I certainly hope the Bucks are since they have nothing else to do at this point.
This is an improved team and lest we forget that when we came off our last undefeated season ('02) how they came in here the next season in our opener and gave us about all we could handle. We escaped with a 16-13 win which caused us to drop slightly in the polls.
I expect for them to come in here again much like UCF, Cal and UAB to try and knock us off in the Shoe. Traveling over 2,500 miles east and playing earlier than usual won't phase them just as it didn't Cal. I'm watching their Bowl matchup vs a physical BYU and how they're holding their own on both sides of the ball.
We should be concerned-- very concerned--esp if we begin another season as sluggishly as we have been doing for most of the past five seasons now. We need to be cocked, locked, loaded and ready to roll right out of the gate against these Aztecs because they're more than capable!
I really think we'll be better prepared next year for the early matchups. The offense is installed and they have a year of experience in it. Hopefully the young guys on the DL are ready to rock n roll. We have new offensive playmakers. Next year we should be even better than this year. But I know what you're saying. I'm sure they will not take SDSU lightly. They are a good team.
It would be a horrible thing if OSU stumbled out of the gate against the Aztecs next year. Of course, the Buckeyes will be fired up and not likely to let that happen. Anyway, I am not one to dismiss San Diego State lightly. Compared to most of our OOC games, they could be a dangerous team and easily underestimated.
We need to be ready and come out playing well from the start. Without the bowl practices this will not be quite as certain but hopefully OSU won't be too rusty.
We open at home against Buffalo so we'll have a game to work out some of the kinks in our system. They open at home against Eastern Illinois. Say want you want about Buffalo but I have to believe a 4-8 MAC team that won 3 of its last 4 poses a stiffer challenge than a 7-5 FCS team that lost its last two and was blown out 52-21 by Western Michigan, a team Buffalo beat 29-24.
But I'm not taking SDSU lightly by any means. They have a competent backup coming back at QB who should start (he started against BYU and was terrible: 12/29, 3 INTs, 2 for TDs), a 1400-yard rusher and 3 of their top 4 receivers back.
