For three years now UM's offense has been explosive versus bad teams and limited vs good defenses. The exception has been Denard making insane plays with his legs. Those legs are now gone. You see what our defense did to their o without him in the second half. Nebraska destroyed them without robinson. I think we are looking at a long win streak vs the skunk bears as our defense improves with Meyer's recruiting. Go Bucks!!
Personally, I think scUM will be better.
Mattison's defense will keep them in games. He's still working through RichRod's rejects.
But they need to get better OL play...it was evident during their spring game that the OL wasn't going to be very good and Velcro ran for more than 50% of their rushing yards proved it. Toussaint went from a 1000 yard rusher to half that. He didn't have a single 100-yard game. At QB, Gardner played only 4 games at QB and averaged 250 ypg and had a 177 QB rating. And Gallon, DiLeo and Funchess all return.
They'll need a new punter but their PK returns...44/44 on XP and 14/16 on FGs.
And we play them at their place.
UofM will lose 4/5 games next year.
They are slow on both sides of the ball and lack play makers.
Northwestern and MSU both could have won in AA, and both return most of their rosters and UofM goes on the road to both.
Throw in games with Notre Dame, Ohio State, at Penn State and a loaded Nebraska, Michigan is looking at another 5 loss season.
Gardner was just what Henne, Forcier and DRob were, above average QB's that put up huge numbers against stiff and their fans get giddy and call them "the next great UofM QB", then they play real defenses with speed and athletes and stink.
The UofM defensive numbers were a mirage, they padded those pass numbers against bad passing teams like Air Foce, UMass, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and MSU, and got gouged by real offenses like Bama, Air Force on the ground, Northwestern and Ohio State.
Michigan was smoke and mirrors, and once again had a weak Big Ten schedule, they are fools gold.
Their 2013 recruiting class is full of no play makers on either side of the ball, and overrated Michigan HS kids, Michigan HS football is mediocre at best in large part.
Michigan is a paper tiger, they will get crushed in the Capitol One bowl and go 8-5 this year and next year as well.
I agree with you 100%.
We had a poll on our blog before the season..the average prediction was 9-3. We were pretty realistic about the talent level of our team this year. I think we could have won at Nebraska if Denard hadn't gotten hurt, but we lost, so be it.
Our OL was HORRID. We had no running game all year. That said, we lose a couple guys there, but our incoming talent is pretty good.
The real question will be our offense, like you saw yesterday. If we can't run the ball, we will be an 8-4 team AT BEST. Our defense will actually be better, as our top corner returns.
I actually think you guys, remarkably, will be better next year too. I think this rivalry is going to get real fun.
As long as Hoke is at Michigan, they will always be 8-4, 9-3 or the occassional 10 or 11 win team.
Hoke is not an elite coach, not even close. Meyer is the class of the conference, and Hoke ain't no clear cut top coach after that, and not sure you can rank him above Dantonio or Pelini (he has played for 3 conference titles in the last 4 years, two in the Big 12 and now Big 10), with Big Ten titles, or even Fitzgerald or Ferentz. Ferentz had a bad year, but he has several Big Ten titles and accomplished more career wise than Hoke.
Hoke is Lloyd Carr plus 200 pounds.
Hoke was a safe hire they tried to play up as a Michigan man after several big names turned Michigan down again, he is not elite.
Notre Dame with Kelly will beat Michigan the next two years, go off the schedule a short while, and come back and beat them a lot down the road.
Kelly is twice the coach as Hoke, his career resume shows it, and national titles along the way at smaller schools, just like Tressel did.
I agree about Kelly. I'm so glad UM didn't get him. Then we would have a ten year war on our hands. I think Kelly and Urban Meyer are both top five coaches in the country. Saban has to be in there too.
As it stands Michigan will start the season with two losses on their schedule until the nd contract is up. Good luck when you're playing for 10 and 2 before the season even starts.
It's always been fun. We just both haven't been very good at the same time for a while so that's taken the edge off the knives a little bit. Urban and Hoke are sharpening the edges again. What will hurt it more than anything will be moving it to October and that's a move I fear may be coming.
I'm curious: how do you guys feel about a) being in separate divisions, and b) possibly playing on consecutive Saturdays. That's a game only the loser of the first game's going to want.
And we're about to see that scenario pan out as Stanford and UCLA play again in the Pac-12 conference championship game. Yawn.
