Gladwell says ban College Football

  • New Yorker columnist and best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell was already a household name in 2009 when he penned an article audaciously comparing football to dogfighting. Both sports, he said, exploit the loyalty and “gameness” of the participants, exposing them to danger for the entertainment of spectators. The dog-fighting analogy works best in the context of college football, for which the athletes themselves receive no compensation. “It's a bit much both to maim AND exploit college football players,” Gladwell wrote me in an email last week.

sofla, really.....the voice of reason = who'd have thought it

1.) while college players don't collect a check, (scholarship) players get compensated, and 2.) unlike dog-fighting, the players aren't playing against their own will.

Agree. Gladwell is a great writer and thinker.
Boxing, or whatever they call it today, amazes me that it still survives. In football, players sometimes get concussions in pursuit of the goals of the game which are to make touchdowns and score points. In boxing, one way to win is to "knock out" your opponent. The goal of the game is to concuss your opponent. Wow!

Gladwell is an ass at best!

Hell Hitler and Pol Pot were thinkers too, but we ain't listening to those pricks are we? shrug

As long as the money floweth, no one will pay one ounce of attention to this limp wrist, sissy type complaining about this country's greatest sport.

It MUST me a slow period in the world of writing given all the shit that's going on around this world and all this clown can think of is to say "ban college football." Really?

If you banned CFB, dude half the sports in men and women athletics would be canned. The college president's wouldn't be building campus building, college coffers/ endowments would plummet and I bet many schools would be begging from the government for more funding.

Dude is advocating a return to the 1800s and sorry, I ain't interested! I bet most ain't interested as CFB is about business. BIG FRACKIN business. And given these tough times, CFB generates a lot of cash and keeps a ton of schools at or above break even.

So ah, no, ass hole Gladwell. There will be no ban on CFB. Not in this or the next life time!

    no

    gun....ass holes named Malcom Gladwell.

  • CFB is my favorite sport. With that being said, I find the hypocrisy of it all revolting. The NFL needs to do the right thing and establish a minor league in which kids could be paid to play coming out of HS. Those who choose to got to college should not be drafted for 3 years. Same as baseball. It hasn't hurt the game of BB, and it won't kill FB. Sure the game will look much different, but at least we'd get rid of the current system of corruption and greed. The fact that colleges don't want to give up their cash cow, and the NFL doesn't want to spend the money starting a minor league, says a lot about what the sport is all about. $$$$$$$$$$$$$. This should not be the case where colleges are concerned.

    No, but apparently you do?

Maybe we don't really care what Gladwell is saying? Maybe we are okay with our blinders on and don't care about the "sausage making" of football?

Did you ever think about that as a possibility? shrug

Perhaps we are okay with the way things are and aren't receptive to hearing some clown in a suit tell us why we shouldn't want or watch football. Some of us aren't looking for an altruistic approach to football.

This is the same reason why people watched the gladiator sports of past and present. Some of us are okay with the nastiness, blood and guts and understand that someone is likely to get fracked up both on and off the field.

Its football dude. No two bones about it. So Gladwell can stop with the bullshit and leave the sport alone. Plain and simple.

Maybe some on the board don't understand that this perspective exists no matter how many articles that you write, females you introduce into the game and books that are written about the "unfairness" of the business of football.

    Okay. I'm done now.

Can some one call FOX and let them know we found Rush Limbach. He is safe and sound and pontificating on Bucknuts.com
I'm guessing he will need a little valium pick me up soon.

  • Really??? You can get hurt in all sports maybe he should stop writing cause he might hurt his hand and wrist. Wth is up with people should we all just sit in a box all day and be safe STUPID!! Why should these kids not be able to use thier talents. I mean he used his so called talent to write this crap and nobody is wanting to stop him. I hate stupid people even more when they are able to put what they are thinking out there.

  • It used to be legal to feed christins to lions and people liked to watch that too

  • What about all the kids that get to go to college on scholarship that otherwise would not go. Think about all the jobs that are created because of football, these kids on all 3 divisions get to have a chance at earning a degree that will set up their life and their career. Tell me how that's bad? These kids that dont go to the nfl still have a degree to fall back on, and are way better off in life for being able to go to college. Think how that would effect the economy. That's thousands of less people without a degree if college football is canceled, correct? Isn't better to have people go to college with degrees then working at subway or living on welfare? Is their a bunch of greed in college football? Hell yes there is, and that's life. Humans in general have ALWAYS been greedy, so I'm ok with it. I don't feel like I'm being screwed here, it is what it is and I except that. Their greed does create jobs, think about concessions, janators, physical therapists, secretaries, and other support staff of a football program the size of OSU. Isn't that also true?

Glad well certainly has a fair point, as he generally does, but it's certainly extreme. I honestly think he's ignoring the greatest issue, it's voluntary and people chose to compete for a wide variety of reasons. It's the hope to make money later, the scholarship, the comraderie, the way playing college sports helps in the job search. Most kids get a net positive out of college sports whether or not they make big dollars playing that sport. I'll likely have extensive medical issues when i'm older, but I would never take back that experience.

Wow! I think you are referring to that fat, dope, drug addict, traitor muthfracka Rush Limbaugh? Na, not in the least.

I don't think I have ever been compared nor confused with that traitor. Frack 'em and his entire family. Would love to put a bullet in him. gun

The only thing I have in common with that prick is that we are both originally from the state of Missouri. I detest that dude big time and he's about the only person that I wish real bad things (physical injury) on. But I digress.

I will be glad when someone writes an article that says leave our football alone.
Remove the bullshit, kick out all the women and stop wearing pink at the games.

Sick of ESPN and the likes putting chicks in the game simply because they are cute. Football was better when the guys could claim it as their own and not have to see
"booth babes" commenting on football when its clear they don't know what the frack
    they are talking about.

The way I read it, Gladwell is saying that big time college football is not consistent with vision of university education. Also, it's really dangerous. He's talking reality when he talks about injuries. He's talking "the way things should be in his mind" when he suggests that college football should be banned. High School, College, and even Pro Football is such a part of our social fabric that none of it is going to be banned in our lifetimes. I believe he acknowledges that at the end of the interview. It's wishful thinking on his part at best.

    Progressive society? Really?

Have you not been paying attention to one of the biggest frackin stories of the year?
What about the word "progressive" and the ability to shoot unarmed teenagers
    confuses you?

You may live in a progressive enclave with Starbucks coffee, "smart" cars and shit like that, but the vast majority of people don't live in anything like what you describe.

In some places people are still flying the Confederate flag, crawling in bunkers after shooting their families and listening to guys like traitor ass Rush Limbaugh.

Still confused why you call this a "progressive" society? shrug

I suggest you do a tour of our country and look around to see just what the frack is goin' on in the REAL world. Hell some of our citizens are still arguing as to whether the Voting Rights of '65 was a "good thing", as if it even needs to be debated.

Rethuglicans are trying to keep people from voting and you call this place a progressive society. Na, not in the least my friend.

    no

And yes, I know I just commented on not having women in football, but so what?
I never claimed to believe that we live in a progressive society as some things are just best left alone.

Na Dude I ain't mad. I am "Nasty", hence the name.

Just tired of people screwing (or at least trying) with the game dude. That's all.

If Gladwell doesn't like it, then he can walk away and go do/ watch something else.

That's all. We live in the US (not a progressive US) and there are other choices. He should
