Was just about to mention the same thing.

I hope to see UFM use a lot more of that "Power Veer" look we saw a few times last year. Brax, Hyde, & Smith all in at the same time. Talk about a 3 headed monster!
It's going to be a fantastic year for our RB's, with UFM going 4/5 wides, forcing D's to defend the entire field, our RB's should have massive holes to run thru and limited LB's to defend. I'm also excited to see Ball run, I have only seen his HS highlights.
you can pay the piper, but you can not buy his soul.
Hyde is the best back on this football team, IMO. He blends speed, power and awareness better than any of the other backs.
Can Rod be good or even great? Maybe and we all hope so.
But right now Hyde is ready to take the next step towards being great; Rod needs to be good first.

Meyer said he thought Smith was going to transfer at the beginning of last season but he did a 180 and turned it on, this year could be his breakout year you never know.

Hyde is purely straight forward power back.
Rod Smith has power, balance, feet and speed.....oh yeah...and size.
I don't care so much about him potentially being or becoming the best RB on the team but rather the best in the conference and potentially the best in the nation.
That to me is what we need to hope for at this point. And to paraphrase Meyer I'll say that we should expect excellent running backs here. Excellent not average. We have two that have won Heismans--Griffin of course winning two of them and Byars being a Doug Flutie Hail Mary away from winning a fourth for us in the past 40 years. Not to mention the standout tailbacks from Vince Workman, Robert Smith, Raymont Harris, Tim Spencer and Beanie Wells.
Not to mention the fact that his younger brother was more highly touted of a recruit than he was and will be expected to come into ND and play right away as a true Freshman. He has to feel the pressure or his competitive juices flowing to not get upstaged by his younger brother even in spite of the fact that they play different positions.
At this point he has to begin thinking legacy. What will his legacy here become. Just another tailback who may get drafted at a big-name program such as this or one of the best to ever suit up and play RB here?
The fact that Rod Smith is not a bigger facet of the offense is mind blowing. As anyone knows, I have been on here trumpeting this kid for a long time. While I like Hyde, he is what he is and in my opinion at full potential now; which is not all that bad. However, Smith's talents are undeniable. Give this kid 20 carries a game and see what he does, in my opinion it would be eye opening. He has everything you could ask for; size, speed, vision and can block (see his 8 second block last year).
While Hall coming back is not surprising; he is not an NFL caliber player, it does create doubt that Rod will ever get to fully show his potential at OSU. In some regard and just hear me out, I would consider leaving if I were him. Why stay and get 5 carries a game when you can leave and go start on a lot of other top flight squads. I would love to see him stay and fulfill his promise, but he should consider what his opportunity will be this year.
BTW, Hall is a nice player, but not fast and goes down on first contact.
I like the fact that he turned it around, but with Hyde and now Hall coming back (for what ever reason, Urban has a Tressel like allegiance to Hall), Smith will probably only get 5 carries a game.
He is already the best runner we have on the team...i worry that if he doesn't get those fumbles under control he will see even less time than he did this year.
If he was the best runner on the team he would be our feature back, not Hyde. UM is not stupid, the best back will play. Not saying that development of another year may shift carries around.
Carries will be at a premium in 2013..backs cannot afford to put it on the ground...I feel Smith can be a really good even great back here BUT..if the fumble tendency happens, he probably will be "history" due to the depth of good backs.....I believe its up to him how it goes....!
They will. It looks like we'll probably get 5 total linemen but maybe a juco kid to help with experience. To me that might be really big because we lose four after this year.
Hyde will be our man this year, Smith next year as a Sr and who knows after that. The pantry is pretty full.
watch your tone haus
I've always liked Smith but really gained a lot of respect for Hyde after this past season. The reality is we may never have a featured back now that Meyer has his play makers signed on the dotted line. Hyde, Smith, Dunn and Ball could easily rack up big yards but I'm sure Wilson, Clark and Marshall will get their share of touches. And I can't forget about some guy named Miller.
Great situation to have as a fan but maybe not so great if looking to be a 25-30 carry guy.
