  • Has committed to the Buckeyes as well. Somehow this one went under the radar, but he is on board too. Welcome to the Buckeyes family, young man.

  • With Neal and Anzalone, I think we may have seen the end of Tim Kimbrough's chances of being a Buckeye, possibly Jaylon Smith's, too.

    iowabuckeyes

  • Whether or not Jaylon ends up a Buckeyes depends entirely on what he wants. Obviously they will hold a spot for him for as long as he needs in order to decide.

    Iowa:

Really? Don't you think that Smith is the kid that you "save one for?"

I think so. He's a top dude, but maybe the staff knows that he's been smelling up Kelly's butt at ND and decided to move on? shrug

    Interesting point either way.

First, I need to clarify something: I was on Scout's page when I saw Neal's commitment and Scout has him listed a MLB but Rivals and 247 have him as a DE. He seems short for a WDE at a JT Moore-like 6-1 or 6-2, which is Neal's listed height. So I was thinking he's an MLB, which is what Kimbrough plays. So what is Neal? An MLB or a WDE? We have Jamal Marcus sort of in the same 'tweener category.

I agree that Jaylon's a guy you'd hold a scholarship for but the fact is we're fast running out. We can only put 82 pounds in our 82# bag. That's all it will hold.

  • funny iowa, I was thinking the same when I saw the Bosa commit.
these commits are FANTASTIC, but you'd have to think Urb has a list within a list - meaning what happens when it comes down to the last few spots and someone he really wants is on the outside??

Exactly--this is like a Rubik's Cube. The more it comes together, the fewer moves you should have to make but that's also when the puzzle can get the toughest to solve if the pieces don't fall into place the way you want them to. The pieces that still haven't fallen into place are Jaylon, Green, Shelton, Treadwell, Isaac, Foster, and North. Not to mention any more OLs.

I my mind's eye, I see a spreadsheet that Mark Pantoni manages that's filled with names that are colored-coded based on OSU's level of interest (Committed, Hot, Warm, Cool, Cold) that get constantly shuffled around, moved from one column and row to another until the final picture finally comes together.

We have 13. Once we go past 16, which is the scholarships we officially have to give to the 2013 kids right now, that's when we'll know roster attrition is going to play a much bigger role.

Officially, by my count, we have 3 to give. We have 81 on scholarship now. We are allowed 82. So that's 1 still to give, plus 15 seniors. That's 16. We have 13 now.

Every commit we go past 16, that's when someone will have to go to keep us at 82 next year.

I'll defer to anyone who sees it differently.

This is correct. It's a bit alarming assuming we get Heuerman this week and we still NEED a couple wr's and o lineman. Not to mention that we would like to hold spots open for guys like Smith and Von Bell.

I am sorry but I don't understand - please explain how we can give the one we don't use this year next year when we are not allowed to go over the 82 limit. Thank you.

We are at 81 now excluding the graduating seniors and including all the incoming freshmen. This means 81 on the roster during the season. We will then have 15 seniors graduate next year which will leave us with 16 to give for the 2013 class. We will likely have 2 to 4 more than that as well due to attrition and early NFL departures.

I'm not sure about the wisdom of taking Neal over Kimbrough or Smith if indeed they take no more linebacker/DL types in this class. But they don't pay me to evaluate high school recruits and hand out offers so I will just trust the guys who do that for a living!

Like Boom said, to be able to rotate. I imagine one thing Meyer is taking into consideration also is that this offense is going to be a very fast-paced offense, meaning they will run a lot of plays and in many cases, score faster than an offense that huddles and takes a full 30-35 seconds to snap the ball. So when you consider that, you have to remember that the defense is going to be on the field that much more often. The DL is the area that will get tired quicker, so Meyer wants to be able to rotate 3 and 4 guys in at every spot on the line to keep from putting a tired defense out on the field.
