Meyer, The transition, The Buckeyes.

  • This isnt a motivational talk, a rant, or anything like that. Just kinda a thought if you will...I'm 100% Buckeye no matter what, but I read through these posts and wonder about others. Prior to the season MOST agreed this is a transition year with Urban (he still mostly has tressel players, and lets be honest...they dont fit his system) and look at us at linebacker, we're as thin as can be.

    Urban Meyer knows what he's doing, and thats why you dont see him losing his cool, firing people, or anything like that, because the man knows. This is OHIO STATE, his players are coming, his system is coming, TITLES are coming.

    WE are 8-0 fellas, 8-0. How many of you SERIOUSLY thought that coming in? I know I didnt. I had us at 6-2 right now (L's to MSU, NEB) and I had us losing at WISC. So, to be 8-0 is a huge bonus.

    The kids are playing hard, lets just stay behind them let the transition complete, and look out nation.

    GO BUCKS!!!

    true, but lets also be fair. It sure helps that we played an easy nonconf schedule and that we play in the big ten. Can you say we would be 8-0 in the Pac 10, SEC or Big 12.

    Good post. Most predictions seemed to be in the 10-2 realm, but that might go to expected higher quality of competition as much as attributing anything to Meyer.

    It's awesome to be 8-0, but we need to keep in mind who we have beaten...

    Miami Oh 3-4, no quality wins, but not a horrible team;
    UCF 5-2, beat East Carolina & Southern Miss, turning out to be a respectable team;
    Cal 3-5, beat UCLA, again not a horrible team, but definitely underachievers;
    UAB 1-6, still surprising they hung with us;
    Mich St. 4-4, beat Boise St., respectable team that plays good defense, but is too predicable on offense, kind of like PSU was under Paterno;
    Neb 5-2, beat Wisc, NW, & Southern Miss, TOSU's signature victory over a pretty erratic team;
    Indiana 2-5, no quality wins, but does appear to have a decent offense; &
    Purdue 3-4, no quality wins, definite underachiever who nearly turned their season around last night.

    The combined record of our opponents is 26-32. Not counting their losses to TOSU, they would be 26-24, slightly over 500 with a small smattering of quality wins. This is not an impressive list of teams.

    But regardless of who you play, it is impressive to go unbeaten, especially in a transitional year when you are installing some new systems. But I'm not ready to break out the champaign just yet. We will need to improve to get road wins at PSU and Wisconsin. Michigan will be the best offensive team we will face the entire season.

  • Well said, and needs to be said. There is way too much negativity on the boards (and I am guilty as well). Is there really anything to be negative about when you are undefeated? Even if we never let a team score a point against us, and we scored 70 points a game. There would still be room for improvement. Just like now, there is room for improvement. I could care less if every team we played scored 70 points, as long as we scored 71. Be very careful when you start wishing for talent over heart. A team with talent is easier to beat than a team with heart. If this is YOUR team, then praise them in victory and praise them more in defeat. GO BUCKS!! ALWAYS the #1 team in my heart and my mind. Call me a hommer, I could give a shit less woot

  • Absolutely, plus one for all Buckeye fans in this thread for great posts. Props to the players and coaches for hanging in during a REALLY tough situation yesterday.

    Razorback

  • I'm as happy as anyone we are undefeated. What a turn around and improvement from last year. But in all honesty, we haven't played anyone and we are no where close to an elite team. To say we are undefeated implies we are elite, and we are not.

    Naw bro, we know what time it is and who the Buckeyes are...we are just fans who are a little tired of all the bashing. We know the B1G is down and our OOC schedule didnt have any marquee names. We just want to the fans to sound more like we are 8-0 and
    less like 0-8. Undefeated may mean elite to you, but for me it means that we are okay, and not as bad as everyone likes to make us sound. Elite is a ways off, everyone understands that. I want Buckeye fans to enjoy the here and now for what it is, and stop looking down the road and always waiting for elite to get here before you can enjoy our team. Undefeated is just that...no losses. Enjoy it while we can. No hate, much love...

    absolutbuckeye

  • I understand what all of you are saying, and right now...no we're not an ELITE team, but were we supposed to be? At this point? Absolutely not.

    Tornado;

    Absolutely not, but remember in my initial post I said I thought we would be 6-2 in the BIG, so of course I dont think we would be 8-0 in the sec, big 12...but the fact is, we're not in that conference.

    My point of the whole thing is this....Urban Meyer has complete control of what is going on, and he knows this is a transiton. The fact we are playing fullbacks and DE's at LB says a little about whats going on.

    What matters is this...we're 8-0 and on 8 saturdays we've been better that who we have played. Thats all you can do, win the games you play and despite injuries, negativity, transition, etc...we're right there.

    What we're all failing to realize is we're becoming a FAMILY, something we did not have last year..this is the perfect scenario as we're playing for PRIDE and we arent laying down. Yesterday, our players could have laid down and said..."we cant play in a bowl anyways, we're beat" but didnt.

    The culture is changing here and it's gonna be a FUN ride....just be patient guys!!

