I don't see the sport slowing, I lived in Ohio and every BW3 or other bar that is airing the fights is packed for the fights. I was just out of High School in '93 and loved it. I was estatic to see it regain it's momentum and become more mainstream. I got hooked on the reality series TUF as well. I will say i am not a big fan of the move to Fox so far, just don't care much for the announcers. I also agree with Bri, the prelims are where it is at right now. Guys just going all out and busting each other up. that is what it is all about!!!

By the way, why are you posting non football threads on the football board??? the title is around the shoe, don't you all get it?? JK, i got busted up by some clowns for talking bball on here last week.

I'm just trying to help get the board rolling again. Its all good

I wrestled a long time ago but no jui jitsu, they have all types of classes that you can just jump right in and join though. I'm not even joining to get a career in MMA but rather for the workout cause it's like 2nd to no one. I was gonna compete in body competitions cause my workouts were hardcore a few years ago but the past few years i've really not been motivated to be hardcore and my workouts have been lacking so i wanted to join to get my ass busted and push myself to the maximum. But within the past week and a half i've changed my diet and already lost weight and feeling more aggressive so i'm gonna keep the trend up cause i really just wanna get back to when i had like no body fat at all(not exaggerating). But i still have very fast hands. Oh cool, does your' grandpa still live in Vegas?

Unfortunately, he passed away in '92. My grandma use to play the banjo in the early 40s in Vegas, grandpa threw down the game when he was in town for a fight and that's how this whole thing got started.

I'd love to do MMA for the fitness, but I'm too concerned with my back. I herniated my L5-S1 disc 10 years ago, and I want no part of surgery. I can't squat or deadlift anymore it pretty much sucks.

Sorry to hear that man. My grandfather passed away Sept 13, 2002. A few months after i graduated high school and it was friday the 13th...what a day huh. Oh that's pretty neat then. Yeah you definitely wanna stay away from anything laboring like that cause pretty soon it'll be hard for you to even get your socks on in the morning. All these guys trying to lift insane amount of weights are screwing themselves over in their' elder years cause they're gonna be having serious knee and back issues that walking is gonna be a task. I don't do anything anymore that i think will affect me later down the road

The original injury was an annular tear which I did playing football. When I graduated high school I was 198lbs, coach wanted me to add weight and move to SLB in college. I was 227lbs during spring ball. I think all of the ridiculous squatting stated the cascade, but I felt it go when I smacked the TE in practice. My right leg went numb, and my football career was over. I went 6 months without being able to put on my own socks. I couldn't even carry my own books, my girlfriend had to carry them for two semesters.

You're a smart man. Save your body, you need to use it the rest of your life. No one gives a crap how much weight you lifted when you were 20 years old.

Did you have surgery on the back codexp2? If not, and you're still in pain, try the reverse hyper extension machine, It's a miracle worker for the lower back. I started experiencing lumbar pain in my early 20's, and this has worked great for me over the years.

I absolutely agree about saving your joints. My shoulder is so arthritic from the years of lifting, and work I'll probably need it replaced soon. Stay away from heavy benching young people!

Man, that must have sucked. I'm sure you had thoughts going through your head the whole 6 months like "Is this what should be happening to a young guy at my age?" Coaches can also be hazards cause they only care about how their' team is, i don't think they look out for the best benefit of the player.

Couldn't have said it any better! It does nothing but pad the ego, that practically sums it up. Some guys just don't realize the damage being done to tendons and bones from all of that heavy weight and awkward workouts, they only see the "now" benefit. And God forbid if they're on some supplements cause most of that stuff messes with your' heart and liver. Gold's gym has the majority of people that are gonna struggle later on in life

I know so many people whose shoulders are shot from lifting. My business partner just turned 40 and his present, a torn labrum on his birthday. Luckily, Dr. Lee from the Diamond Backs pieced him back together. If you ever have a shoulder done find the ortho in your area that's a team doctor for an MLB team. It may take a while to get in, but trust me on this one!

