out how to improve competition between the divisions, while making sure to enhance or create rivalries within them.
Boy, you really are in a bad mood. Worse than usual, anyway.
And H-O-R-S-E is to basketball as foosball is to soccer.
Is that a simile or.the.other one
By all the blog griping its hard to believe 57% of the B1G's poll didn't mind the names. I'm more concerned with division/bowl realignments & Midwest domes getting included into the playoff rotation concerning the B1G's future.
Also... In terms of facing the future I feel the strength of schedule & weak league arguments are over rated. Its just hard for me to believe an undefeated or 1 loss buckeye team will get passed over in any 4 or 8 team playoff unless Acc, Big East or BCS buster teams are undefeated.
Sure my thoughts may seem elitish but #1 in bcs bowl appearances & a traveling fan base known for buying up big game tickets certainly will deservingly hold its weight when the big dogs are in their meetings rubbing elbows.
Til then.. May UM continue his pursuit of top notch talent & I hate to admit this... over sign B1G style(maybe I should say thin the hurd for better depth) because like JT said you need depth & luck when pursuing that crystal ball.
I completely get it Iowa.
But I think they really failed in regards to being patient ..... almost a year old could mean 7-9 months...which in the grand scheme of time....is just a mere rain drop! I appreciate the (so they claimed) because truthfully I think this was stated by the B1G as an order of back pedaling due to the negativity and backlash they received from their decision.
Plus...things are much different now. These men most importantly including Delaney...are much like the republican party..... old, white, rich as hell and completely out of touch with the modern world! Now I'm neither a democrat nor am I a republican...I've lost faith in our political system long ago. Now I know I'm stereo typing.....but it's largely based on observation at this point. Delaney reminds me of a more sinister real-life Mr. Burns from 'The Simpsons'
But digressing.....Leaders and Legends would have actually been cutting edge and forward thinking 25+ years ago. But definitely not in this day and age.
IMO simple is better.
You don't see the NFL trying to get creative with their division names.
If you want to get down to the bare bones of it....and be creative in naming divisions then I suggest doing something like the NHL has done in naming their divisions. Like Norris and Smythe. Named after John Norris and Conn Smythe.
If Delaney and his group of out of touch senior citizens wanted to really stick to the lines of having meaning in a legend and a leader.....then they should pick two great historic men who were exemplary legends and leaders like Lincoln and Taft or insert whatever historic leader and legend you wanted to chose from who was either affiliated with the region in which we play or the B1G Ten conference. Doesn't have to be Bo or Woody as I don't think that would be fair for teams from the rest of the conference....it could be anyone who stood out from the mid-west that was a tremendous human being....I'm just putting this out there......that is all. Not saying this is what I want....but I think it would hit a more accurate mark of what Delaney claims he's trying to do....let's say Lincoln division and Van Buren or maybe the Wright division and the Ford division.
For me....east/west or north/south make the most sense. I too feel that the divisions should be split up geographically and not split up in what they feel will be "competitive" because you can't force how competitive teams will be. That's up to them.
East / West to me...considering how our geography is laid out...makes the most sense. Or Lakes and Plains if you wanted to do something different....but it's still an accurate portrayal of our geographic layout.
With Nebraska, Wisconsin in the west.....I'm not worried about the conference being competitive. Iowa and Illinois both are up and down and Nortwestern has really turned it up a notch and Minnesota is doing it's best to get there too.
In the East it's tOSU, scUM and Penn State. MSU has been solid.....I think it would even out pretty well actually.
That's just my take.
I don't like basketball that much and therefore I don't watch it.
That's the B1G's approach to these names: give them 25 years and they'll be commonplace, just another part of our everyday lives and lexicon.
So while they didn't do it 25 years ago, at least in 23 more years, they'll be able to say that they did.
The NHL got rid of those names back in 1993. Now, everything's got a "compass bearing directional name:"
• Eastern Conference: Atlantic Division (formerly Patrick), Northeast Division (formerly Adams), Southeast Division (formed in 1998 due to expansion)
• Western Conference: Central Division (formerly Norris), Pacific Division (formerly Smythe), Northwest Division (also formerly Smythe)
I love Lakes and Plains but they'll want something that suits everyone, including the FNGs. That means East and West is the next logical option, which is why they would go with them. Delany said he wants something unique. So they'll do another survey and find Leaders and Legends are even more entrenched in people's minds than ever.
And that's why, as much as I don't like them, I think the B1G will stick with them.
You're probably right.
I still like the NHL's division names though....they make sense. I just used Norris and Smythe as examples as being named after someone of significance and meaning. Delaney and co. could have done the same thing for the B1G.
The reason I know about the NHL names isn't because I'm an NHL fan but because I had the same idea you did and looked them up.
I was thinking they could name one division after the Big 10's very first commissioner, John Griffith, and the other after Wayne Duke, the Big 10's commissioner prior to Delany...they would be impartial names showing no allegiance to any particular schools other than the original 10 plus it would be funny as hell to put Maryland in the Duke Division!
