Couldn't agree more.
You got my upvote simply for the Purdue comment. Wish Hazell the best, great guy, wish we still had him at tOSU.
Correct me if I'm wrong....
Didn't we have Dunn at the beginning, CARLOAD Hyde and Rod Smith getting hand offs?
Urban Meyer had nothing like that at Florida. Nothing. He had to utilize the hybrid type because they weren't recruiting true RB's. Meyer likes having the staple of RB's that he currently has.
While at Florida....he even tried bringing in that USC transfer so he could have an every down back.
Tebow was the primary RB in that offense so that's why Harvin was utilized that way.
As a bold prediction....
I think we are going to see a $hit ton of the pistol formation this year.....
Miller will be 2 to 3 yards behind center with either Hyde, Smith or Elliott directly behind him....maybe even 2 of them!
...and I agree with the poster who said we'd have a lot of empty backfield formations as well.
I could see 5 WR sets with Wilson, Clark, Smith, Marshall and Brown/Fields.......or an empty backfield with double tight ends with your choice of Smith, Wilson, Marshall, Fields, Brown, Clark lined up either trips right or left!
It's like ordering off a very nice menu!! Take your pick.....of coarse I'm getting ahead of myself with the true freshman who have never played a down of college football yet.....but if they can play Meyer will play them!
That was me and yeah I can see so many empty back options with Jet sweeps, Screens, Designed QB Draw. Having some of the RB lined up as WR. Have a trick pass with Marshall as a WR lined up behind the line. Skies the limit with this offense or I should 100 is the goal.
We return no less that 7 kick offs and or punts for a TD.
We have a 1000 yard rusher and 1000 yard receiver.
Mike Mitchell will be a starter in the middle by the 3rd game.
Defense will get 30+ sacks and 12+ interceptions.
My only concern with all the empty back sets with the bubble screens, QB Draws and the like is that it won't show any progress from Braxton as a QB and ultimately that is why he went out to see Whitfield Jr. and has eyes on the NFL. If he wants to be taken serious as a QB and has desires of becoming a top flight QB, he has to prove he can throw touch passes, out passes and more traditional routes. Everyone knows he can run, but if he is to fulfill his development he can't keep doing the same stuff as in the past. He has to expand. I would look for more traditional sets when the game is out of reach to get Braxton more familiar and comfortable as a pocket QB. Look at Troy Smith's development, in the beginning he was a dual threat, by the time he won the Heisman he was a more polished pocket passer who could run when needed but it wasn't his first option. Miller needs to mold himself more in that mindset.
I agree with you on that 100%. I want to see more of a traditional drop back progression with Braxton as well. I only am saying that the Jet sweeps, bubble screens because that’s what some of the young WR will do early on. I know there is some upper classmen at WR but to get the young guys early on in plays will have a lot of the small screens and have them use their speed. I hope there will be some deep plays with it as well but the short plays will help open up those deep plays as well.
Fu_k the trickery/gimmicky bull$hit!!
This is The Ohio State University for crying out loud.....leave that crap for the Boise's, TCU's and Oregon's of the world!!
Alabama's won 3 National Championships and they flat out just hammer it down the throat! They say 'this is what we're doing and stop us if you're good enough' and they do that EXTREMELY well!!
Would love to see Urban's unique power spread offense just flat out cram the ball down the opposing teams throats literally.....
We don't need jet sweeps, reverses and the like to do it either. Typically those plays don't do much against elite competition anyway.....Alabama would snuff those out in a heartbeat!
We did run a ton of empty backfield sets in 2006....so if we did that it would be great and it would mean that Braxton is developing as a passer....but we should be either PASSING THE BALL out of those formations or Braxton should be taking off if nothing is open....the LAST thing you want to do is run a sweep with an empty backfield.
Would love to see some great play action fakes out of the pistol as well.....with Hyde or which ever back you chose....with twins right or left or even trips.
Like many have mentioned...the options are limitless.....but we don't need to be tricky or gimmicky.
We have the talent now.....just try and stop us. We dare you.
As a general rule I do not like to rag on players prefering to let them prove themselves on the field or not. However in this case I will predict that if Hall does indeed lead the Buckeyes in rushing the team will have a disappointing season. Hall is in my opinion one of the most over hyped players OSU has had in many years. In my view the fact that he has seen the field at all says more about the lack of depth at RB in Columbus then anything else. If OSU does not have several players move ahead of him on the depth chart this season then their recent recruiting at running back has been a failure. He is going to have to show me something that I have yet to see out of him before I think differently and at this point in his career I have doubts that will happen.
if braxton throws for 0 tds, rushes for 40 and we win every game i can careless what offense we run. ill never fully understand why people care so much about how its done, just win.
i dont get why we need to run more traditional plays when that clearly isnt the best for our offense or our qb. actually im going to tell you right now there is a 0% chance we run more traditional sets since that's not what our head coach does.
hall's not playing running back and even if he did it's pretty much clear that hyde is the 1a 1b and 1c option there
Brax goes for 2k in the air and 1k on the ground. Hyde joins him in the 1k club and our tightends combine for 10 tds. We win the Big 10 and play A&M for the National Championship. Our defense destroys Johnny Football. The defensive play during the NC game is the difference and Fick is rewarded with a head coaching job in the MAC.
oh and I win a grand on a scratch off lottery ticket.
sadly, brax wont win the heismann (wont get hurt either), because his surrounding cast does very, very well (hall, hyde, smith etc..)
he wont need to scramble for long runs so his numbers will drop, but because of the other guys and a healthy brax we easily go 13-0 beating brasky in the ccg...
finally, we end the sec reign of n/c's by beating bama in the big one!
oh, and shazier wins the butkus!
