We should be a long way from being on par with these teams and if anyone thought we would be close just because Urban is here then they were looking through rose colored glasses. Give it a few recruiting classes and some time to get his system installed and we hopefully will be. I figured we wouldnt be much better then last year no matter what conference we play in so Im happy this year with where we are. I expected to be a bit better on defense but i see the limitations we have LBer.

What the hell does it matter?
We can't win the conference. We can't go to a bowl game. In what way is making that comment remotely constructive?
We know where we are as a conference. The only thing our Buckeyes can do is win games. Why even worry about something of which you have absolutely zero control over?
I wouldn't say it's the truth that is pi$$ing people off as much as it is a debbie downer making a negative comment about everything.
Who the fu_k cares about that stupid $hit!! That was a thrilling come from behind win to save a loss on the season....a season where truthfully no one (no one who understands how difficult transitions can be) realistically thought this team would be in a position to be where they are.
Do you even have a clue how hard it is to go undefeated when you have an elite team? From the sound of it I doubt it.....

I would say the same thing right back to you. Why the hell does it matter?
If people come on here and say "We are undefeated", and you have someone like Tornado that comes on and posts the facts underlying the reason why we are undefeated, who cares, why does it matter?
Your going to slam a guy for pointing out the facts? I really don't understand that.

This isnt a motivational talk, a rant, or anything like that. Just kinda a thought if you will...I'm 100% Buckeye no matter what, but I read through these posts and wonder about others. Prior to the season MOST agreed this is a transition year with Urban (he still mostly has tressel players, and lets be honest...they dont fit his system) and look at us at linebacker, we're as thin as can be.
Urban Meyer knows what he's doing, and thats why you dont see him losing his cool, firing people, or anything like that, because the man knows. This is OHIO STATE, his players are coming, his system is coming, TITLES are coming.
WE are 8-0 fellas, 8-0. How many of you SERIOUSLY thought that coming in? I know I didnt. I had us at 6-2 right now (L's to MSU, NEB) and I had us losing at WISC. So, to be 8-0 is a huge bonus.
The kids are playing hard, lets just stay behind them let the transition complete, and look out nation.
GO BUCKS!!!

The issue to me isn't the fact that we're 8-0. Sure it's great especially when you consider that one year ago this time we already had three losses.
What is an issue for me however is the fact that outside of Braxton and the OL, I've seen very little improvement from key starters on this roster from one year to the next. Forget about the injuries because long before those had occured, this was a glaring issue. This team went through an arduous Winter of training, psych evaluations and being pushed beyond their limits. That never happened under Tressel. Yet when they return to the field, they look very much like the team we had seen a year ago. The one that Fickell coached.
Now to me regardless of whose recruits these were, there's no excuse for them--esp on defense to not have shown any marked improvement. No one on this defensive unit has stepped it up a couple of notches as expected. Roby and Howard are good corners--and they were good last year as well. But no improvement with the safeties, none in the LB'er corps and Simon and Hankins are still the workhorses that they were last year as well. Nathan Williams and Jordan Hall can't stay healthy for nothing. And then on top of that, we still don't have a premier pass rusher off the edge.
Those remain glowing issues. So for me it isn't about this year as much as it is about the future--and when I say future, I mean the near future as in the next two years. But seeing the scholarship reductions, the fact that we'll lose a corps of our best players after this season and the lack of ability to show vast signs of improvement from one year to the next, has me concerned.

Good post Jimmy. Barnett is just starting to shake off the rust from injury. He made a great bone jarring hit to separate ball from Purdue reciever in clutch time on Saturday. This is a sign of things to come for him over the last 4 games. As the freshmen get more experience - namely Spence - I think we will see more of him down the stretch and I believe he is due to make some big plays for us. Sabino should be back after the bye week which is going to shore up the linebacker corp.
Carlos Hyde has had a phenomenal season. He plays extremely hard, whether he's running the ball or blocking, or even recieving once in awhile. We haven't seen a back get this many yards after contact is some time. I don't think Buckeye nation appreciates what he is doing now that he is finally getting some blocking.
Rod Smith is really coming on and looked great returning kick offs on Saturday .If Devin Smith can improve consistency, he's right there with the BIG's top recievers.
The only thing we are going to disagree on is that you see a loss coming. I don't, at least not on Saturday. Take Buckeyes plus 2 1/2 on Saturday!

It's very difficult to run the table statistically. Even if we had a 90% chance of winning all 8 games so far (and we certainly didn't have a 90% chance against Nebraska and Michigan State), our chances of going 8-0 are only 43%. So, hopefully, we can appreciate what this team has done so far.

Hey Sugar, This is a great example of seeing the glass half-empty rather than half-full. Perhaps your expectations were just a bit too high following the "arduous winter of training."
On offense I see tremendous improvement from Brax and Carlos Hyde, running tougher and with more patience than ever before. We now have a good, hard-running back-up in Smith who has also become a solid North/South kickoff return man. Mewhort has been excellent but the big surprise on the O-line for me has been Fragel, the converted tight end who is getting after it on the O-line. Linsley is in his first year as a starter as is Hall. Philly Brown has improved tremendously IMO and Devin Smith could be the next great wide receiver once he learns to concentrate on all throws his way.
On the D side Sabino had shown improvement before he went down and Shazier is taking better angles and wrapping better than earlier in the year when he was just an unguided missile. Goebel is having a good quiet year on the D-line which is not unusual for an interior lineman while Big Hank is having a great year! WE are now giving three true freshman regular rotations on the D-line and I am confident they will continue to improve and contribute. As far as the last game goes, Bryant and Barnett both tackled better and defended passes. Roby is better than just "solid," and if Howard could learn to wrap up on tackles, he'd be excellent too. Bennett is just coming back from injury.
Of course, as you point out, there is a down side. Johnny Simon has not been the factor I thought he would be. I assume he's playing over an injury as no one give more effort than he does. OJ is OJ and since we're so limited at 'backer, he's seeing more time on the field than ever. Klein has not improved. Hale has not improved. Williams, as you also point out, can't get over the injury bug.
We're 8-0 and lucky to be there but I'm no where near as pessimistic as you for our long term success. But I also don't expect us to win all the rest of our football games this year.
Some famous Zen poet once said, "All value exists in contrast." If you're expectations were really high for this season, you are probably disappointed and see only the flaws. If you're expectations were guarded, as mine were, you can see the light and the end of the tunnel and it looks pretty bright!
Go Bucks!

Excellent. Agree with everything you say. Talent wise this team is way more than average. The potential is there for great things. I want to add that I have noticed Noah Spence putting pressure on the QB routinely. Expect him to be a great addition next season. Nothing but good things coming down the road. I have seen vast improvments on many players. Credit is given to UM and staff. They have done a great job. That was a masterful coaching job with 40 seconds on the clock and no time-outs. The run call for 1st down was gutsy. These players showed they have matured and believe in themselves. With all the shortfalls on defense, missing tackles, bad angles, etc.--I never see quit in the team, Like past years people are not standing around.
