We need to stop talking about Tressel and move on. Great coach, one of the ebst OSU has ever had. But we need to move on.

  • I knew that a new DC was likely, if not inevitable. I like Stoops, in theory, but it's a shame we have to lose the guy who I feel is the most qualified in Heacock. His defenses have been consistently good, if not great. Even this year's disappointing D was still statistically pretty good (though they let us down in the clutch a few times). Oh well.

I agree, Tressel's perspective on people is a respected opinion I believe he's a good judge of character. His thoughts on individuals on staff or others is a valid point. These threads are for discussion all things are open.

Whoa there fella..no need to troll. I was just saying that this is a new era and I know Buckeye fans tend to not let go of the past. Tressel was a great coach, I said that.

And exactly what Tressel would want as well.

Exactly. I'm not saying forget about Tressel, we don't forget about Woody. I'm just saying move on, and begin a new with Meyer

Heacock took over for Snyder his first year was not good in 2004 that is when Fickel became co Heacock does not like to blitz loves soft zone, too conservative!

well some of your recollections here are not quite accurate, here is the actual history

2004 DC - Mark Snyder - Fickell had moved from Special Teams to take over the LBs and Heacock was still just the DL coach

in 2005 Heacock and Fickell became co-DC's when Snyder moved to be the HC at Marshall.

the "weak" defense you speak of in 2004 was led by Mark Snyder, not Heacock.

well didn't you hear? Meyer is trying to assemble the suckiest coaching staff in the country!

How many points does the other team get for an epic blow up by an opposing team's coach?

But it sure lights a fire under the defense. And as far as I am concerned, defense is played with much more emotion than offense. The offense has to be controlled rage, defense just rage! lynchmob

    Great point.

This defense, from '05-'10 consistently ranked from around the top 3-10. However, they did so without any real punch on a consistent basis.

And a lot of that I attribute to the fact that they had a mild-mannered D coordinator in Heacock. Recall right before the half against USC in '08 where he huddled with them just off from the sidelines and told them to settle down so that they may be able to execute better. The problem was that outside of Jenkins, they were all too serene and settle that game. Marcus Freeman was the worst. He got burned time and time again along with Anderson Russell and to make matters worse, the LB'er cost the team a penalty for a wimpy push on Sanchez. He should've sought to end his career for the way he had humiliated him throughout.

The last thing I want in a defense are players who're too cerebral and cautious. That's not to say that those aren't good traits to have. It's a fine balance. You can make wise decisions but also seek to take an opposing offense's key player out of commission. Your objective as a defender is to get on and off the field. To do whatever you have to do to keep from getting worn out down the stretch. That's what any D-coordinator worth a damn will tell you. It's the motto all great defenders live by, however because of the fine and penalty heavy rules these days, they dare not say such publicly.

Any great D-coordinator will stress to his defense the art of ball stripping--forcing turnovers at every turn. Because again the objective is to get on and off the field ASAP. So I hope whoever the next D-coordinator is will instill this mindset into the defense. And furthermore let's hope we'll get a secondary coach in here who'll teach our corners to keep one eye on the receiver and one watching for the ball rather than facing the receiver with both eyes.
