Here's the whole story about ESPN suing Ohio State

  • ESPN won't be happy until they destroy the Ohio State Football program!!

COLUMBUS, Ohio — ESPN asked the Ohio Supreme Court on Monday to release "all e-mails, letters and memos" to and from former football coach Jim Tressel, Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee and others that mentioned Pennsylvania businessman Ted Sarniak.

Sarniak was a mentor to former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor whom Pryor reached out to before he left the team in June.

According to the lawsuit, ESPN asked for all e-mails involving Sarniak since March 15, 2007, that were from Tressel, Gee, Ohio State director of NCAA compliance Doug Archie and athletic director Gene Smith.

WEB EXTRA: Read The Complaint (PDF File) | SPECIAL SECTION: OSU NCAA Investigation

It also asked for all documents that were forwarded to the NCAA since Jan. 1, 2010, related to an investigation of Tressel, along with a list of people who were officially barred from student-athlete game tickets since Jan. 1, 2007 and all correspondence between the NCAA and Archie or any other Ohio State athletic department official related to any violation of NCAA rules since Jan. 1, 2005.

ESPN's court filing said that the university wrongfully denied its request for records.

The university told ESPN that the request was overly broad and may have involved student privacy issues, 10 Investigates' Paul Aker reported.

10 Investigates has also had numerous requests that have been in the works for weeks and months, Aker reported.

If ESPN's suit is successful, Ohio State could have to turn over the records and pay ESPN's legal fees.

The university was not available for an immediate comment.

  • ESPN is getting out of control.

Where they part of the Casey Anthony trial as well.

Remember the days when ESPN just showed sporting events, those same days when MTV played music videos.

  • If nothing else now it's time for OSU powers at be to take the Offensive and challenge ESPN. They are doing this because they have no fear of Legal ramifications from Ohio State thus far. Now it's time to use our considerable legal resources to our advantage. They are doing this because they're so called investigations have proved NOTHING!! more then what has already been discussed. It's just they're way of trying to create more buzz at our expense with additional negativity..Things have been very quiet on the bash OSU front from our detractors, ESPIN I'm sure will tell all the usual subjects, May, Ware, Bayless, Howard to pump this bogus suit up and restart the National OSU bashing. They are pathetic at this point, truly pathetic and sad. Where is there hard hitting story into Oregon or UNC? Their negative bias towards the Buckeyes is no more apparent and clear now. They are making it personal, time to go after them legally they way we go after our opponents especially TSUN on the field. "Mr Nice Guy" has run it's course. You want to pick a fight now you've got one ESPIN....O-H!!!!

  • Thanks, once again IB,Where is Andy Gieger when we need him ?,Remember after the Clarett BS in 2003,Gieger didn't allow Gameday on Campus for the scUM game?ESPN needs to go away, and Gene Smith needs to grow some Kahunas...this is 2003 all over again...A STRAIGHT VENDETTA for some reason...TOSU is BIGGER than ESPIN and they will find out...that dude at Ch. 10 has lost his mind also,he's pissing up a rope and his time in Cbus is running out fast...and by the way today it's 2789 days since TOSU lost a game to scUM...so whoever the other 8 or 9 kids that are followers and thinking bout going there Good Luck To Ya..see ya Nov 26th,for another ASS WHOOPING....OHIO STATE STYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I guess we just hope that everything is legit and there is nothing to hide. I have to believe that the NCAA has combed through all of that stuff and it's all cool so I can't imagine what ESPN's hardon is for it.

Agree 100%. Don't forget Sports Illustrated, which published that crazy story based off of their one unnamed source... The big thing about ESPN is that they are also the SEC Network and that bias is playing into their campaign as well...

  • Just remember to ban all Disney products and all TV sponsors of ABC and ESPIN. If you have the time, email or call them or their advertisers and tell them so. And/or start a petition saying the same.

  • so ESPN is now the governing body of the NCAA? Wow their arrogance is profound. I am glad I have XM radio and can pick up the DP show. At least he has a reasonable take on the issues most of the time.

  • you see these type of requests and subsequent lawsuits all the time with news operations.

My question is what is OSU trying to hide with the emails and other info. ESPN and the other outlets (Plain Dealer, WBNS-TV and the Dispatch being a few of them) are just doing their job as a news operation. If there is nothing to hide, then give them the info. I, as a concerned alum, deserve to know and want to know.

I could be wrong, but it's not a matter of them wanting to "hide" anything from ESPN; rather they want to protect student's security. No university should have to divulge student's personal information to a media source.

i don't think any personal info is the crux of the problem, that can be blacked out.

It's the principle of the matter though. If there was information pertinent to the investigation surely it was already shared with the NCAA. A sports-media group like ESPN has no place demanding this kind of information.

hypothetical here but maybe they know something is in those emails, which would explain why they want them so bad. Could be wrong. But I don't think ESPN would just sue to create buzz or on a whim.

The NCAA already had full access to it. ESPN's reasoning is not unlike a scorned ex-girlfriend just looking for retribution.

I was thinking the same thing tonight about ESPN and MTV. I loved both of them back when they first came out just showing re-runs of football games and music videos....they were great.

    Now they both suck....suck....suck.
