I think its great news. If you got the opportunity to bring in coaches/consultants/recruiting coordinators/etc, then do it. Especially someone like Heacock.
To have a former DC hired on as a consultant is only a good thing. More experience and more eyes and more opinions. Shoot Saban brings in all sorts of 'consultants' to help his team win multiple NC's
I'm glad he's back to contribute a lil input,,
Obviously they were all catching some heat, and maybe Withers is more defensive about it, but when Urban is yelling at Fick and Vrabel on the sideline during the game, that tells me who's in charge.
As long as we are in a conference playing FatAss opponents and then trying to compete against speed teams in BCS Bowl games anyone is going to have their ups and downs as a DC here. Playing Wiscy (FATTEST TEAM ON EARTH) and then playing a Florida, Oregon, etc. in a Bowl is a tough task. I think Heacock did a nice job but like playing to win games not to lose them. Need to be aggressive.

It says the school pushed Fickel on him and he essentially had to take him.
The school gave Fickel the opportunity of a lifetime in allowing him to act as the head coach and audition himself. He failed and couldn't even gather a legitimate DI offer.
For being the good soldier though, urban hired him, probably at the behest of the AD and school. Urban figured, what the hell, I have a year of probation and probably another before Alabama in the NC. We'll see what he can do.
Well, Fickel, not surprisingly, struggled last year, especially the first half of the season.
Bringing Heacock back is a reinforcement for Fickel. Believing anything else, in my opinion, is foolish.
On a side note, it's a sad testiment to this board that I get a downvote for a critical opinion. I'm used to it, but some of you are freakin babies.
"man we got some fuckin weirdos on this site." - Davebucknut 9/5/13 post of the year
I guess teams aren't allowed to grow together , damn with your mentality ..No Coach should ever have a bad game or season where they have alot of youth .. Heck every team that loses their head coach and has a interim coach must be successful..
Lofty standards if you ask me.. so who is responsible for the Offenses struggles in the 12-0 season.. since the Defense has no excuse ...
Too logical, too obvious, too simple, therefore unacceptable to this board...
Gotcha covered with some upvotes dude. :)
This is THE Ohio State University. You don't "grow" as a coach here, especially after 8 years.
This isn't Kent State- produce or get the hell out.
Appreciated Raz. I know you typically don't agree with me, but I respect your opinion and posts.
Yep np man.
Wow dude, who said anything about coaches... Can you even read.. I said team. Or you don't think teams need to grow .. This is not the NFL..
Gosh you must live in a Utopian society.. wow..
A team is not a reflection of it coaches?
Wow, I'm glad you think paying a dude 800k to be mediocre and 'grow' is fine.
I live in a different reality than you I guess.

So we should win a title every year right ? What are your standards for this football program .. you think we will never lose or have tough games .. where we have to pull out a win ?
A team goes through losing their head coach and a bunch of suspensions ..a whole media frenzy .. What exactly did you expect last year ?
These are human beings we are talking about , real life human beings not video game creations.. some how you seem to forget that ..
So his first 10 years was mediocre , be realist man...
A team that came of 6-7 , they went 12-0 ..sure things weren't perfect. You really think Alabama was perfect last year ( Here comes the whole superior conference Bullshit).
You act like you have never heard the term "growing pains"
Heck some coaches get paid more than 800k to shit the bed.
Both the Offense & the defense had glaring problems ,...Ohhh don't forget special teams.. Should the special teams coach not be allowed "grow"
Funny I guess this is Ohio State so everything should be perfect ..
Players should never get suspended or injured , every 5* or 4* recruit should never be bust , every play call must work - if it doesn't its soft zone/ not aggressive. Coaches should never be fired.
Most importantly these players and coaches are not human beings , and teams should just lay down and take the rumping from the buckeyes.
Heck Freshman & sophmores should come pre-programmed with game plans and schemes, they should never have to learn.
See how ridiculous, you sound..
Btw we should win the next 10 BCS titles , if we don't the Head Coach & His staff sucks also..
Btw the defense had the offenses back for the 2nd part of the season , while the offense seemed to regress.. who's fault is that ? Tom Herman shouldn't be earning his pay check neither..
Did you watch the Wisconsin & the SCUM game ? .. How many touchdowns did the O score in the 2nd half of the SCUM game, after the D forced all those 3 & outs and turnovers..
The Offense shouldn't be allowed to "grow" neither.. (Here comes the Urban doesn't have his playmakers excuse).

