Not trying to push the race card, but want your honest and open minded opinion if you think Manziel was a black QB (player) would handling of this situation by the press including governing bodies been any different? Yes, no, or elaborate if you choose. Guess I'll start...
I say yes. The NCAA could have seemed to dig a lot deeper and longer. This investigation seemed to be over as soon as it started. Wasn't much siding to any of the Bucks with what they did, when this guy signs thousands of stuff and in a weeks time the media was siding with players are being used by the NCAA and universities countering his actions, deflecting the discussion to a larger issue. Don't remember much talk of that with our team or others.
I'm not going to get into the race issue here because I think it's unnecessary.
This investigation is not over. I think that if there is more to this then it will come out and the NCAA will get involved again. This punishment was just an agreement between tamu and the NCAA that came from the meeting. I'm not defending the NCAA by any means. But I don't think the case is closed and I don't think anyone said it was closed.
This is not about race. This about conference.
Exactly. It's a conference thing. See Newton, Cam.
Agree with the assessment that it is conference thing so far.
Reading some of the boards out there, with the "he wouldn't do this because he is already a privileged white kid" excuse all the while infering that every black kid that plays college football is from the ghetto and should be happy to have this opportunity.blah, blah; it does make one wonder about the true perception of race in these matters.
+1. Why throw race into this? Scam Newton is black and he didn't even miss a snap.
The only color that matters is green. In the cases of Manziel (white) and Newton (black), the NCAA claims it couldn't find traces of it. In our case, it wasn't hidden well enough.
The NCAA has little power to investigate, if it's not laid in front of them by another entity like ours was (the Ed Rife investigation) then they can't do much. If ours had not come to light as a result of a federal investigation nothing would have happened to us either.
To me, this is about incompetence and behind the doors dealings.
In my view, the fact that a so-called privileged and rich white kid broke the rule and got away with it needs to be played to the max. The rule is stupid and unfair to everyone, regardless of background or race. It is unfair because it is not allowing college football or basketball players the same economic freedoms that any other American - or college student (regardless of whether or not they are on scholarship) - enjoys.
If this incident doesn't force a rule change, nothing will. And as long as all the hatred and anger is directed at the rule breakers (like much of TOSU fan base directed at Pryor, Posey, Herron, and others) rather than the spotlighting the idiocy of the rule and the rule makers (i.e. the NCAA), this is pointless to even debate.
Unfortunately, while he was a fierce and great football player, Gene Smith doesn't have any balls as a professional. As the big dog of the NCAA, TOSU's representative needs to be a leader and get in there and raise hell over this bullshit. Instead, I think he is satisfied being a figure head and earning a cushy salary and maintain the status quo. TOSU certainly doesn't hold him accountable for much of anything when it comes to the NCAA.
I agree its not about Race at all. Its about the obvious favoritism shown to one Conference and its Coaches. The NCAA was going to protect that 9/14/2013 Prime Time TV Game between Alabama & Texas A&M at all costs. Who'd watch the Game except the Fan Bases if Johnny "I get a Free Pass" Manziel isn't playing. Would it have the same National Appeal? No it would not and we all know this.
That's some former high profile players like Dez Bryant came out with their dissatisfaction over the way the NCAA is handling this Johnny Manziel fiasco. Dez Bryant if memory serves me (please correct me if I don't have it accurate) was basically Suspended for having a Dinner with Deion Sanders at his Home correct?
Then we had our young men suspended for the Memorabilia Scenario, with the NCAA giving Devier Posey an additional 5 Game suspension for essentially $3.07 of unclaimed overtime that's come out recently.
If this had been Braxton Miller or even a Teddy Bridgewater instead of Johnny Manziel, would they have received the same pathetic "Slap on the wrist"? I highly doubt it, which brings the NCAA under scrutiny!
Cam Newton, white, same punishment? Think$EC
Banned for the season. See OSU players.
"man we got some fuckin weirdos on this site." - Davebucknut 9/5/13 post of the year
Well said, geoditt, well said! Plus 1 to ya!
Are you fucking kidding me?
In retrospect perhaps tOSU should've hired the same legal brain trust that represented both $cam Newton and Johnny Autograph? Is the threat of some slime bag legal dream team enough to dissuade the nc2a? It looks that way.
In the end, be it a black or white athlete...the only color they really seems to matter is green.
I think it is a conference thing. And a race thing. Because you know what, no black athlete, even in the SEC. Would get away with what Manziel had been doing this entire year
Let me put it like this. If Manziel was black and flashing money around clubs and sitting courtside at nba games. Wouldnt fans start to call him a thug. A wanna be rapper?

Conference thing...let some kid in the B1G try this and see how far they get...
Race had nothing to do with it. The NCAA is simply incompetent.
Not certain, either I just had a mini-stroke or I'm half asleep, but I just heard May take the nc2a and Johnny Autograph to task in live tv. He even spoke of the Buckeyes (as well as others) in a decent light. What the hell is going on?
AJ Green -- 3 game suspension for selling his jersey?
100% agree with the later statement. Not totally sold on the first...
Is this a real question? If so it's dumb as shit! The answer in NO. Now if he was playing for a team not in the SEC there would have been a real investigation and real punishment. Outside the SEC does not include Oregon as Phil Knight has the NCAA's nuts in a vice.
BIG Champs 2013 [Buckeyes]
Pretty sure that was a different ncaa commish.
