Being unable to post on the bb thread because of all of that livestreaming garbage which the mods refuse to ban I ask this question here. I was unable to see the bb game v Northwestern but did see on the news Matta really yelling at Rav. Does anyone know why Matta was exploding on Rav? Thanks!
He got pisssed at the officials for a no call on his third or fourth blown bunny. Teammates tried to calm him down and he pushed them away. It was late in the game and a tech could have lost the game. Our Bigs were awful that game - more so than usual.
I dont know why people have made such a big deal out of this
Probably the fact that the cameras caught every single second of it..Also a very frustrated Matta, although he should have been screaming at himself for the poor coaching job he has done this year. Easily his worst as a Buckeye
How firm thy friendship O-HI-O
He has dome his best coaching job EVER this year. 21 wins and counting. The fact that they have one scorer on this team and have won 21 games purely on defense is unbelievable!
Exactly. He has done a great job with what he has. We are very fortunate to have him. Just like Meyer
Yep. And he wasnt even fouled on that play. Ravenel is who he is and that's extremely average. Amir will be solid by his senior year. He's just one of those players that needs a few years to all around develope
Perfectly stated. This team is who they are right now. Each guy has a lost of things to improve on between now and next November. It is up to them to use the off-season wisely. Not enough permissible hours for a college coach to correct them at practice.
He certainly has not done his best coaching job this season. They have won the games they were favored in and lost the ones they weren't. Great coaches get their teams up to win games. His best option coaching would have been to not keep Q glued to the bench in the second half against Northwestern. Hell Della Valle could have stretched the court a little. Northwestern plays zone and you have two guys on the court in Scott and Craft who are afraid to shoot the ball at the same time. How many times did those two take two dribbles into teeth of zone to kick out to other only to have them look at an open three and not pull the trigger. Against a zone those two should never be on the court together. Also why did it take so long to move Thomas to the 5? He kept getting back cut when guarding their wing players. Northwestern isn't big and moving him to the 5 could have allowed its to get another shooter on the court. Key words are could have because once we did that all we did was bring in Sam Thompson who is more afraid to shoot than Craft and Scott.
Were they favored last Sunday? BOOM goes your argument.
That Fn live stream bullshit on the basketball thread needs to stop!! If I had any interest in watching cricket, soccer or synchronized swimming I'd sign up for the freakin channel.
Hopefully this doesn't land crazy Ravennel in the dog house.
Great job with what he has??????????????????????
Coaches have done a better job with a team with far less talent a 100 times over.
Just my opinion but with they way he recruits, his teams should play a lot better. I know he's done a great job and this year this team had 21 wins. But I just think with all the talent they have, all the talent the had, they could be a lot better. He's a better recruiter than a coach
Actually, I'm pretty sure vegas favored osu by 2 points. If true then you should probably stop posting.....
Hey, gator fan. Go bang yourself on your own board.
They were favored by 2.5 points against Michigan State at home. BOOM goes your argument

Before you say anything we were also favored against Michigan at home

Fine, I wad wrong on that.
Let me ask you, what is the likelihood you thought we were beating MSU? If you thought we were then you are a liar. Your negative posts document the truth. Great coach, Matta is. Best we have ever had and one of the ten best in men's bball. End of story.
I actually put money on us to win the game against Michigan State. We play a lot better at home and the way Keith Appling had been playing made me believe we should win the game. I know we have talent on the team to beat Michigan State never said we didn't. Its a matter of putting the right players on the floor together when the situation calls for it. I guess I don't get the whole negative post thing. Just because I question Matta on the way he handles his bench (been a knock on him for years)and young role players doesn't mean I don't think the team has talent. I think it has more than Matta lets shine through at times. The first time we play a tourney team that throws a zone at us we will be out of the tournament because we didn't give guys like Ross or even Della Valle enough quality minutes and Matta won't trust them when we need them.
I will give you Fella Valle. I called for that in another thread just because he plays so hard. Ross....meh...I can take or leave him as he brings nothing defensively, which is how we won 21 games.
This team, in my opinion, is less talented than the UNC team that lost to Dayton in the NIT final a few years ago. We are going to finish third or fourth in the best conference and maybe only two out of first. Not bad for a down year. Down years in OSU history typically resulted in us sitting at home watching the tourney.
Randy Ayers was a great recruiter at one point. The class with Gerald Eaker, Wilborne, Macon, Simpson, and Anderson was one for the ages. When they got here they were allowed to act like thugs and the program rapidly fell apart. My point is you have to have coaching ability to do what Marta has done. Steve Fisher couldnt coach a lick and the Fab 5 never even won a conference title.
I saw this discussed on ESPN by Stephen A., Hill, etc...
I think Matta yelled at Rav because he knew the Senior could take it.
Rav could only have 4 more games playing at OSU, and probably anywhere for that matter. Time for him as a Senior to step up consistently, not just against MSU, and it also sends a message to the underclassmen that now is the time to go.
OSU is 21-7 with 7 losses to NCAA tournament teams, 6 of them will be #1-3 seeds. Aside from losses @ Illinois and @ Wisconsin the Bucks were in the other losses in the 2nd half.
Matta knows that the team is capable of more than they've produced at this point. He wants them to be hungry at this point in the season and not to be satisfied.
My issue GA, is that this team has not grown thru the year... Here are my thoughts on why I made such a bold statement earlier today:
1) Frontline rebounding and board block out is atrocious
2) Very much a "playground" offense. No rhythm nor consistency
3) Below Thomas and Craft next FT shooter is Williams at 55%... Really???
4) Next year looks little better as any offensive consistency seems to be born from hot shooting of 3's and no plan for a true offensive scheme
5) Teams who play zone well and who have defensive discipline kill us..
I think Matta is a great man and a great recruiter, but coaching and developing teams from year to year is not his skill, nor does it appear as if anyone on the staff can consistently do this as well.
Can't do a hell of a lot of scoring when you pass the ball around every possesion until the clock is running out and then taking a near impossible shot.
Run, run,run don't put leg weights on these players.
JT is God for what he did for the Buckeyes, but Thad Matta is a horrible coach because he goes 21-7 in the hardest year in the B1G I have seen in a very, very, very long time.
What the F is the board becoming.
Running teams fail against zone teams. Also, teams that slow the game down and are disciplined always win the pace of the game battle. Would you rather they take wick bad shots or look for a better shot in the time they have.
Couldn't agree more. For a team that has a bad coach and no players it sure seems like the do pretty good.
Thad is not terrible, he is a terrific recruiter and from all I can see or read a good influence and mentor. I believe he is a top coach overall. I said that this is his worst year as a Buckeye coach. My issue is unless we are hitting threes, or out running an opponent, we cannot be counted on to succeed nor be dependable winners against upper echelon teams. The "one-and-done" phenomenon recruiting scheme works providing it either continues every year or you use it as a short term strategy to develop other players as you interject your system. Thomas and Craft are studs, everyone else does not appear to progressing to the level of their initial pedigree when they came into the program. This was not the case before, as Matta and his staff have done a great job of finding players beneath the radar screen and developing them. Currently the only surprise from local to national is Craft. Thomas was Mr Basketball, I would expect him to be great. My question and reason for concern is that I do not see others developing like Evan or other Buckeyes under Matta
I must have missed the posts that said Matta was a bad coach. Or maybe some of you just cant read.
