  • The two (Big Ten and Notre Dame) have been in discussions the last week or so but no official word announced yet that I know of. If this comes to pass, does ND join the Leaders or the Legends division? We'll just have to wait and see. Would make the balance of power in the BIG interesting.

If it happened, the Big Ten would likely add another team to ensure even divisions and a secure title game. Wonder who the other team would be...

This has been going on longer than any of us have been alive..... Its time to just stop this ND joining the Bigs fantasy. I posted links to newspaper articles from the 20's and 30's talking about this same thing. Funny how it never goes away.

  • Do we really even want ND? I mean, if they come as an equal partner, fine, but they usually whine about wanting special preferences. I would rather pass if that is the case.

Absolutely -- if they come in acting like Texas does in the Big 12, that's a big fat no. Especially when ND hasn't been relevant in decades.

The domain name is putting a big sign in front of your face that says "Sports" & "Tales".

I'm not sure how much more obvious it can be.

Actually, because there's only one T, I read it as "Sport" & "Ales," as in Sports and Beer, which is what both of them go best together with.

ND needs to get with it. They see what's happening on the college football landscape and yet by stubbornly insisting on remaining the lone independent BCS holdover as some sort of cockeyed tribute to Knute and Ara & Co., they are fast becoming irrelevant. Their halo's lost its luster and the bright circle of light the school's sports program once cast is quickly shrinking. Touchdown Jesus is thinking about joining Dane Crist and transferring--word has it He's praying on it.

They either need to band with the B1G as the only bastion of northern football (not just Midwest) or figure out how to move their brand South, and since the SEC is full, that means the ACC or the Big 12. I don't see them giving up their independence to join forces with Texas. And while the ACC has some "pedigree" schools that ND's played football against over the years (FSU, BC, Pitt), not to mention their Big Least basketball rivalries with Pitt, Syracuse, and BC, do they really want to be in the same league as Miami? That's an awful lot of travel for a Midwest school versus games that are much closer. And not just football and basketball but baseball, softball, track & field, volleyball, swimming, golf--all the non-revenue producing sports that cost money to field teams.

So from my perspective, once they do wake up, they'll either join the B1G or the ACC.

    iowabuckeyes

  • I agree. I actually think it is more likely they go to the ACC...they are more likely to get a preferential deal there, and they would be considered the elite school in that conference, at least prestige-wise. With the Big 10, they are at best third...and they know OSU and UM will not give them any kind of deal to come.

  • Notre Dame is a good school, but I am not very interested in them joining the Big Ten. Like others have said, they seem to want special treatment. The Big Ten is founded on equal members, and that is one of our strengths. I say Pass.

If it's all about sports and especially football, you're probably right. But I can't see ND seeing itself on the same level academically as some of the ACC schools, while the B1G would be.

  • If this is true there would be 7 in one division and 6 in the other. What school would be the best fit to provide balance (7 - 7)? A MAC school, Iowa State? WVU? Pitt?

ACC is a more likely destination. ND would be a big frog in a small pond, and it would improve their recruiting in the east and southeast.

    laservet

  • Do you think this 4 team playoff has ND thinking to join a conference? If and If they do join B1G, then we add Rutgers. There is nothing else. WVU is in B12, Pitt and Cuse left for ACC. We don;t want Cincy. So that leaves a MAC school or Bigeast team. The only Bigeast team would be Rutgers.
