Can the new coach rescind an athletic scholarship on a player?

  • Can the new OSU coach or any coach rescind an athletic scholarship on a player he did not recruit? Is it still a binding agreement in the athletic scholarship? Is the athletic scholarahip renewed annually or is it for the four year term? For example, let's say Fickell recruited a three star wide receiver out of high school to play Ohio State football. After an indeterminate amount of time, a new coach comes into the fold and gets more highly touted and skilled receiver than the previous coach's wide receiver pick. Is it possible to rescind or is it a binding contract unable to be terminated except for just cause? I am just curious.

How about the db's who cannot catch and the lb's who cannot run and the O linemen who can't maintain a block for more than .5 seconds or the rb's who fumble all the time? We knew long ago we had a wr who could not catch, but most importantly how about the coaches who cannot and do not coach! Once again, Fickell looked like he had no idea what was going on. This is comical!

  • Until the player signs the dotted line on signing day, a new coach can pull the scholarship. I saw where the qb from Massillon, had a scholly offer from harbaugh, but the new coach pulled it and said he has to re-earn it

  • Of course. Scholarships are only 1 year contracts anyways. A new coach (or the old one for that matter) can take away a scholarship at any point during the four years because it's only a 1 year agreement. Signing day is the day that recruits actually sign the commitment for the following year, up to this point it's just verbal commitments. A player or coach could change up to signing day. And then, even if the player signs, he's only guaranteed that scholarship for his first year.

  • One year agreements. See the SEC

Which 3 star wide receiver are you referring to?

    Lewis?

Based on the way Meyer quit on Florida twice in 13 months it wouldn't be wise for him to come in and send Ohio recruits who have stuck with the program since the shitstorm began packing. With the connections Hoke is building with Ohio coaches Meyer doesn't want to do anything to further strengthen that connection.

I think Meyer or whoever will allow all committed players, plus those he obtains, to come into the program.

If players are not asked back it will probably be the upperclassmen who have not done shit and who expected to be handed Ws and championships at OSU without working hard or without working as a team.

interesting how you get a shot in against meyer by sating he quit on his team 2x in 13 months. then i read posts of yours about we need to support fickell, he's our coach--rightfully so.

so in a couple months you will be supporting this new coach in meyer who you are currently getting digs on? that's funny.

and there are many more of you who have talked about the "crappy" 8-4 year his last year there and losing to michigan and players getting arrested and quitting on team. yet you will all be cheering for him and showing him the respect he deserves because "hey, he's our coach he deserves our support".

    ironic

    You missed my point.

He came back in 2010 to keep the 2010 recruiting class together and then quit again.

That is part of his track record now. I am sure Hoke will use that against him " Well you know Urban won 2 NCs, BUT he had to retire twice at Florida due to health problems, burnout, family issues, etc... Will he be at OSU for 5 years while your there?:"

My point is when Hoke is building a strong relationship with Ohio coaches you don't come in and burn more bridges to help that relationship grow stronger. Cutting committed recruits because "they are not good enough," particularly those from Ohio would certainly help Hoke's cause in the state of Ohio.

Again, if players are cut lose it will most likely be upperclassmen who are deadweight due to not working / leading as hard as they could have.

As far as me taking "digs" at Meyer there will be a lot of OSU fans slurping on Meyer who used to mock him several times a year when he was at Florida.
