Depth Chart, Urban talks Leaders

  • Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with the media Wednesday and unveiled a post-spring depth chart. It didn't contain a lot of surprises.

Some of the most interesting items from the depth chart -- and Meyer's comments -- included: •Doran Grant has risen to co-starter status with Travis Howard at cornerback.
•Spring game sensation Michael Thomas is listed as the backup to Devin Smith at receiver, with Corey Brown and Evan Spencer the other starters there. But Meyer didn't have great things to say about the receivers, calling them one of the most unprepared groups he's ever coached, though they have gotten better. He said they have enough talent "to be functional."
    • Jordan Hall is the starting running back, ahead of Carlos Hyde. Not a big surprise there, given Hall's versatility and fit in the Meyer offense. Meyer also said fullback Zach Boren will get carries. "He is someone who can wiggle in space. He is much better than I thought. He can catch and carry the football.”
•Adam Bellamy is ticketed to start at one defensive end spot, with Nathan Williams -- who's coming back from microfracture knee surgery -- listed next to him in parentheses. Michael Bennett is a backup defensive lineman even though Meyer praised his spring performance. "He’s listed as a backup to Johnathan Hankins but that may not necessarily be the case in the fall. It’s hard for me to say that he isn’t one of the four best.”
•Freshman Taylor Decker is pushing Reid Fragel at right tackle. The offensive line shaped up as expected, but Meyer singled out center Corey Linsley for praise. "He was a surprise on offense, but not really a surprise. I just hadn’t seen him play. But he is a journeyman-to-starter player. He has the potential to be a very good player.”
•Meyer also stressed the need for leadership, saying that aspect obviously wasn't very good last year when several seniors earned suspensions. “Talent will get you seven or eight wins. Discipline gets you to around nine. Leadership is when the magic starts happening.”

  • the more I read about Meyer the more impressed I am. Man is a true leader of inspiration, lets hope he inspires these players to put in 110% this summer.

As much as I liked Tressel as a coach, I absolutely love Urban Meyer. He has no weaknesses or flaws and makes sure all 3 aspects of the game are to full potential. Tressel severely neglected the offensive side of the ball with exception of maybe 2 years. Tressel's offense during the Boeckman years was like watching a horror movie. Run on first, run on second, bad pass on 3rd, punt. I love Tress but I sure wont miss watching that offense. If there was ever an example of destiny then ”Urban Meyer being coach of Ohio State” is the model example of destiny fulfilled.

Agree, Roby really has been impressive. Heard good things out of spring practices about him as well.

yikes, enough talent at the WR position to be 'functonal' we need a talent infusion at this position ..

I'm not sure why you quoted what I said? My statement and yours have nothing to do with each other from what I can tell. Was there something you were trying to ask about with regard to what I said above?

I think Howard's a tougher hitter than Roby. In the Wisconsin game, he laid Nick Toon out on his ass. Go to 1:45 on the attached link for that hit. But hitting and tackling aren't as important for CBs as pass coverage. The best are called shutdown corners, not knockdown corners.

I thought it was the best game our DBs played as unit. Their fun support in that game was awesome.

It didn't contain a lot of surprises?

Doran Grant rising to co-starter status is a bit surprising. Sure he was one of the prize landings in last year's recruiting class, however with both Roby and Howard seeming to have the two corner spots locked up, I am surprised.

Could this mean that Roby may be moving over to one of the Safety spots?

Michael Thomas now becoming a backup to Devin Smith and even Evan Spencer becoming the other starter is surprising as well. Or to put it more succinct--it's a surprise but not a surprise. Not surprising going into the spring game. We thought this would be the WR corps but considering the good things we had seen and were hearing about Thomas, it is to me.

I also wonder how long Bellamy and Williams will remain starters at DE--esp once Washington, Pittman and Spence arrive.

I agree that the Wisconsin game was the best game our DBs had--including C.J. Barnett.

Going into next season my thought was that Roby could potentially be on the Thorpe Award watch list.

And you're exactly right about shutdown vs knockdown corners. We've had more of the latter in recent years. I think some DBs and defensive players these days in general believe they're so powerful and mighty that they can knock out an opposing WR or RB with just a bump. It's as if they never take into account that if he's not down that he can get back up or retain his footing and keep going. Just another example of how tackling techniques aren't emphasized as much as they once were.

hey, I didn't write it Sugar....no matter what this says, the 'chart' is basically in pencil. Once some of the recruits like Spence get here.....'nuff said. Personally, I want Perkins to see playing time....seems to be another Shazier. Also he said they hit it off when he was here...can't wait!

Not sure that's the link you wanted to attach--it's 1:52 of Perkins's junior highlight film.

It will be interesting to see which linebackers and defensive end recruits will step into the rotation. I know many of the back-up linebacker positions are open to whoever is willing to put in the work. The defensive end position may not be as easy to crack the starting lineup, but I think one or two of them could play.
