NCAA tells OSU to expect bad news
    BY MATT MARKEY
    BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS -- The NCAA has upped the ante in its lengthy investigation of rules violations at Ohio State, informing the university that it will now face the serious charge of "failing to monitor" its troubled football program.

As recently as July, the NCAA had indicated Ohio State would not be charged with failure to monitor or the most grave accusation of "lack of institutional control". At that time, the NCAA probe had centered on the tattoo and memorabilia scandal that ultimately led to the firing of head coach Jim Tressel in late May and lengthy suspensions this season for several top players.

Ohio State officials confirmed Thursday, however, that because of additional violations that have surfaced -- including players taking cash for showing up at a charity event and players receiving pay in excess of the amount they were due while working for a prominent Ohio State booster -- the dynamic of the case has changed.

In the wake of the tattoo scandal, Ohio State vacated its entire 2010 season, including Big Ten and Sugar Bowl championships. The school also later formally disassociated itself with the booster involved in pay scandal.

Adding to its list of self-imposed penalties, OSU announced Thursday it will take a reduction of five football scholarships over a three-year period, with the reductions to start next year

The Buckeyes are still awaiting a ruling from the NCAA Committee on Infractions that will outline what additional penalties will be imposed on the program. OSU officials are scheduled to meet with the infractions committee again on Dec. 10 to address the most-recent charges, but Ohio State has requested the matter be addressed in a conference call the week of Nov. 28.

"We look forward to working with the staff and the Committee on Infractions to reach a timely resolution of the case," OSU athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. "On a personal note, I deeply regret that I did not ensure the degree of monitoring our institution deserves and demands."

Ohio State plays its final game of the regular season on Nov. 26 at Michigan. If the Buckeyes receive a bowl ban as part of the penalties issued by the NCAA Infractions Committee, Ohio State will be ineligible to play in the Big Ten's inaugural championship game on Dec. 3.

  • Ralph you and TZ seem to delight in anything negative for Ohio State. Are you guys butt buddies? Seriously? You're both like hemorrhoids, you both come from assholes and nobody wants you

  • And the beat goes on.

Though often asked, God does not take sides in politics or college football.

  • The conference call on the 27th is OSU's way of expediting the process and getting the verdict sooner, thus paving the way for Urban.

Ralph, get ready to be owned by The Ohio State University for another 10 years.

  • Really? The NCAA told OSU to expect bad news. Way to editorialize that article. Keep dreaming and be prepared for an all out a$$ kicking when the Bucks visit the "Big Outhouse" the Saturday after Thanksgiving!

  • It is really funny that all of the Michigan fans worry about Ohio State 24/7......We don't really pay attention to Michigan except when we beat them every year....

    jwallace

  • wheres the quote from a member of the NCAA telling OSU to expect bad news?? I saw a quote from lawyer working on the case and familiar with the charges that said to expect an additional year of probation. I guess I would be pissed at life too if my name was Ralphie and I was a scUM fan.

I have never once visited a scUM board and never will. I don't care about them. I lived in the state for a year and a half. It is a shithole.

  • Why won't the link work for me?

  • A post season ban will be added.
OSU gave the NCAA the info. Smith knows that the scholarship
reduction has already been cleared by the NCAA.
But, they want the entire staff gone form the Tressel clan.
Except for Drayton, who will usher in Urban Meyer.

I assume you have documentation to confirm since you seem to be making a statement vs. an assumption???

  • Ralph: I guess at some point NCAA punishment will be severe enough that Michigan can beat Ohio State.

For now though if I were Woeverine fan I would conclude that the NCAA is not to that point yet.

    BuckeyeMark

  • I must have read right over the part that said, "Hey OSU, this is the NCAA...expect some bad news". Did anyone else get that out of that article or just the goblow guy?

WRONG !!!! It starts with the selfish players who put JT in a no win situation.

Bottom line....... these players keep their noses clean, we don't have to worry about the NCAA.

Also, can someone please get the blueboy off of the BUCKEYES board ? He certainly wont be around when scUM gets another ass whoopin' this year, that would make 9 out of 10 right ?

With all the players leaving, is scUM even going to have enough players left to play in THE GAME ?

This sounds like the JoePa defenders...

A no win situation? Tell the truth, players sit out a few games....move on.