I think it will all depend on who Michigan has at QB. Their defense will be solid. But the offense will only be as good as the QB, and I don't think Gardener is the answer. Robinson had the ability to control the game with his running. Without him in the game, they don't have an offense that can compete. Give Michigan a full year with one QB and the chance to jell a bit as a unit, and I think they could be better than this year.
Tressel also brought in top OL talent but Bowman used more reaction and zone blocking which is very similar to what Michigan seems to run. It works great until you're up against a team very good stunting defensive line with speed. The OL has to react to what the defense is doing but with speed on the ends it can be sometimes difficult as was shown yesterday. It will be interesting to see if Michigan can do a better job developing their offensive line.

I would rather be in the same division as Michigan. Our divisional competition won't be as strong as theirs over the next few years and we all know that strong competition builds better teams.
Stop smoking crack it fucks your head up. If you think they will lose 5 games a year your sick in the head. Dude they just had a season where they just played 6 away games and 4 road games vs the number 1,2,4 and 14 teams in the country its not like they didn't play anyone like we did where we had 8 home games and a cupcake schedule so enough with all this bull crap about how much they will suck no they wont. Not in this shitty big ten and stop kissing Brian Kelly's ass everyone thought the guy was a joke the last few seasons now everyone thinks he is the best coach since Nick Saban. Just goes to show you how stupid most college football fans are.
im interested to see how it looks without denard. for as pathetic of a thrower he was, he ran the ball better than just about any "quarterback" i have ever seen. nearly every team dared them to beat them with denards arm, yet he would still rush for a 125-175 yards. he was their entire running game this year. so how are they going to suddenly make that up next year? even with fitz touissant the outcome of yesterdays game remains the same. denard had what, 127 yards rushing and michigan i think had 115 overall rushing yards. and maybe im the minority, but what is exactly special with devin gardner? cool he threw for 316 yards against iowa. he looked awful yesterday. i think michigan will have to win a lot of games on defense next year.
Lloyd Carr actually won conference championships....and a NC title to boot...
Either of which Hoke has yet to do....in any conference he's been in.

LOL the guy has only been there for 2 years dam take it easy. Everyone is in such a hurry to bran the guy a failure let him bring his own players in and see how he does in the next few years before we all go crazy. He did win a BCS game,
They have a decent line class coming in. They have a QB coming in who fits what they want to do. All they really need is a big back who can carry the rock 25 times a game and a guy who can get vertical and they will be there. I don't think they will ever break through their glass ceiling but they will still be good and will make us look good every year when we beat them again and again and again. I hope they keep Hoke forever.
I mean Brady "Mayor McCheese" Hoke Vs. Urban Meyer? I laugh every time just saying it. And I love it when Michigan fans think they have a chance. Makes me chuckle.
"The only thing That Team Up North will be tasting this year is the salty tears of defeat" - UFM
Counting on Freshmen Olinemen to contribute right away is not a good position to be in. Its a big transition from HS to college football especially against dominant upper class D-lines like OSU, ND, Wisc, MSU etc... You can get away with it against the Indiana and Minnesotas of the world.
Not sure I would count on Kalis being able to match up with Hankins, Bennett, Washington.
Imo, this is as close as UM will come to winning The Game for the next 5 years minimum. And, the final score was much closer than the actual game. Should have been a 21-24 point OSU victory if not for unforced errors for which UM had nothing to do with. Bad snap and fumbled punt just to name a couple. UM's defense had no answer for Hyde and there is no reason to think you will find one by this time next year as we return all but 2 starters on offense.
Last, I personally know a couple of the recruits that your fan base is touting as the saviours, believe me when I say, if you are relying on these players to beat OSU, you guys are in big trouble.
I agree to a certain extent. However, many of the players he is bringing in are vastly over rated. Plus, it will take time for them to get to the level they need to be in order to compete with the big boys.
Also, he is not going to out recruit Urban Meyer who has a better brand to sell and a significantly better recruiting base in Ohio to sell it to. There is absolutely no reason to believe Hoke is going to out coach Urban and his staff. OSU simply has better players and better coaches who are moving the program to the next level while Hoke & Company cannot even win their division of a very weak B1G conference during a year in which they have a senior QB. As much as it pains me to say it, I just don't see UM ever getting back to an elite program. Harbaugh was their chance and that ship has sailed.
