Am I the only one that's worried about WR recruiting. I see we are still offering guys from the 2013 class, trying to get a flip late. That doesn't inspire confidence in me, in particular with the postition coach. It doesn't seem(key word is seem) from the outside looking in that Zach Smith is pulling his weight in reguards to recruiting. Him with his tweets that seemed a bit low brow in all. Hope I'm wrong, but I haven't seen his name in recruiting trips or players in their bio have him as their lead recruiter. I see Coombs, Varbel, Fickel, Herman, Whithers as recruiting players. I'm probably overreacting since OSU does have a stellar class and got some athletes that will play WR, but that pure WR seems like we've been left at the alter. Of course, I guess we could say the same thing about the Oline recruiting but we landed 3 guys last year and it is obvious the line was coached well on the field of play. Smith is really young so he might be in the process of learning the craft of recruiting, Meyer likes him and he obviously knows what he is doing and I'm just so joe blow on a computer. But hey, I'm from the same hometown as Meyer so does that qualify me? Probably not because it's the same hometown as Jim Bollman! Yikes! maybe I should shut up.
Just take the "We have UFM. No need to worry about ANYTHING" approach that i do. We wont land everybody(Quick)but he and staff are going after the best regardless(kids already committed late). Probably slim chance on these committed but I love it!
A lot of Chicken Little's on this board. Always looking for the sky to fall.
Between Clark, Gibson and Elder, we're going to get at least 1 great receiver. Add in Marshall and Jacobs, and this will be a great group of WR's.
If u watched most osu games, we lacked a guy who could take a 5 yrd slant, make 3 people miss and go 80 yrds "to the house". "If u dont have it, u have to recruit it" the frustration is mounting due to the fact, that the obvious guys i.e diggs, neal, quick, treadwell to name a few are real wide receivers not being asked to switch positions. and we're striking out... gibson was the first guy urban offered, he still is not a buckeye "enough said" corn really wants to play basketball and in all his highlights he was playing tailback... when u have a coaching staff filled with good to excellant recruiters, who can sell themself as ur future position coach, it becomes really easy to point out the weak links! We cant get satisfied with anything jus good enough to beat ttun, we gotta go beat bama... "go bucks!"
Marshall, barring injury, is going to be special here. Also, if Lee does not grow into an LB, he is going to be a great boundary receiver.
The argument can be made, our assistant coaches do not recruit by position, they recruit by region. i.e vrabel north east coast, withers carolina's, herman texas... where is zach smith's region? Who is he bringing in.. imho, urban has him under the gun, and that was the reason for his bizarre twitter rant!
jalin marshall, taivon jacobs, add in elder or gibson or corey smith. not sure what some people want.
also people are mad we couldnt land diggs and quick, two guys who decided to be hometown heros. how can you be mad about that? seeing those guys stay home doesnt bother me at all.
I think part of it too is the different philosophy Urban brings. We aren't used to his super intense style yet. He is never finished, never content with what he has. He will always be looking, trying to improve every position in any way he can, until the ink is dry on NLOID.
I was worried when he first got here and said he doesn't red shirt, basically it's "next man up". Now I'm not worried, I see how hard he recruits, and I'm much more comfortable with our depth.
Nobody is mad about those guys staying home. I'm certainly not and I never get mad at a kid for choosing other schools. They are just kids. I just want OSU to be it's best. I am looking at patterns over the past 2 years and my original question was wondering if everybody thinks Zach Smith is pulling his weight in terms of recruiting as compared to the other guys on the staff. I trust Urban and it is a different style of recruiting. I'm not being negative or like someone said a "chicken little" I just want OSU to be the best and to not rest. I'm viewing it through how Urban is. He is never satisfied, correct? And as a fan I beleive we should follow that lead, never satisfied. You can be excited and happy but also wanting more. Greed is good I guess when it comes to winning football. I want OSU to win, in recruiting, in academics, in the community, and especially on the football field.
I think we are hurting more on O-line recruiting right now.
While I've never been impressed with Smith's coaching credentials to think he deserves a job this high profile--it reminds me of the Beaver hanging around with Wally and his friends and just can't relate to life at their level--and feels more like Urban was paying tribute to Earle by hiring him, I have to agree with Bri that I am more concerned with OL depth than WR depth. We have guys who can catch the ball and run with it. What we don't have is a lot of depth on the OL. We will graduate 4 senior starters after this season.
In 2014, our defense will be lights out fast and nasty and Braxton will be a senior but could find himself running for his life because we have a screen door for an offensive line. We need guys who can step in and be ready to play and aside from Decker, who should take Fragel's RT spot, they're not there...yet.
that's why you have offseasons. for guys to grow and get better. this isnt directed at you but im not sure i have ever seen a fan base give up on guys quicker than our fan base. we have several young guys at wr and o line which people just write off due to them not making a big impact this past season. guys grow, mature and get better
I agree also with this. I'd say oline recruting hasn't been as good as I expected because of the easily visable improvement of the line under coach Warriner. It's night and day. Of course, he was following Bollman so maybe the improvement was more visable because of that. Nothing's perfect I guess. I think they like the 2014 recruites better for OL. They need at least 4 OL from that class.
gibson committed to wvu
I get that but after the 4 seniors and Decker, what do we have:
Baldwin: moved over from defense, some mop up duty;
Boren: little undersized at 287, hurt most of last year;
Brown: one of the last two remnants of Bollman's last OL recruiting class...'nuff said;
Dodson: redshirted, possibly hurt;
Farris: moved over from defense;
O'Connor: medical redshirt;
Underwood: see Brown.
It's not like we have a slew of 5-stars waiting in the wings like Alabama does, not when we're moving bodies over from defense. As Urban said, the problem with the B1G isn't quality but quality depth. I'm assuming that applies to us, too.
If one of the starters gets injured, especially at tackle, we could be in trouble. That may be the most amazing thing about 2012--not how the OL stepped up but how they somehow managed to all stay healthy.
Im not giving up on anyone. The numbers just arent there and its just my opinion that you take a minimu of 3 o-line every year. We may hae 5 good starters and some capable guys in the 2 deep. But with lack of #'s what happens when a couple dont pan out and a couple go down with injury. All of a sudden WE R FUCKED. So 2 IMO just isnt enough in any recruiting year.
i get ya. what i was saying was more of a general statement of how people just give up on guys. i have no idea how these young guys will pan out. they were recruited to ohio state for some reason. last year we have 5 lineman in that class. this year we have 2 for sures, one possible switch in price, and are recruiting skipper and hunt, let's just say at the worst price moves to o line, that's 3 in this class, 5 in last years class which is above your average. dodson, decker and lisle are all high 4 stars. chase farris coming out of high school was a 4 star who everyone said could play either side and is even a guy urban mentioned who was stepping his game up. little boren was getting amazing reviews. o'connor was a high 4 star. gardner is a 3 star but he truly earned his scholarship in front of our current coaches. underwood i have no idea what to expect, he started 2 games in 2011 as a freshman and got worked. not going to beat him up for it.
saw this on twitter..makes me wonder if grades were indeed a problem or if the staff slow played the kid. with all these recent offers to WR's, maybe he felt some sort of way about that and decided to go to WVU. He's a great fit for either offense so i expect him to have a good career there if the commitment sticks. Good luck to the kid either way
