we were misled NJ....
* Freshman linebackers Joshua Perry and Camren Williams will play this week, and the plan is to get them each some meaningful minutes. "The linebackers at Ohio State need to get much better," Meyer said. That improvement either needs to come from the older guys, or via the development of the younger guys. Some of that development will be on the field this Saturday.
the same article mentions rewarding Rod Smith w/time....not much of a reward yesterday
Holy shit, Indy! you mean we shouldn't blame Luke for this...
btw, the 'other' D-coord. just happens to be the safeties coach too.
but I think he and Coombs were watching the game @ Roosters, or NYOH, or somewhere else....
Its Fickels fault, he did not specifically tell him not to taunt on that play
The offense is in a brand new scheme and has made strides forward. While it's not good, it's moving the correct way. The defense, however, is making strides backwards. Ever since Fickell had play calling responsibilities the defense has continued to slide backwards. His schemes are bad and he can't adjust to what the other teams are doing. He's never correctly defended a bubble screen in his entire tenure at Ohio State. And the fundamentals of our young players are worse than at any other time in my lifetime at Ohio State. He takes responsibility for that. The offense has not been great (the special teams, overall, has been decent) but the defense has been consistently bad and moving in the wrong direction the entire time.
There is a tendency to protect Fickel as many were excited about the Buckeye player becomes coach becomes head coach theory.
Problem here is the coach can't coach. It's unfortunate.
"man we got some fuckin weirdos on this site." - Davebucknut 9/5/13 post of the year
Pretty obvious who ran the defense folks , it was Jim Heacock not Luke Fickell like posters in here tried to make it out to be. I would contribute to a fund right now to bring Heacock back.
You are exactly right, the offense is a totally new scheme, no excuse for a defense that runs the same scheme as last year. I said it before the season started about my concerns with Luke running the defense and the concerns are rearing their ugly head. The good thing is the Big Ten is one of the worst conferences in the nation.

Posters in here think if you played at OSU it automatically makes you a great coach.LOL!
In my opinion, at least, some of the missed tackling is due to trying to cause a fumble instead of wrapping up and dragging down. The young guys in particular keep trying to shoulder guys down. I am tired of seeing 5 red jerseys surrounding a running back being more concerned with trying to rip the ball than with limiting yards after contact.
Also, we have a few good/great great players and effort, but this is not yet a TEAM. The issues for this Ohio State team do not simply boil down to one coach.
Please, Heacock is NOT missed! His defenses were the same react NOT attack! We need someone in here whio knows how to tackle! A peewee rteam knows how to tackle better than this team, And the secondary can't cover me!
Actually, the same complaints about the defense that were made regarding Heacock in 2004, 2007, and 2008, that are being made about Fickell NOW. Folks were screaming for Heacock's head on a plate because the defenses were average rather than extraordinary.
This team, so far is above average at best. The team has not yet established an identity. I think that the youth on the team is perhaps showing in some of the kinds of mistakes that are being made.
heckok played the same silly 15 yard cushion
Yes, indeed! The last three DC's played the same way. They are all so stupid!
Same shit from last year so we can blame Fickell.LOL!
He may have at times but his defense were the reason Jim Tressel consistently ranked 65th in the country on offense and still won even if he ran the off tackle play 30 times a game. I would take Heacock in a heartbeat.
Here is a tidbit to back up my arguement and I added a note about the role of Luke Fickell in the defense as some people question who is calling the defense, it is Luke.
From the get-go, Heacock flourished in his role as the man who made the Silver Bullets go. In his first season at the helm, Ohio State ranked first in the country in run defense, as well as fifth in the nation for both points against and total defense.
That was a trend that was set to continue as Heacock's teams continually finished ranked amongst the best in the country in all defensive categories, with his accomplishments being significantly recognized in 2007 when he went on to win the Frank Broyles National Assistant Coach of the Year Award after that team's defense led the country in scoring defense, total defense, and pass defense.
After growing up fast the hard way during last year's 6-7 campaign, Fickell will finally get his shot to run the show on defense, as Meyer named him the primary play caller for the unit.

Me too. To whom do I make out the check?
"Buckeye born and bred, a Buckeye 'til I'm dead"
We don't have the premium defensive talent. We lost the top linebacker in Ohio 2 years in a row. 2 top level 4-5 star Linebackers. One starts for Texas and the other bama. Our weakness is linebacker,,,,,,maybe Fick should lace em up and play this Saturday. We have been staring a dog DE Moore (low 3 star) due to injuries and we have not produced a stud safety in a few years. The last highly rated Ohio high school safety went out of state. (he turned out to be a bust) We have maybe 2 or 3 guys starting that would be in the two deep of our last national championship team. Maybe better coaching could help.....but you can't make lemonade with out lemons. Our top defensive recuits from last year are lineman and are still green......take a breath and get off the ledge.
so you agree fire fickel now
Don't disagree with what is said above but you didn't address the question of Luke running the same philosophy as Dantonio and Heacock. You seem to simply state that this year the defense stinks so it has to be Fickell's fault.
Your a stats man so I'll add this. Last year's defense ranked 19th in the country in total defense, 14th against the pass. Not too shabby when you realize that our offense ranked 107 in total offense, continually going three and out, putting tremendous pressure on the D.
The idea that the defense has not been playing well this year so it must be Fickell's fault, therefore, fire Fickell is just an easy solution to what might be a complicated question. Wither's defense at NC last year ranked 49th in total defense. Combs' pass D at Cincinnati ranked 99th, the worst of any defensive unit on the Bearcat team. Is there any chance at all that Luke is not the problem?
Sometimes it takes some time for old coaches, new coaches and veteran and first year players to find a chemistry and play with a balance of anger and control. Let's give it a few more games before we try to run Fickell out of town, eh?
No, Let Urb recruit and get better talent.....then find the best man to coach them and make the change. Firing him now serves no purpose other than pandering to an over reacting fan base. You homers really need to chill. You over estimated the talent.
I'm just impressed sofla spoke english!
It's cause he likes me.
sounds like its personal..
Too logical, too obvious, too simple, therefore unacceptable to this board...
Does everyone seriously think Fickel just forgot how to coach this season??
I know that Heacock is not here anymore, and he called the plays...but Fickel was a main part of defensive game planning the past...I dont know how many seasons.
So..what happened...Fickel just forgot? He doesnt know how to coach anymore? Where are the other defensive coaches. Where Withers, isnt he a CO-d. coordinator.
There is more going on here than Fickel.