I think Michigan will be better in two years, when Shane Morris is able to effectively start (he fits the pro-style offense it appears they'd like to move to and are recruiting for). I wasn't terribly impressed with Devin Gardner. I think they'll give him another year though until Morris is ready, and he'll continue to look great against average to bad teams, and ineffective against quality teams.
2 years will also be the time you'll see the impact of Hoke's last two quality recruiting classes. I don't see them becoming a Championship team, though, just a very solid top 10 team. I think their last 2 classes, at the same time, have been paper tigers in the sense that they've done a great job of recruiting top 100 OL (which boosts their Class Ranking), but outside of Morris at QB (if you consider QB a skill position) they've had almost no luck recruiting skill position players (Treadwell and Derrick Green are their last two chances to do so this year, and those 2 are anyone's guess; they didn't get anyone last year).

I agree with you about Urban getting the better players and winning more but im not buying everyone saying Hoke will be awful at Michigan thats just not going to happen he will win his share of games I mean anyone can in the BIG its so easy. About his recruits being over rated I don't know I don't think anyone can know till they play to be honest Recruiting is a crap shoot sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. I remember John Cooper once said about Recruiting that out of a full class you just hope you get around 10 -11 guys who make it to being really good players in any giving Recruiting class.
No.....it's not that.
Too many comparisons to Tressel and then this comparison to Lloyd Carr....
Completely off base. I agree....he needs time to make any statements that have currently been made...
But his resume even coming in to Michigan was less than stellar.....
Michigan loses for next year.
Next year Michigan loses Denard Robinson: a massive lose for them as he was the offense AND 3/5th of his OL and maybe 4/5ths of the OL if Lewan goes pro and he should. Michigan loses their best WR Roundtree, half of their secondary including Kovacs the defenses leader, their best interior DL in Will Campbell, their key LB in Demens and their best DE in Craig Roh? What hurts is I did not see a lot of their young talent in the two/three deep for the OSU game. Erk Magnuson maybe but Kalis was third string.
I see key losses and significant losses in very experienced personnel and no comparables to Denard Robinson who made this team.
Let's see how good the Michigan defense is when they lose many years of experience?!!
They will be fine on D Will Campbell is a Bust never became the player they thought he would be coming out of high school as a 5 star. Craig Roh is another guy who never really became the player people thought he would be he was a big time player coming out of High sckool only to become a sold player at best Demens is another sold player but they have a lot of good young players at LB.So I don't think the losses on D will be that of a big deal they seem to have better younger players coming up. Now On the O side of the ball losing Denard will hurt but the fact that he wasn't able to make the hard throws will help them to finally bring in a real QB to give them better chances of winning the bigger games. WRs is a push they lose Roundree but he wasn't anything great they have good young WRs they like to fill in next year. The OL will be the biggest Porb for them Lewan will be a big loss he is the best they have But as all Michigan fans will say they have a lot of good young OL coming up thats true but r they ready? how long will it take them to geal.
TSUN will have about the same record next year as they did this year. They WILL NOT be as good but their schedule is a bit easier. They lose most of their OL. They lose one of the greatest playmakers in CFB in DRob. Gardner is a good player but he is not the playmaker DRob is. There is no comparison. He is also prone to turning the ball over. Gardner will get better but is not even close to being the runner and playmaker DRob is. I believe that the scUM Offense is going to struggle next year. JMHO.
Ues, I agree they will win sime games. There are 5-6 gimmies on the schedule every year. I just dont see them being able to compete with OSU and other top tier non B1G teams. 8-4 or 9-3 every year with the MSU game being the difference.
As far as recruiting goes, i agree you have to wait and see but when you know a kid personally, you know how they are wired and I am telling you they have 2-3 players who have no business playing B1G football I dont care how many stars they have.
And what if Shane Morris is not any good, what then? They will be a 6-6 to 5-7 type team as they dont have any playmakers at key positions.
Are you just basing this on one year ? I mean they did win 11 games last year. Yeah they are an 8 win team this year but look at who they played I mean 6 away games and on the road playing number 184.108.40.206 those are tough games in tough places with not much great players on that team. So will see what happens next year think year 3 is always a big year for new coach's.
good point.....I wonder how many losses we would have had if we played Michigan's schedule this year.....I thinkwe also lose to Bama and ND.
