OSU D-Line

  • The Ohio State Buckeyes defensive line has the potential to be one of the most dominating defensive lines ever. With Big Hank, Simon, Bennett, Miller, Williams, Washington, Schutt, and possible Spence and Pittman. We have elite pass rushers and run stoppers. There are so many possibilities with this D-line. Any thoughts?

No worries, Bri's 1st post- he stated that he like to wear women's underwear. We just all accepted it.

  • What about DT Chase Farris and DE Kenny Hayes? They were both Top 15 recruits at their respective positions. And Garrett Goebel, who started at DT, Adam Bellamy, who got major reps at DE, and Darryl Baldwin? J.T. Moore may find himself setting a modern speed record going from starting DE to student manager.

Good thought 513. It will be really interesting to see who sees the field next year. I would imagine that we may rotate D-lines in to keep the dogs fresh, and keep them hungry for qb blood. Both the talent and the coaching should be fun to watch. Nice first post.

  • Moore could maybe lose about 15 lbs and could be a MLB he is a tough kid a player. He is just undersize to play DE with his speed

Great post...should be an embarrassment of riches and you forgot Bellamy and Hale. Bellamy was doing very well this year and the speed on this line should be SEC like.

  • I talked to Kenny Hayes (from my old highschool) the other day, he said he has put on about 15-lbs of muscle and is getting quicker...same for Steve Miller. Look out...these two may compete for starting jobs. Both are over 6'4 and around 250-260. Nate Williams returning, possibly Simon returning. Big Hank solid again this season. Bellamy and Goebel both played well in situations this year. Bennett, Farris, Moore all getting reps inside and outside throughout the year...and throw in the spot duty that Hale got and played good...then add in the class we have coming in with Pittman and Schutt. Plus other recruits looking at us.

Wow...the thought of rotating guys that could start on a majority of the colleges in the country, in and out all game.

  • Baldwin also got some PT this year and looked pretty good. I know many have talked about him moving to OL, but he performed pretty well when he was on the field this year. Its going to be crazy watching these kids compete for PT this year

  • The only thing we seem to be missing are some more linebackers along with Shazier and Grant. Even Grant is unproven at this point. Other than that, yeah, I think our defensive front is going to blow past opposing olinemen.

They are so much more comfortable than tighty whities.

  • If the women were in them!

The DEs are going to be young. That might pose early problems, maybe even into their second years.

  • They need help along the entire line. They were gouged on multiple occasions last year.

It is nice to see these top recruits coming in though. It appears they're going to be formidable soon.

    Now they need linebackers.

At 6-1/252, you're right--he's a 'tweener, a little short to be any every down DE and these 6-4/260 guys like Washington, Pittman, Miller and Hayes better fit Meyer's DE prototype. Still, he could be a nice change of pace--after opposing OTs get accustomed to our taller DEs, here comes the shorter Moore getting underneath them and using his lack of height to his advantage, turn a perceived weakness into a strength. Think of it like a pitcher throwing fastball after fastball and then here comes the change-up. Moore can also be a situational DE, maybe drop back into coverage like an LB when we blitz, so we can use his speed to cover TEs and RBs.

  • I wonder if Meyer moves Sabino to DE this upcoming season on certain plays... it would be interesting to see a 5 - 2 - 4 Defense... with Nate Williams, Sabino, Hankins, Simon and Bennett up front followed by Shazier and Klein as LBs and then Howard, Roby, Clarke, Barnett in the secondary... Just throwing out suggestions... Go Buckeyes! O-H!

  • I think we sit back and wait to see what will happen with Simon and Nate Williams. Curious if Meyer knows that they are going to declare for the NFL? Williams injury, and the ones early in his career could have him thinkin go pro...make the money now while he can.
    Simon? Could leave..who knows.

Meyer has been going hard after ends...I know Simon played alot on the outside...maybe he knows something.

    Hope I am wrong.

I was thinking of the same thing. I think Simon leaves. Not sure on Nate, since he missed a lot of time, so he might need another year to get NFL ready. All these DT recruits help Big Hank. As the season went on Hank (to me know) didn't look like himself. I don't know if he was worn out at the end of the year, or maybe hurt a little bit, but he digressed from the start of the season. Having depth and rotating these guys out, will help dramatically.

  • Fist time i have commented on any bucknuts board, but it has occurred to me reading/listening/watching over the last three weeks that OSU has the opportunity to do something few NCAA teams have EVER been able to do. With Herman we get the Big 12 type offense and with the Pontif, Fickell, and whomever else come in for DC, we will have an SEC style, if not exactly the same, defense. How many teams in NCAA can say they have potential to do this? Herman will use the incredible speed of the SEC type offense against them as he picks through vidoe and finds where that incredible speed will overrun the play, he will absolutely shred B1G defenses with his always moving offense. On the D-side, we will know what works well in the SEC for D-Line and LB's. Can you imagine the practice squad beign tutored to operate as an SEC type defense against Tom Herman. The team will only be better because of it. I AM DRINKING THE KOOL-AID FOLKS!!!!

Can't see them leaving because they won't be 1st round. Williams would be the 1st to leave in my opinion because he may be in position to graduate.
As much as I like these 2 in college I have doubts to the NFL potential. OSU needs both in 2012.
Big Hank was nicked up during the stretch run. Playing him at end seemed non-procuctive since he looks like a DT run stuffer. With Williams back and Simon moving back to SDE this should allow Big Hank to play the inside..
    2012 OSU DL=potential awesome

    centervilleosu

  • I believe Simon stays. The young studs comming in will have the veteran leadership of Nate, Johnny and Big Hank. Put the experience last yeards DL class got as well as the prospects that are comming in.....Hank will stay inside where he belongs and will get double teamed, the rotation that keeps guys fresh will puty fear into opposing teams and overall make the linebackers better, which in turn will help the secondary. 2012's defense has alot of potential and I for one cannot wait.
