  • Agreed, it's good to see Urban hyping The Rivalry. I like that. Awesome. That's exactly what Hoke did with his infamous countdown clocks. Many posters on this board made comments about those simple clocks being so ridiculous, said Hoke was a joke, that he was overdoing it, got all bent out of shape, fat slob who does he think he is we're gonna kick his scUM ass, blah, blah, blah. Simple clocks, yet so much reaction. And now here we are, a year later, and suddenly Urban is... posting a sign which lists the fields of study of the two teams? That's his attempt at hyping the rivalry? Academics versus University of Michigan? Umm... okay. JMHO, I think Hoke's countdown clocks win this battle. I think any objective person would agree: Hoke 1, Urban O. Not to mention the sign is patently false according to research (link below to backup that statement):

Sorry guys, I've been trying not to be a such a douche this year, and I truly don't mean to flame, but c'mon, ya' gotta admit, seriously --- if you saw that sign anywhere else but in the WHAC, you'd all be like, "OMG, weakest attempt at claiming superiority over another team EVAHR!!!!"

I do hope Urban tries again, something else to hype The Rivalry. I think it's great to have the two coaches going at it like this.

How about kicking Michigan's ass for 8 or 9 times in 10 year like Tressel?

    Sound good?

He isnt using this as hyping the rivalry at all in my opinion. It is just a sign bro relax. Also it wasnt comparing TSUN vs OSU academics overall, it was stating the majors of some of the football players. Go Bucks!

You weasels are constantly missing the point about academics. This is not about which SCHOOL is the better institution, but rather that your football program does live up to the same lofty goals of the university, even though you love to think there's a connection between them. I'm sure you've read Harbaugh's damning words of his alma mater. And even though many of you were ready to hang him in effigy over it, you couldn't contest his point; that the football program operates at a different academic level than the school itself, and that all involved should be ashamed of such a practice, as this is not SOP at Stanford. So get off your high horse on this matter.

Besides, any school that produces a dumbass like Desmond Howard should forevermore be apologizing to the rest of the conference.

Considering OSU was ridiculed for playing a player with a 0.0 gpa and had another who needed failing grades retroactively changed to A's, golf and AIDS awareness classes (which for the one term only gave all participants A's instead of grading on a curve) just to keep him academically eligible, I find the sign rather pathetic. Meyer needs to up his game if he's going to hype the rivalry.

I think we had a countdown clock long before Hoke had one up. JT had one from the moment he stepped on campus so the clock thing is unoriginal and I don't think either win this battle.

Also, about your article. It is from a UM blog, it's not going to be unbiased and of course it's going to pick apart the sign. On a consistent basis, I would have to say that most major programs have most of the players pretty much taking nothing courses. Like that does point out, many of the Engineering majors and such OSU has on the sign are walk ons and don't even play. I have seen articles pointing out a couple players for Michigan who played and had respectable majors and completed them with a high GPA. You can look at OSU teams of the recent past and find similar results. Look no further than Molecular Genetics major and National Championship winning QB Craig Krenzel to find that. A little more recent I remember Antonio Smith ( think his name was Antonio) was an ME major and was a starting corner for at least 2 years. So it really goes both ways and you could find examples like that all over the country.

While I don't disagree with you I don't think the sign was necessarily to hype the rivalry. I don't even think it's an attempt to show academic superiority between schools. We all know, UM is a top flight school and academics rank higher than those of OSU. What he is showing, is that although that is true, the football players are there to play football. It's not for the academics and touting such for recruiting is a joke. Look back at their former QB and current coach of the San Fransisco 49ers to confirm that he will tell you all you need to know on the subject.

Exactly. Nobody who plays big boy football, even Stanford, recruits Einsteins to play football.

Agreed, 100%. I think the players on BOTH teams are, for the most part, not exactly the brightest human beings on the earth, with the exception of a few kids on each team. I don't presume to know, much less claim, that UM's players are any smarter or academically-minded than OSU's players. I think there's a lot of over-sensitivity to that issue on this board. My point was simply that if you're gonna hype The Rivalry, you gotta pick something better than to compare majors. Comparing majors isn't an apples-to-apples comparison across schools because a communications major at one college could be tougher than a biology major at another college. Moreover, why would football players care what the other team is majoring in, how would that hype them up, neither team's players are going to college for the academics anyway so they simply wouldn't care about this sign. And the icing on the cake was the obsurdity of raising the general topic of academics/majors against a rival who is widely known to have better academics as an overall institution (players aside), it just seems like the last thing you'd want to attack... hell I'd be embarassed if Michigan had a sign comparing majors against the players of Harvard's team, that just looks pathetic and insecure and doesn't prove anything.

    native tsun

  • The seed for this was probably planted by the Jim Harbaugh interview where he suggested he was strongly encouraged not to pursue his desired major a U of M (history, I believe), and that apparently disappointed him. I can understand why. Harbaugh seemed to insinuate the coaching staff or some other group affiliated with the football program wanted him to go for a different major to presumably give him more "free" time to spend on other things (like football) or to help him remain eligible.

I've seen a lot of hype about this sign and also seen suggestions that this was photoshopped. Does anyone actually know for sure if this is real?

As for comparing the academics at OSU with those of U of M, you're comparing apples and oranges there. The universities have entirely different missions. OSU is a land grant school with the goal of offering excellent, affordable education to as many people as possible. U of M has very strict admissions requirements and caters to an entirely different set of students (and their parents). I believe the median family income of U of M students is well above $100,000. Fans of both institutions could debate which model is "better" 'til the cows come home and probably still would never reach agreement.

Finally, if this sign is real, it is only comparing majors of football players and begs the question to parents of recruits: what does one do with a General Studies major?

I think UM fans used to feel this way, definitely, but not any longer. That sentiment was 10-20 yrs ago. Too much has happened since then, too much has been written on the subject... Harbaugh and that column written by the AA News a few yrs ago... these were the icing on the cake, everyone already knew UM's players were the same drooling idiots that most college football players are, but those recent events kinda blew away any lingering notions that UM is on the level of Northwestern's or Stanford's player requirements.

I have to disagree with the article you quote. I went back and did some research regarding this. Back before Rich Rod was hired, Harbough had made a comment about scUM admitting guys that were borderline. He "called out Michigan for admitting "borderline guys" and for steering athletes toward softer majors than the general student population." Also, "Yet a university spokesman said this week that less than 1 percent of the undergraduate student body is in the general studies degree program. The spokesman said there are fewer than 200 general studies students out of an undergrad population of nearly 25,000."
This board states 53% of those on the team that have declared majors are in general studies. Mgoblog spends a great deal of time and effort to refute the OSU side of the board but does very little to debunk the scUM side. Leaves us to believe much of that is true.