  • I still don't understand why people are getting all bent out of shape about our team and record. The best we can do this year is win a Leaders Trophy, so why are we wasting so much time worrying about the polls, etc. Let's just take one game at a time and hope that everyone plays beyond their potential in a few of these last games. GO BUCKS!!

  • great post here, yes we are 8-0, and i would rather be a mediocre 8-0 than be 5-3 . while yes we are not elite by any stretch of the imagination, we are beating equal competition, and comming from where we were last year, I will take it. as far as all the negative comments on the board, I am as guilty as anyone. it is because we are buckeyes, and expect greatness, and our defense has always been our strength, and so we expect it every year.just think, we are only starting to see what this team is going to become,

    signature image signature image signature image

    ncbuckeye2

  • I understand expecting greatness, as I do too....but we also need to be realistic and step back and look the the transition stage, the injuries, and and back our buckeyes.

    Everyone has valid points on this thread, which iswhat I was hoping for..good discussion.

  • the real question to consider, and it may be more complicated than people think, is: is it better to win eight or more games and play the way we have played with the players who have played; or would it have been better to play some of the guys like guiton to give them some game time to get them ready for next year and for emergencies like miller getting hurt?
    i don't have an answer but i think all the hoopla about being 8-0 when most of the games have shown some serious deficiencies on both offense and defense don't suggest that we will be better next year just because we won a lot of games this year.
    the psychological benefits of winning after a losing season last year and winning with new coaches and a new offense have to be measured against continuing to make the same errors like playing too soft on defense and having a quarterback who really is a poor or average passer at best.(yes, he is a terrific scrambler and a great runner)
    again i think this a fairly complicated question. being 8-0 or 12-0 this year means nothing next year if we are still playing this inconsistently. i want the best for the team when it counts next year and in the future and i would measure the success of this year on what it helps us do next year.

    There is no real question to consider in my opinion. This is very simple; you play to win, not to lose. I am happy to be 8-0, and it would be fantastic to go 12-0. Every team has some deficiencies and there is always room to improve, but 12-0 is a perfect record, you can't do any better as far as the bottom line.

    You seem to be contradicting yourself. If you played Guiton to get him experience, how is Miller going to get reps throwing the ball? I think we all agree Miller needs to get comfortable running the offense, which includes many short, timing type of throws where his accuracy needs to improve. That ain't happenin if he's on the bench.

    As per earlier post, 12-0 this year may mean alot due to the weak schedules this year and next. Meyer is not going to let this team rest on its laurels if this is what you are concerned about. He is way too smart and experienced to let that happen.

    I agree with you, I mean like I stated earlier...Urban will make the moves he needs to make. If that includes letting fickel go, or moving him to a positions only coach, he will.

    Urban is not going to fire anyone in the middle of the season. He's not going to do anything to create any side stories, especially when this team is undefeated.

    If Fickell is fired after the season, so be it. But "now" simply isn't going to happen.

  • Good original post. Sometimes we lose sight of the forest for the trees. (or something like that)

    Here's the tricky thing. Would it surprise any of us if we lost three of the next four games and finished 9-3? I doubt it. Yet, would it surprise anyone if we ran the table and finished 12-0? This team seems very fragile. I hope the injuries and overcoming the adversity makes us stronger but I can just as easily see our good luck turn bad.

    I think we all are thrilled to be undefeated right now but we also know our football and see that we are not elite by any stretch of the imagination. In our linebacking unit, we have subs for our subs getting hurt. Let's hold our breath and enjoy the ride while we can.

    You are with out a doubt the most depressing member of this board. We are 8-0. We have no control at this point how good or bad the teams are on our schedule. You play the hand you're dealt. We don't play in another league so why continue to bring it up?

    +1

    Don't acknowledge anything he posts....he's not deserving of the recognition.

    There's a good reason he's been banned countless times. He's not wanted here at all....yet keeps coming back with dozens of new screen names.....probably because he's desperate for attention....so don't give him any.

    I mean who in their right frickin' mind would post a comment like that on a thread like this? He obviously can't enjoy anything at all positive. There's always a negative dig he likes to throw in there because he knows it's going to stir up the pot, annoy people and in return he gets what he wants.

    Stop giving him the satisfaction.

    Yes, but everything Tornado said was true. I know we don't have any control over who we play, but we should be beating the hell out of the sh*tty teams we are playing. This season has been fun and it's great improvement from last year, but we are still a long way from being on par with Bama, LSU, Florida, Oregon, etc. .

    I'm really trying hard to enjoy this season, but it just makes me cringe when we give up 49 points to freaking Indiana, and we almost lose to an awful Purdue team at home. Defensively this OSU team is so awful its infuriating.

    We should be a long way from being on par with these teams and if anyone thought we would be close just because Urban is here then they were looking through rose colored glasses. Give it a few recruiting classes and some time to get his system installed and we hopefully will be. I figured we wouldnt be much better then last year no matter what conference we play in so Im happy this year with where we are. I expected to be a bit better on defense but i see the limitations we have LBer.
