I get they are the "it" team, getting all the hype, have the Heisman QB, etc...But committing to them when they already had 7 other WR recruits, plus other WR's on roster, doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Yes, I get the whole "I'm gonna compete for that spot" mentality...but 4 or 5 of those won't be on the field possibly for 3/4 years since if they can't beat out the guys they come in with, how they going to beat out the next few classes as well...
Didn't take A&M long to learn the "sign all you can and cut the rest loose" game some of the SEC schools play....
Feel bad for the kids that at this moment truly believe they will get to sign a LOI in a couple weeks....
Most kids are stupid ...
College football can be cold hearted. Several years ago, Texas signed eight or nine DL's in one class. They basically had a two year try out and the players who were good stayed and the ones at the bottom of the depth chart transferred freeing up the scholies for the next class. Same thing with A&M, only the best will survive and the rest will be looking elsewear in a couple of years.
won't be a couple years, they can't admit 35 or 36 right now, so there will have to be some gray shirts, some walk ons, some JUCO casualties etc... Just hope they don't wait until day before signing day and let a kid know that he isn't one of the LOI's they'll be accepting, but they'll take him if he gray shirts....a lot of kids will take that deal since they will have nowhere else to go on that short notice...
most kids look elsewhere when a class has 3 or 4 at there position but geez 7 other wr's before larue commited. although he will be one of the better wr commits they have, some of these other guys are going to have to move to another position
Everything will come back down to earth for A&M next year. They lost their OC and all sec teams have a full season of game tape now. IMO, Johnny football hit his peak way to early.
i agree a&m really over achieved last season and came out of nowhere, this year they will have a target on there back in the sec and teams will learn to contain manziel
They are clearly taking the RichRod plan of recruiting.
I don't get it either. Out of all the offers these kids get, they all choose the team that has the most media hype. Knowing the odds of "making the team" are against them. Seems like a very poor choice.
The aTm campus should have one hell of a flag football league with all the grey shirt and practice squad wrs they will have.
Better he goes there than Michigan.
I agree because I'll be damned if he ties Archie's Heisman mark!
No. Better he goes there than U$C!
you mean like Hoke recruiting 8 or 9 offensive lineman?
Enough of all this BS shenanigans. Here's how you stop all this stuff.
1.) Allow no scholarships to freshman until the 1st week of football practices in the fall.
2.) Once you sign a player to scholarship, that counts towards 85 scholarships for 4-years no matter if he transfers (5-years for red-shirt)
3.) After the 1st week of football allow the coaches to give the remaining 85 scholarships to freshman, or any upper classmen that didn't have a scholarship.
This will prevent kids from getting fooled by oversigners. Very quickly reputations will be built of coaches who are loyal to their players and those who are not. Upper classmen still can be cut, but the only way it will help the team is if they were a bad influence on other players.
This will also bring the focus back to going to college for an education, not to play football. The Freshman will have a reality check before they start practice because they know they don't have a scholarship. Now there reality check normally comes in the middle of their Freshman or Sophmore year when the coach pushes them out the door.
Note-I just came up with this in the last 5 minutes, so there may be flaws with this plan
I've been reading that they'll have a bunch of early enrollees to count toward last year.. when they had a much smaller recruiting class. Still seems they're oversigning.. but not as drastically as it looks on paper right now.
Still, 8 WR in one class seems awfully ridiculous...
