Fickell Stock just plummeted!

  • buckybuckbuck said...

Sell! Sell! Sell! Its crashing! NNo way can anyone want him back. Once again he gave up. No time out again? He was completely out of this game IMO

Uh....it crashed about 5 weeks ago in the second half of that Nebraska game. Or the entire Michigan St game...or Miami game...or Toledo....or the second he named Joe B. his starting QB.

You are disrespecting the guy by stating that "he isn't head coaching material". This is what I mean by piling on.

Fickell isn't head coaching material and I think most posters are stating the facts. He got outcoached versus Toledo, Miami, Fla, Nebraska, Michigan State, Penn State and Purdue and probably Michigan. That's over half of his scheduled opponents. OSU had more talent versus each opponent yet loses to them. Fickell's failure to make game time changes both offensively and defensively, time management, play calling lack of imagination, creativity and ingenuity, failure to evaluate a really bad QB in Bauserman and the list goes on and on with this current coach. For example, why was Ohio State running the Wildcat option against PSU when Miller wasn't even in the game. They couldn't stop the PSU's wildcat, it wasn't like they didn't see it versus Purdue and Indiana.
The Michigan game should be the last game to this tumultuous train wreck of a football season. OSU should forgo the Papa John's Bowl, Insight Bowl, Port O'John Bowl or the Toilet Bowl bid altogether. Their PR department can state that due to the pending NCAA investigation, the university felt it was in their best interest to forgo a future bowl game in order to rectify and to appease the NCAA in possible bowl sanctions for the DeGeronimo affair. I am sure Gene Smith and Gordon Geek will take the bowling for dollars cash and get beat by either a MAC , Big XII and especially a SEC school.

  • It plummeted when he named Bauserman the starter and Bollman the coordinator. It was then that I knew he was in over his head.

I agree that Fickell's coaching performance was not stellar. He should have started Miller from Day one and canned Bollman (if he had the authority). But your post fails to recognize that he dealt with suspensions (some of which were extended), a freshman QB, and alot of inexperience at many other positions, and injuries (Nate Williams was a big loss). This made up for any "talent" differential OSU may have had on paper in some of the games we lost.

Frankly, I think it is fair to say it is possible that the Penn St. loss was due, at least in part, to the university undermining Fickell by prematurely opening talks with Meyer and the fans' collective lust for Meyer starting a crazy media and internet feeding frenzy. We were indeed a distracted team against Penn St, coming out flat on D, fumbles, dropped passes, etc. This loss was much more than just coaching deficiencies. Maybe some of you helped to create this crappy and embarrassing environment.

To say you don't want to go to a bowl game because you are angry with Fickell is a poorly conceived opinion that does not benefit the program going forward. Get over yourself and your bad feelings toward Fickell and stop piling on. There's no point; your wildest fantasy and dream of getting Meyer on board seems to be a 99% certainty. This team needs the extra weeks of practice and needs to go into next season on a positive note.

While I don't disagree that the media frenzy and rumor mills were a distraction, because I am sure they were. I also have to preface this by saying I really do like Fickell and wanted him to succeed because he is 100% Buckeye. Having said that you can say the team was distracted this week because of everything exploding in the media but what about the Purdue game? Nothing like this broke before that. What about the Indiana game? They looked flat all 3 of those weeks and only one of them had these rumors exploding like they did last week. I am not saying there weren't distractions before hand but nothing like this week and they were still flat IMO.

good point. plus, i remember reading something about some controversy up in happy valley. so the distraction excuse is lame.

  • How many guys get a whole year to prove themselves, most of us get a one shot interview and be done. Fickell got dealt a raw deal with the talent being so young without a doubt but if so we wouldn't you go all out and get the fans excited for your style of play instead of being a Tressel clone and relying on a young defense. Why not get Braxton into a flow with screens and slot routes. Very poor playcalling all year long. Fickell maybe a great coach one day who knows but he's not a great coach right now and only a great coach could have led this team this year.

  • Is it me or has this team showed very little improvement from the opening game to now the last game.

Who knows, it may have been Fickell's job to lose after Wisc. If that was the case, I would think it's safe to assume the poor showing against Indiana and the loss at Purdue turned the tide.

The truth is that this team has been distracted since Fickell took over in May for many reasons, and I think it just reached the crescendo against Penn St., where it was too much for the team to overcome. It's ironic that PSU was the killer game for Fickell and I think it's a shame that so many fans and the university itself undermined the guy like they did.

It's all speculation and we will never know for sure. It's my opinion that Fickell was not given a fair shake, which in my mind would have meant giving him the benefit of not only week by week evaluations, but to look at his body of work over a full season. I think we owed him that respect because he is 100% Buckeye as you say. I'm not saying he should have gotten the job or was the best man of the job, he no doubt made some bad judgments this season, I just wanted to see a process where he had a chance.

I think Fickell has a bright future and I hope he gets the chance to be a head coach elsewhere. I further hope he does so well that he makes the OSU look like a bunch of jackasses for getting rid of him.
