Luke reprises former role; but still gets NO love.

  • New season, yet old feelings abound. I said it last year and I'll say it now - Shame on all you Fickell haters!
Some of you just simply can't help yourselves. What did you expect the guy to do, turn down the HC job last year?
Christ, get over it! The guy's clearly a Buckeye, through and through!

It's a new season, full of optimism - ENJOY IT!

For that matter, let's cool on the Tressel venom too!

  • atleast Shazier appears to like him...

“Coach Fickell seems like he’s really adjusting to it very well,” Shazier said of Fickell’s new role. “He doesn’t seem like he’s got any problems. He’s teaching us everything we know so we can be the best linebackers. He still has the same attitude. He’s still pushing everybody the way he always does.”

  • I don't think anyone hated Fickell the person, but it was obvious he was way over his head and making game time decisions that were costing us the game. Let him coach defense, thats where he's more comfortable.

  • Fick will be a good coach one day. You can't judge his head coaching prowess from last season. You don't really believe Fick had authority to change the OC do you? He was told Bollman was going to run the offense - last season was doomed and Gene Smith knew it. Fick took one for the University, knowing it was to late for a coaching search.

It all worked out in the end, he gets to learn a different coaching style from another NC head coach.

    Go Fick, Go Bucks!

I hated everyone on Gameday last year, including myself. I would have liked to see some fire out of Fickell. At least he could have flipped off Bollman, up in the booth. The guy was thrown into the fire and survived. I give him credit for that. Im not looking for him to Brian Kelly or Bo Pellini, but at least show some emotion.

  • Not that I'm in any position to be offering coach Fick career advice, but Fick needs to go to a MAC school and be a D1 head coach for awhile. The guy is all buckeye, and I'd like for him to be our head coach some day. But he needs to start building his resume as a head coach.

But I'm sure he makes a high six digit salary working as a D coordinator, so maybe he's not interested in being a head coach.

    Go Fick, Go Bucks!

I thought he was a defensive coach ... The defense that was always taking wrong angles ... Getting gashed by rex burkhead ... Also continuously putting bauserball in there ...

Probably me. I'm not a fan, I was hoping for a fresh start this year and thought he should have gone with the balance of the staff. I don't hate...I don't have hate for anyone Scarlet & Grey, however he's a holdover from the biggest mess in this school's history.

I never thought he should have been put in the position even though we didn't have much choice given the circumstances. Part of me still feels that there are a few players that look at him a little differently after last season (returning players), it's just human nature. I appreciate his Ohio roots and devotion, it's just bigger than that to me.

Never satisfied with ineptness as hc and their record last year ...under no circumstance is that acceptable

Again, Bolls was in charge of the offense.

As for the defense, even you have to admit last years linebackers weren't the best at recognizing proper coverage - Klein seemed lost out on the field. Sweat was good but running behind a lot of plays (injured). Shazier was awesome but by his own admission - he ran past or through plays. D-line play was good - Johnny & Hank did very well but needed consistent help (Nate?) Backfield played fair if not good, a lot injuries back there...

  • As far as Joey is concerned, he was put in when Brax was flattened a few times if I remember correctly. Joey did what he could, he wasn't a starter and the OC had no plan on how to use him.

Tress resigned on memorial day, under fire....who was going to be hc?
Luke stood up for this team....something a few of you fans need to learn!

Its not Joe Bausermans fault. He did what he could. tOSU should have a 2nd string QB, that can complete a pass. Guiton or Graham had to be able to complete a pass. If you have 3 backup QB's on the roster that cant complete a pass at tOSU, there is a problem. Put Guiton or Graham in there. Whats the worst that can happen? They also throw into someones popcorn?

I don't disagree at all with your statement.

I dont know that is on Fick though. I think the OC has to call plays to build the backups confidence. Again, Stoney could possibly be the best TE in football but we wouldn't know it because after the 2nd game I don't know if his number was ever called!

    AikenBucknutz

  • I believe Fickell was hamstrung from the get-go. He was dealt a bad hand off a stacked deck. Where was he going to find a competent OC not only on two month's notice (remember: Tressel quit on Memorial Day) but with only a 6-month contract? Because there were no guarantees, no job security for anyone on that staff. I'm guessing they were all updating their resumes. He would have had to hire someone with nothing to lose. 64 year old Walt Harris, who's enjoying retirement in Pittsburgh after coaching at California (or Pennsylvania in 2010) may have been the only guy...and two months wouldn't have given him any kind of time to learn a playbook, the players, etc. So everyone played it safe. No one wanted to switch horses in mid-stream.

Same with Withers at UNC. And look at Arkansas, which temporarily made Taver Johnson interim HC (who had just been hired a few weeks earlier himself) when Petrino was fired, then brought back John L. Smith, who was Petrino's ST coach for the previous 3 seasons before going to Weber State as HC, only to quit that job to come back to Arkansas. He's got a 10-month deal. But at least he's been an HC before, managed a staff, been in the hot seat....plus he's been on the job since April. If Gene Smith had hired anyone as HC other than someone already on the staff, he might've been run out of town tarred and feathered on a rail.

I would love to hear what Fickell would say he'd have done differently if he had to do it all over again. What lessons did he learn? The hardest steel is forged in the hottest fire, just as winners find ways to learn and grow from adversity and failure. I doubt firing Bollman and Siciliano would be on his list because I don't really believe he had that green light from Gene Smith. I think, though, that he would say he would have been more aggressive, would have coached to win. That was Fick's problem, he coached passively as if he was playing not to lose and in the end, he did anyway. It was a painful learning experience but I'm sure he's a he's a better man and a coach as a result of it.
