Mr. B Gets Legal, Makes Point Or 2

woody and the punch are mentioned rarely. For every woody mention, the punch is discussed less than 10% of the time.

As time moves on, Fraud Tressel will be referred to less as a fraud, but that takes time.

And no doubt you will be sure to be part of that 10%....100% of the time. Good to see your back and I knew I'd lure you out with the 'fraud' additive. Now, if you would please sir, give the board, Mr B and the rest more gas for their fires!

  • JT appointing himself head of compliance was his downfall. He didn't quite get to the bottom of it with his "investigation" did he ?. Turn it over to compliance like you are supposed to and none of this happens, none of this. Great guy, great coach, blah blah blah. Major screw up appointing himself head of compliance. Had Coach control freak let the compliance people investigate, 5 clowns get suspended a few meaningless games at the beginning of 2010 and it is forgotten by seasons end. Amazing more of you aren't outraged by the damage his actions are causing.

  • very true. it was more the media vultures than anything.

speaking of the Pukitzer and judging, remember this: the Acadeny Awards picked "How Green Was My Valley" (?) over "Citizen Kane", "My Fair Lady" over "Dr. Strangelove" and many other sad choices.

Mr. B, the stuff on Tressel is your best yet. And, if the facts stated are accurate (which based on what we know about JT is highly likely), he never "lied" to OSU or the NCAA. I'm tired of hearing the sports equivalent (i.e. the monotonous and unintelligent mantra of the press before all of the facts were in on JT) of the lie that "Bush lied, and people died." As to the BOT, Gee and Smith, their actions are sadly symptomatic of a society which lacks true leaders. Leadership requires a strong moral compass, and few today have it--these sorry excuses for leaders have grown up in a society where "the medium is the message," and which mistakes such a shallow approach to truth as sophistication and savoir faire. Once the media feeding frenzy began, Tress never had a chance--the BOT, Gee and Smith ceded moral leadership to the idol of "image," and its priests, the press.

I can't recall if this is the second or third post that says that JT didn't lie. What are you people confused about? He signed a document stating that he knew of nothing that would make any of his players ineligible. He did know about things that would make players ineligible. Therefore, he lied. Where is the confusion?

  • There is no justice anymore. Jim Tressel was crucified without due process.
Murderer Casey Anthony had due process and was set free. I'm losing fath in America....

  • Why pay attention to Weston? He told me everything I need To know about him with the Fox mention. If he thinks that Fox is biased, he's had either too much Kool-Aid or he's an idiot. Either way, who cares what he thinks? Can you really have an exchange of ideas with a moron?

  • Mr. B, Wake up. You are not the only Buckeye fan who loved Tressel and thinks he was basically a great guy and coach but you have blinders on. Who cares if Pryor and Posey lied. Didn't Tressel say he didn't tell anyone ( he did in fact but not the people he should have) because he was afraid for them? You are distorting the facts to protect your image you have of him on a pedestal. He screwed up big time and continued to lie until he was forced to reveal the truth. Don't twist the facts.

At least Mr. B is still reasonable about JT.

me too man, I do not feel at all that he should have been fired over this, and I wish the man all the luck in the world because he is a good man.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understood him to have signed a statement that he knew of no potential violations. If he confronted the players with the substance of the e-mail (alleging that they had sold memorabilia), and they denied it, he certainly had the right to rely on their denials (assuming he had no other information that undercut the players' credibility) in signing the document. Whom would you believe with all other things being equal, guys that you work with every day or the hearsay statement of a low-life convicted felon who was under investigation by the FBI? If he took the players' word, he had no knowledge of potential violations at the time he signed the document. Hardly a lie at all.

The representation made implicitly requires the coach to exercise judgment on what constitutes a potential violation, or otherwise the coach would be compelled to report every rumor or incredible piece of information that came into his possession. I am confident that the language would not require such an absurd result.

Now let me ask you a question--why are you so willing to accept the judgment of some sanctimonious, self-interested and ill-willed members of the media and be so quick to call JT a liar without at least hearing what he or his lawyer would say about his intentions and understanding when he signed the document?

  • We have yet to hear directly from Tressel without him being muzzled by someone. There is much we do not know about what really happened but hopefully after August 12th we will get it. But if Tressel is true to character he will not speak ill of anyone. I wish there was a way for him to speak freely and openly. He still loves OSU and will not say anything to hurt the school and the players/ students. But the media and blogger keep going on and on and on.... Get ready becuase after the NCAA rules the internet and satellites floating around the globe are going to explode with unhappiness no matter what ever the conclusion may be.

While I believe Tressel should have been dismissed for his cover-ups, I find the actions of the school, BOT and athletic department to be far worse. The result is OSU losing far more dignity and respect than Tressel has. I can't believe OSU had the nerve to say Tressel was an embarrassment to the school in their NCAA response just four months after they gave him unconditional support in the 3/8 press conference. A few months earlier Smith claimed that our investigation determined that we do not have a systemic problem and this is an isolated incident. One member of the BOT attributes the problems to a crack in our value system while others claim they're a result of compliance issues. I could keep going.

While it first appeared the shame would be focused on Tressel, it's OSU that has become an infamous institution.

I agree with this sentiment on some level.

I believe Tressel's failure to come forward with the information after the Feds got a hold of OSU in December, (and hence his 3 reasons for not disclosing earlier were lifted "confidentiality, player safety, hindering the fed investigation are all moot once the feds contacted OSU"), along with his misleading answer given when asked directly by OSU during the investigation in December, and the fact we now know that Tressel contacted Cicero on Christmas Eve to clarify that these allegations in December were the same ones he was warned about in April which Cicero confirmed and hence he knew what he had in his possession and still didn't disclose it, all make this a fireable offense.

What made it worse was that Gee and Smith tried like crazy to minimize this and have made the PR aspect of this a circus. Everything from going for an initial 2 game suspension and "at the end of the day" and "I hope he doesn't fire me" comments to asking for his resignation within just 2 months has turned OSU into a punching bag and a national joke.

Tressel got what he deserved,,(try lying and hiding malfeasance of your employees from your boss and their governing body and see if you keep your job)

But the way Gee and Smith have handled this from a PR perspective has been just as bad and should cost them both their jobs as well.

Think about the behavior and performance of these 3 folks and ask yourself, are you getting $6.3 million dollars worth of performance?? to my mind this could have been handled better by a HS pricipal and a Middle school football coach better than how these 3 chose to handle this.

Had Gee and Smith stepped up in January and asked for Tressel's resignation then, this would have been so much cleaner.

Don't forget, that the ncaa in most cases of 10.1 violations hands out "Show Cause" orders on the coach involved, which effectively fired them anyway..I fully expect Tressel will still get a multi year show cause order, even though he has been let go/retired.

  • I'm in on the class action suit. The Media is not the judge, jury, and the lynching crew. There is a reason that a non bias organization (theoretically) is supposed to investigate before pronouncing a verdict.
