Noah Spielman: Automatic 2014 legacy offer?

  • Don't know much about him or if he is a Big 10 caliber player, but if there was ever a marginal talent legacy (purely hypothetical assumption-again I don't know anything about his talent level) who deserved a scholly, it would be Noah. Son of arguably the most popular Buckeye of the modern era (Archie Griffin is the only other to enter into the conversation IMHO) I'd love to see him on the roster. Not to mention if heart and leadership ability are a genetic trait, he is a shoe in considering who his father is and his mother was.

  • We should have offered at birth!

    Exhibit A - Chris Spielman

I'm sure there are a whole hell of alot of PAC 10 schools wishing they would have offered Clay Matthews Jr.

Noah's small for DL--6-1, 230, probably not fast enough for LB. I watched UA play Springfield last September on ESPN in the Shoe. Frankie E had his hand bandaged and Noah didn't do much. I think Chris may have called the game.

If he doesn't want to play D-III (Mount Union, Ohio Northern), I'd love to see him walk on at OSU. If he's got even half of the fire and competitiveness of his old man and a sliver of the guts and courage his mom had, he could be the second coming of Zach Boren--a road paving FB in an offense where we could find ourselves lacking at that position whenever we line up in the power I.

BTW, how cool is it that the UA Golden Bears' HC is named Mike Golden?

Maybe I'm just waxing nostalgic today, but the idea of Chris Spielman's kid playing football at any school OTHER than tOSU just seem sacrilegious.

  • Guess it comes down to options, ability, & desire to be a Buckeye. If that's what he wants he will be one scollie or walk on. If ya gotta have it!

He is going into his jr year which means he is most likely 16 years old. He has plenty of time to add size and speed. Another 30 -40 lbs over two years should be no problem and you know he is going to hit the weights.

Almost anyone can add weight. It's his height that will make him or break him. And as he adds weight, will it slow him down? Simon is 6-2 so it's possible but Simon was already tearing it up and making a name for himself in his sophomore year. I haven't heard any buzz about Noah.

But you're right--he's young. Still, his old man played LB and FB at Massilion and if he doesn't get much bigger, why not FB?

  • I doubt his Dad will allow him to take a scholarship from someone else who is more deserving. Bringing in a legacy is fine but it will cause hostility within the ranks if he gets preferential treatment. Give him a chance to prove himself, then fine. Plus, I bet the kid will play where he gets a chance to play.

This is the link to his highlight film from last year. It is a pretty short film and only shows a few plays but as has already been said, he will only be a Junior so there is definitely some promise here.

  • His film reminds me of another undersized D-Lineman for the Bucks, 1992 All-Big Ten Nose Tackle Greg Smith.

he can definitely get heavier and stronger. As far as height and speed, that is mostly genetic. My son was a D-lineman for an Ohio division 1 high school team. He spent a lot of money and about 6 years trying to get faster. He lowered his forty time some but not nearly enough. I finally got one of his off-season trainers who played professional baseball to admit what I've always known. You can improve your speed some but it's mostly in the genes. You either have it or you don't. Chris was not a speed type player so I doubt that his son is very fast. His best chance is to get incredibly strong and be a run stopping D-tackle but even there at 6 feet tall it will be tough. My best wishes go out to him.

  • Way to early to discount a Spielman. My guess is that by this time next year he is 6'2" or 6'3", 280 lbs of bad arsssssss! Knew his Dad from Massillon and I have a feeling his son will be a beast for us in a few years (similar to DL Bennett in a few years).