I didn't have surgery on my back. I was told to wait until I couldn't tolerate the pain anymore. That happened in '97 and the tear eventually herniated, but I can still stand it. Although I don't practice, I'm a internist by trade. I keep up with medical advances. The surgeries are 10x better today than they were a decade ago. There's been several promising trials on disc regeneration using MSCs (stem cells) in goats. I'm hoping in the next decade we something more viable than spinal fusion.

BTW, I love the reverse hyper!

I thought I strained a muscle. I didn't even cross my mind I might have screwed myself up forever. I tried to tough it out. I went straight to the weight room the next day, I couldn't even get out of the car. I still made it through my workout. I waited three months before I gave in and went for a MRI. I eventually moved back home and went to community college and finished up at OSU.

I'm with you 100 percent. Anytime I see some young dude throw 495 on the squat rack barely bend his knees, maintain terrible form with too much flexion in their low back, I cringe. I've offered my opinion before, but like me at their age, they don't want to listen. I'm just some old jackass.

This should be posted at every gym, but I'd wager a bet it'd be torn down within the hour. Youth is wasted on the young right? biggrin

Young guys don't want no part of wisdom. I try to spread it whenever i'm training someone. The advise goes in one ear and out the other

  • Man I love this thread!! I was and sort of still am a huge boxing fan. Ali's rope-a-dope...wow!! I remember the superfights with Leonard, Hagler, Hearns and Duran. I remember watching a young devastating kid named Mike Tyson destroy everything in front of him. What about Kevin Kelly getting smashed for 11 rds and knocking out his opponent in the 12th. Or a young Mosley fighting SIX times in one year trying to catch Oscar. The fight where Roy Jones was DQ'd and came back in the next fight to beat Griffin in like 30 secs. What about Floyd all 5'5'' of him (joking) taking it to the late Diego Corrales who was like 6'2''.

With all that said....I fell head over heels for MMA. Some of their matchups seem bad but these guys take a beating. At first I was drawn to the instant KO's and submissions but once you really get into the technical side of things it becomes so much more interesting. As the sport has evolved you have seen some of the greats leave because they have not evolved. (see BJ Penn)

Like many of you I think the overload of PPV is watering things down, but you can't knock their hustle.

I guess we would be too dangerous if we had both youth and wisdom at the same time. The women of the world wouldn't stand a chance.

You wouldn't believe half of the stuff that Floyd gets into out here in Vegas. He's always in some incident by attacking someone or having his goons do it. He's had like 2 or 3 incidents in the recent and was sentenced but they gave him a suspended sentence so he could set up the fight with Pacquio but now that totally fell through and he's fighting someone else. What kind of justice is that? I've been over to his gym and met Roger Mayweather and all but i'm not a fan of Floyd's. He's not a graceful champion and he's handpicked his fights throughout his career and dodged the best while they were at the top of their' game and chose to fight em when they were washed up

    Ohioz Finezt

  • Yep, a judge actually pushed his sentence back so he could make $10 mil.

    What an effin joke.

  • Good topic!

It's a VERY popular sport here in Indianapolis. American Top Team has a gym here. While I dont train MMA, before my back surgery I trained VERY heavily (4x week) in Muay Thai kickboxing, which is used A LOT in MMA. I just wanted to try it out, and I was hooked. It's very rewarding if you put the time and effort into it. I trained at the Indianapolis Martial Arts club for a year, but didnt like the "corporate structure" if you will. I moved to a smaller gym, with BETTER trainers (shamar bailey of the UFC trains here when in town) and LOVED it!

I'm trying REALLY REALLY hard to get back to it. A LOT of physical therapy and etc....I want to train and golf...thats it! LOL

If anyone is on the fence about it, PM me I can give ya some details Muay Thai related...start up costs, gear costs, ETC...

Great sport! I just don't like getting hit anymore. I knew it was over when my girlfriend put me on my butt. Did your surgeon place any long-term restrictions on your return to training?

I had a multi-level fusion and It's the best thing I've ever done...He said I'll beable to go back to full go in about 3 more months. He said it will be up to me on activites..some will be fine, some will hurt, but training he said initially will hurt because of time i took off and not to confuse that with actual spine pain. So we'll see.
