I see same problems on D as last year, it's just in-inspired no damn pressure no push. Fick was always a CO-Coordinator, really wondering after 4 games if he actually called defensive plays. I mean we are better than it shows, perhaps Fick needs to take a step back and let Withers call plays for a game. When he was under Butch and then interim he recruited and called every defensive play. Even with suspensions was still a top 10 D. I know I will catch heat, but Fick was hired under Tressel, and how much input did he really have? He wasn't elevated to co-coordinator till Hazell went to Kent. Not only do I think he was over his head last year, he is even more so this year.
I never liked Fick even when Tress was here. Got killed for it too when everyone was clamoring for him to be HC someday.
No kidding. I hate that offense he is running. Not sure what to make out of that defense, it's awlful.
I would agree, but he needs to sit down with Withers as well.
I am wondering who is calling the defensive scheme/game plan, because it looks ugly in person.
Ok so we traded an unwatchable offense (remember Tresselball) for a unwatchable defense. One of these days they will put it all together.
Ohio State is not the Cleveland Browns. We don't repeatedly turn over our coaching staff and then fire them midseason.
Sorry. It was "I'm pained watching it". On a ton of meds today due to the worst illness I think I've ever had. I had a feeling I messed it up somehow.
Sorry. Reply was supposed to be to ShaneG. Couldn't even remember to do that...
You are hanging your hat on a D that gave up 9 points? UAB outgained us at home and controlled the D most of the game (as did Cal). If you think the D is ok youre high.
True that, all the way.
Wow. Just look at what D pressure is doing to Renard right now. That dude is out of his game.
I don't think anyone is calling for Fickell to be let go now....that would be bad form....only a coach at say a school like Wisconsin would do that. However Fickell will not be here next year and you can mark that down. He's a holdover from the former staff and be will be gone as well as Vrabel most likely. It is time for Fickell to see if he can be a HC somewhere so I'm sure UM will help him get a job as HC somewhere next year. Fickell has given his all to OSU and is a buckeye but I'm betting we will never see him on the sidelines for OSU again after this season.
I think its frustrating because it seems like EVERYONE but the coaches can see the problems. I'm not a coach but if a person uses a little common sense it is easy to see a 10 yard cushion is not going to cut it when they only need 3 yards for a first down. Also why the hell not give these freshman a chance? Williams is hurt and chasing a receiver in coverage? Klein is playing because this is the best we have or knows the plays?
Once again, Luke! Withers is what?
Someone said give him a pass cuz he wasn't here last year. Someone posted he brings NFL experience. And perhaps the most enlightening, someone posted his recruiting prowess. Well, he gets credit for Jamal Marcus, so why isn't the kid F...ING playing?
Furthermore there were times we needed 2 or 3 yards for a first, and what did we do?
Luv ya nut, but I will start charging Urban for this....he is the HC!
"Any board that would ban 3yds is worthless"
For all the people who are talking about "we only gave up three fgs," the reason people are upset is who we were playing. UAB is widely considered to be one of the worst teams in football. If they ranked all the teams in football they would be somewhere down around 100 or lower. They are in ESPNs bottom 10 and rushed for 27 yards in a beat down they got from a SCAR team playing without their starting qb. This is why we were 36 point favorites and people are pissed that they dropped nearly 500 yards of offense on us.
You summed that up very well. UAB is awful
+1. Great post. Don't worry you will also see that "we had starters out", and the old "we are young" excuse coming soon. Be prepared.
You know it's coming Chu! Don't doubt it for a second
Well, consider this. We gave up three field goals and no touchdowns and we had two starters out in the secondary. Plus, outside of one or two sterling seniors, we are very young. :-)
Yes, the defense stunk it up. Not so bad as the special teams and equally as bad as the offense which was going against one of the worst defenses in D-1 football. So, if you think that firing Luke Fickell fixes everything, good for you.
the C. Bryant 'rockstar' comment didn't sit well w/me when i read it last week, and yesterday's taunting call, just or not, is a good indication why...
8. Christian Bryant is doing more harm than good. When he lines up a perfect hit and delivers a slobber-knocker, Bryant is as exciting a player as there is in the Big Ten. He can really bring it and he has a knack for being around the football. Unfortunately he also thinks making the big hit is more important than securing the tackle. He loves to lead with his right shoulder and the next time he wraps up a ball-carrier will be the first. To make matters worse, Bryant talks like he’s Ed Reed in his fifth year with the Baltimore Ravens. He picked up an senseless personal foul penalty against UAB and doesn’t seem to understand that this team has a lot of issues right now. The last thing they need is him mouthing off after a play.
Ok, but Ill say it.....this defense is unwatchable
EXACTLY, I believe razor said it earlier in the thread too. It was UAB for christs sake. "we only gave blah blah". They shouldnt have got squat, zip, zilch, nothing. The game should have been out of reach for them by halftime, not hanging in to try and win.
I know we set our expectations too high for this team, I know they are young and have to grow, etc.. However I do expect better than that performance. That was atrocious. IMHO, saying anything less is just excuse making. Fick needs to go to LB's only (IMO).
Firing Fickell would not fix everything and I dont think anyone is saying that. However, if you make NO changes (much like we dont in defensive schemes) you are never going to get a different result (hence the yardage). Witht that said, we have to make a change to get different results. There is no 1 thing that will fix everything, but you have to start somewhere, right? Or since there is not one magic fix, we should do nothing?
I can tolerate a lot of things, senseless selfish penalties like taunting I have no patience for at all especially when the taunter is part of the problem. It's like celebrating in the end zone when your team just scored a touchdown while losing in a 50-7 ass-kicking. I'd sit his ass if I were Urban to make a point.
