On the Ohio State receivers: “Probably the most unprepared group I've ever dealt with.”
"...ever dealt with..." That's a pretty incriminating indictment.
And now they're being coached by our least experienced assistant, a guy who's 27 and been a full-time position coach for only two years at two non-BCS schools.
I can only hope and pray Zach Smith is up to the challenge. Based on Urban's remark, we can ill afford a guy who's learning on the job.

Iowa, are you referring to Stan Drayton?
Yep, definitely harsh and revealing words. Something to keep an eye on as its going to be damn interesting to see what's going on.
I think there's some talent there. It just needs to be developed effectively.

Zach Smith is our current WR coach. Drayton was the WR coach last year and should be held somewhat accountable for their lack of preparedness and underwhelming performance but his coaching background's always been at RB, so it's no surprise Urban moved him back there when he was hired. Not having Posey and Pryor didn't help with an inexperienced unit but I don't want to make excuses. But it's also why Urban moved Vrabel from LB to DL and Fickell went back coaching to LB. It's also why I didn't care for Sheridan, whose background was coaching LBs, as our CB coach and applauded Coombs, who coached DBs at UC. At this level, I personally prefer coaches who've proven to be successful in their particular areas of expertise.
Looking forward, my concern is our worst prepared unit is being coached by our least experienced assistant. The blind leading the blind is rarely a great combination.

Okay thanks! Dude you've got a ton of valid points here. +1
Yep, it does give one cause for concern. Nevertheless, Coach Meyer knows what he's doing, so I have to believe he's seeing this as you've described. He won't allow this group nor the coach to flounder.
As this unit will be and should be a huge part of the offense, performance is a must. Heads are gonna roll for Mr. Zack should they not be up to snuff by opening day. He best get his shat and these kids together or I suspect he won't be at tOSU for long.

On Chris “Big Hungry” Carter, a 358-pound redshirt freshman who moved from the offensive line to defensive tackle midway through the spring: “He wasn’t really producing on offense, and he wanted a shot. He did pretty good. Our whole thing with him is conditioning and he’s doing that as we speak. He’s in the conditioning mode. If he can learn to get himself in shape, he’ll play here. If not, no chance.”

I have to agree the Gullah and Hooked on Ebonics writing from soflabuck is about as asinine and idiotic as Jim Bollman's playcalling. Don't bother posting me, soflabuck, I've ignored your "Simple Jack" and " I am Sam" Dumbass!
SoflaBuck, Never go full retard! What do I mean? Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded. Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. You go full retard with your posts, SoFLABUCK. Never go full retard. You don't buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." and Sarah Palin Remember? They went full retard, went home empty handed...

Complete about face at the head coaching position here in just over a year. A complete turnaround. You couldn't find two coaches who could be any more different in terms of their methods of recruiting and how they conduct interviews.
But on a side note, I have long been one of the few here who has continuously emphasized this team's lothargy, lack of leadership, passion and toughness. Few of you here could see it. Either that or you refused to ackowledge the obvious. Tressel believed that you become a team leader based upon seniority which is a highly fallacious concept at best.
In all honesty the last team leaders we've had on offense were Troy Smith and Kirk Barton. Beanie Wells showed a flash of it in the Oct '08 game at Wisconsin where he challenged Pryor on the scoring drive to become a man.
Leadership has never been lacking on the defensive side of the ball--some seasons stronger than others but nonetheless there's always been a presence of it here.
But trust that if Tressel were still here he'd have us all believing that this team is chock full of leadership when we can clearly see that it isn't. It's why some of us referred to the majority here as "Tresselytes" or "Blind Homers." Seeing what you want to see or hope to but not seeing the true reality of things. Meyer's just simply stating the obvious.
Meyer has said since coming here six months ago that he emulates old-school coaches as opposed to his contemporaries. And it shows. Most of today's coaches are either all about having fun (Pete Carroll), micromanaging (Tressel), talking a good game and bloviating (Bryan Kelley) or pulling tricks and gimmicks out of their ball caps (Les Miles). Meyer however chooses to study the Woody Hayes', Earle Bruce's, Lou Holtz's and Steve Spurriers of the coaching world.

One caveat is that it appears Meyer is using the media to motivate the players. I see this as playing with fire in some ways. For example, what if one of his players decides to bite back through the media after a tough loss. All I'm saying is that there are probably going to be situations throughout any season where media needs to be kept at arms length.
