OT: Extinct animals you are glad are dead

  • Since I'm stuck at work and it's a really slow day here and on the boards (damn you off-season!), here's a thread to liven things up a bit (if you're interested in this stuff). There are lots of big, nasty animals that are extinct now that would cause us serious problems if they were still around. I can only imagine what things would be like if Megalodon was still around. Imagine a 50-60 foot long shark that could swallow boats whole and was as long as the ships that Columbus sailed on.

Anyone else know of some crazy animal that they wouldn't want to meet today?

For anyone who doesn't know, here's a bit about Megalodon. Some had 7 inch-long teeth!

  • Not sure about the spelling, but the Dilophasaurus. The one on Jurrassic park that spit in the fat dudes face. They actaully got up to 1000 pounds.

This is whyI love the new show Terra Nova!

Really? I watched about half of the pilot and turned it because the special effects were pretty bad in my opinion and while the premise was interesting there were way too many cliches for my liking (stereotypical angry teenager, little kid who doesn't know her dad, etc.)

  • I don't think megalodon's were shallow water sharks.. I doubt they would be that huge of a problem anymore than great whites and bull sharks.. a shark eating a boat is a pretty scary though though.. Imagine fishing for marlin and having one on when you see a megalodon about to snatch it.. better hope that line breaks haha.

Actually they were mostly coastal sharks who hung around the shallower areas eating whales. You can find their teeth all over coastal areas nowadays (I've found a couple myself in North Carolina).

And yeah it would make fishing for just about anything out on the open water scary as hell... the only thing I'd feel safe going out on would be an aircraft carrier!

Hopefully we won't have to hear about Honeybadger anymore and I don't care.

If Killer Whales can slide up on beaches to eat seals, I wouldn't rule anything out. Luckily in Santa Cruz they have huge kelp beds which supposedly keep the sharks out. I think it's been over 25 years since they've had an attack.

If only we had football all year round I wouldn't feel the need to post threads like this to pass the time.

That's interesting, although I'd bet the great whites would have a much tougher time hunting in the kelp where the seals would have an easier time getting away away.

That's what i have heard. It makes sense logically, but I am sure if a shark wants to come up to feed, kelp isn't going to stop him. It makes me feel better about surfing in the red triangle. Google that. It's scary. Stinson Beach just north of SF gets pretty frequent attacks. Scary as shit.

None taken lol. If T-Rexes were till around I would 1) Want one as a pet and 2) Want to put a giant OSU jersey on it and sic it on Michigan fans during a game.

Yeah man you've got huge balls going out there, I know I'd be scared shitless to do it. White sharks (and sharks in general) have always fascinated me and I'd love to see one up close but only from a boat, there's no way I'd get in the water with them.

Well, there are usually tons of people out there. The way I look at it is that at least there are more entrees on the menu than just me! LOL Plus i can paddle fast as hell, so I feel like he will grab someone else! LOL

Haha hopefully, maybe the sharks will develop a taste for Michigan fans one day and everyone else will be totally safe...

Believe it or not I do see a fair amount of Michigan shirts out here. Although, I get a lot of "Go Bucks!" walking around in Silicon Valley and San Francisco. It's cool to see!

Sharks have exquisite taste. There's no way in hell they're going to start eating SCUM fans. They will starve before they put that nasty crap in their mouth.
