Not sure if this is good news or bad.
Urb is just trying to find a position that fits his skill-set...but the lb position isn't that much of a need when you run a base 4-2-5
Not a fan of the 4-2-5. In fact it's a cop out IMHO. A cop out because Fickell is inept at getting the best out of the bevy of 4 and 5-star LBers we have on this roster. And we've been in this base for the past five seasons now.
The ideal scenario would be for us to switch to a 3-4.
Because at about 6'2," 235, there's no way he should be playing at DE at a major D-I powerhouse program such as this. That's fine for YSU, the MAC, Sun Belt or D-III levels but not here. If we could ever switch to a 3-4, then Marcus could potentially succeed as an OLB.
And what about Tyquan Lewis who's about the same size and already on campus? Do we use him there as well?
Good post. I am glad someone else is not wearing rose colored glasses when it comes to poor coaching by some of our staff. Let's see if it changes this year since Urban had a season of his own to suffer through it. It is really hard to say 12-0 is suffering, but the "d" needs to improve if we plan to beat a top SEC team in January. The corners and especially the safeties need basic skills that were rarely demonstrated last year, as well.
Our offense should be great, but it will not mean much if we continue to play out of position and "bump" them down.
My fear is that he won't be able to crack the lineup and he ends up going the route of Se'Von Pittman and transferring. I think he is a Special Teams stud and as this is Urban's baby, it would be an extreme hit to tha unit. Hopefully, he gets a crack and fulfills the rumors about his freakish athleticism and succeeds at OSU.
Agree with much said, but will add, if this is the case than perhaps Grant is projecting to finally contribute, other wise why move LB to DL when LB appears a need?
so it was a cop out when we moved bobby carpenter to a down defensive end and only used hawk and schlagel back in 05? maybe curtis grant is a ginormous bust and not fickel's fault, and this is coming from a non fickel defender.
I don't care for the 4-2-5 either. I like either the 4-3-4 or 3-4-4 better. Put your nickel and dime packages on the field when needed. Our DB's the past few years have not shown the ability to tackle well enough to have 5 DB's on the field in your base defense. It also in my opinion adversely affects the amount of pressure you can get on the QB. Name another elite program that runs a 4-2-5 as their base? I don't believe there are many that run that.
I guess in the eyes of many Urban Meyer is a first class fool. He doesn't know his assistant coaches are incompetent, he doesn't have a clue were players are the best fit and he doesn't know what defensive formations to use. He must be on the verge of being fired any day now.
I haven’t heard or read much on how practices are going but could this be a result of the linebackers play? Johnson, Lee, Mitchell, Worley are playing better than thought this early on. Give another athletic Down linemen to rush the QB.
Sounds like a good move to get him on the field.
I don't understand why Marcus didn't get a chance to play linebacker last season. He played well on special teams, which shows he can run, get off blocks and tackle. The move to DE makes even less sense.
JMO, Urban wants to rotate two deep on the DL. He always has. Keeps the big boys fresh.
I like the move. Kid is quick and that's what the defense needs to win a nc.
Normally the only reason you are going to be moved from LB to DE is that you just are not quick at picking up the reads needed to play LB or that you just cannot cover a receiver. Forget about size some people are just better playing with their hand in the dirt. They do not have to think as much and can play much faster on the field. Playing linebacker in the Buckeye defense takes much more than great athletic ability you also have to know your assignments and instinctual in your reactions.
This just stacks an already beastly defensive line even more
Kid will be in the 2 deep in the DLINE and will blow bye tired, fat, out of shape big 10 OLINEMEN......he is going to be scary good.....I Promise
So why not give Marcus a chance at linebacker? Again, he played well in the open field on special teams, showing that the "assigments" and "instincts" balance appears to be in place and something that could be built on with good coaching.
Agree with assumption that Grant may finally be performing at LB. Rumors last fall were moving Grant to DE because of defensive read problems. If he is now starting at MLB then getting Marcus on the field is a logical move into two deep at DE...especially with Pittman leaving.
Marcus has talent, so he could be good at a lot of places.
My shock is that you guys are permanently moving to the 4-2-5....that is...surprising.
i wouldnt say that's true. most teams play spread now so we play that, this has been the case since 2008. against power teams they'll play the 4/3 3/4 hybrid they have been playing
I'd say Urban is trying to get the best 11 on the field. Although I should say best 17 or 18 to play as Marcus we play in substitution roles at that position I'd believe. Scary though I thought we were much thinner at LB.
So its really a 4/3 hybrid? That makes more sense to me.
Going away from something like the 4/3 or 3/4 makes little sense in the Big 10.
i mean i think it is. noah spence essentially started last year and he maybe had his hand in the ground 20% of the time. in my mind he's a stand up d-end which is essentially an outside linebacker. much like how bobby carpenter was. he was a mix between an olb and defensive end
I love the move of Marcus to LEO! He is a fierce pass rusher. On sure passing downs I could see Washington
moving inside and Fickel bringing in Marcus to rush the passer. To have Spence on one end and Marcus on the
other end will give us the speed off the edge that Urban loves.
Can't wait to see a line-up with these guys on passing downs:
Relax. Tress new what he was doing. Urbs knows what he is doing. Sit back, relax, and let things unfold. Those two are a couple of combined championships away from having to put rings on their feet.

We have had some really great ST players that were not able to make the reads necessary to play lb. I do not understand your equating how being a good special teams player translates over to having the ability to make your reads at the linebacker position. Most good ST players are fast and willing to give up their body to make a play or eat up blockers. Sabino was a great ST player and had problems being in the right place on the field when playing linebacker. Plus I am pretty sure that Marcus spent most of his high school playing time as a down lineman. Very hard to make the transition from a lineman to a linebacker. Much easier for a linebacker who grows to end up playing the de position.