Generalities are nice , as is your rainbow-like views.
What you fail to address, until you mention Whisky and SCUM, teo great teams last year by the way
It would be a nice situation for Heacock as he gets to be involved in the OSU team and the defense, without the pressure of coaching and the hassle of recruiting. Kind of a part time retirement position.
Regarding Fickell, there may have been some pressure for Meyer to keep him, and I believe that it was a good thing to do for both team stability and recruiting in 2012. As to whether he will live up to expectations as DC, this is a critical year for him.
To me some of the angst regarding Fickell's ability as a DC is a hangover from his stint as HC. Now while it that was a mediocre performance, there were so many mitigating circumstances that it is difficult to give him sole responsibility for the results.
I see a lot of blame on Fickell for the poor tackling last year, but DC's aren't nearly as responsible for technique as the position coaches and I don't remember complaints of poor form tackling with Fickell in that role.
Although on the conservative side, the right play was often called even at the start of the year. It was poor execution that led to the poor performances. That got better as the year progressed, and with the stability created by Boren at LB, the defense also became more aggressive and effective. How much credit does Fickell get for that?
Ultimately, I don't think that he has done enough to get replaced yet... but this is absolutely a critical season for him. Despite the youth the expectations are high and if the unit fails to perform then fortunately there is a co-defensive coordinator available and ready to step in his place.
Ya, very curious to see where Fick goes from here. He has expressed interest in trying to become a head coach and I am actually pretty curious to see how he does out on his own where he has to hire a full staff and oversee performance & development.
He's going to have to merit his lofty position.
I've never seen a school/or employer go out of their way so much to help a guy succeed.
Never seen fans go out of their way to hate a specific coordinator..heck you would have thought he was a head coach.
Where did Chuck say he hated Fickell?
And Ginn getting hurt 10.3 seconds into the game didn't help either.
OSU has had plenty of Quality Control positions in the past, Marcus Freeman, Keith Uecker, Todd Goebell, Kirk Barton, Jeff Uhlenhake, Ben Needham, (recently hired by Haynes at KSU), Nick Siciliano was at one time, even Fickell was a QC coach at one time,
granted most of the time it is at the start of a coaches career that sees them in that position, but it is far from a new job job title.
it is considered a staff position ie non-coaching
I often noticed something about Heacock from my seat behind the OSU bench during the Tressell years with the great defenses OSU seemed to always have. Often, the opponent would move the ball down the field efficiently and score on the first posession of the game. The OSU defense would come off the field, Heacock would immediately gather them at the the bench with a whiteboard and busily write on the board while confidently giving verbal instruction to the players. It looked like he was clearly in charge, recognized something unexpected that the offense was doing and communicated immediate adjustments. Almost inevitably, the OSU defense would shut down the opponent on the next series and for the rest of the game.
I never understood the criticism of Heacock. To my untrained eye, he always looked like the consummate defensive strategist and calm, veteran coach.
Heacock did a great job and his bend but don't break system fit nicely with Tressel's game management style. So why did some criticize Heacock? Because he had a bend but don't break system that was a part of Tressel's game management style.
Everyone loves big interceptions and sacks, but forget about the risks of an aggressive defense. Just like they love a bombs away offense, but forget about when that comes back to bite them on the behind.
I don't hate Fickel; why would I hate him?
I question, based off the on field results, whether he is the right defensive coordinator for this program.
Questioning ones ability to do a job isn't hating them; that's a very juvenile assessment.
One has nothing to do with the other.
